Man Cooks Dinner For Nine Friends, But Only Two Show Up And Finally Tell Him The Truth

Friendships are supposed to make people feel valued and included, but sometimes it takes an uncomfortable moment to realize that not everyone in a group feels the same way about each other. Being surrounded by people does not always mean you truly belong.

One Redditor discovered this after attending a dinner hosted by a friend who had gone out of his way to prepare a meal for their entire group. He cooked everything himself and was excited to spend time together, but when the evening arrived, almost nobody showed up.

As he and another friend sat with him, they realized something painful: he had been feeling excluded for a long time, and the others were not treating him like part of the group.

Instead of letting him continue wondering what was happening, they decided to have an honest conversation. What they revealed changed the way everyone viewed the friendship circle. Keep reading to see what happened next.

A man realizes his friend group has been excluding one member, leading to a painful conversation and a decision to walk away

'I told my friend he is not part of our group'

My friend invited everyone over for dinner last night and he was excited.

He made homemade spaghetti and garlic bread and baked chocolate chip cookies for our entire group.

There are nine of us in the group and for whatever reason they never invite him to hang out or do things with our group.

Either I or another person will invite him but most of the time he is on his own.

I was going to his dinner but I was going to be late since I had to pick up my dad from the airport.

He asked everyone to come at 5pm but I was not going to arrive until 6:30-7pm.

I got to his house at 7pm and he opened the door but only one other person was there.

They were sitting at his kitchen counter watching a baseball game and he had all the food on the counter.

I asked him where everyone was and he said they either canceled last minute or had not shown up yet.

We decided to wait another hour for people to arrive but no one came and we ate in near silence.

After we finished he got up and cleared the table and while he was in the kitchen

I leaned over to the other person and said we needed to tell him that the group excludes him from events.

She was hesitant at first because she did not want to hurt his feelings but I countered by saying it was obvious

that the people he considers friends do not feel the same about him and she was convinced.

We walked into the kitchen and asked him to sit down. He sat down and we told him that the other people canceled because they did not want to come.

For reasons unbeknownst to us they never ask him to hang out and he deserves a group of friends who will appreciate him.

My friend told him that there is a separate group chat he is not part of that is considered the actual group chat.

This took me by surprise because I was not aware of this group chat.

She told him he is a good looking guy with a bunch of interests and there is a ton of people out there who would enjoy hanging out with him.

He was silent for a minute then thanked us for telling him.

He has been feeling ostracized from our group and admitted that he planned the dinner to see who would come.

We were the only two who showed up and he appreciated us showing up and giving him a feeling of friendship.

My friend and I said we want to continue being friends with him and he felt the same.

We ended up talking for an hour and he sent us each of us home with a big bowl of spaghetti.

The spaghetti was delicious and I even have enough for tomorrow.

I checked Instagram tonight and he unfollowed everyone in the group but me and my friend. I am considering unfollowing them as well.

The whole exclusion from the group chat thing is on my mind and I wonder what they have said about me.

My friend is safe. We have known each other since our freshman year of college and she has never given me a reason to not trust her.

I hope my friend finds a group of people for him. He is a very nice person and someone is going to want to spend time with him.

Update: I unfollowed all of them this afternoon.

The more I look back the more I realize I am not included in a lot of things either. I’m not wasting my early 20s with people who don’t care...

Few social experiences hurt quite like discovering that the people someone considers friends have quietly decided that person does not belong. There is no dramatic breakup and often no explanation. Instead, the truth emerges through unanswered invitations, plans made elsewhere, and eventually the painful realization that everyone else knew about the exclusion first.

That is what makes this dinner especially difficult. The friend did not casually order pizza; he made spaghetti, garlic bread, and cookies for nine people. More importantly, he later admitted that the evening was partly a test.

He had already sensed that something was wrong and wanted to see who would actually come. Only two people did. Learning about the separate “real” group chat simply gave a name to the rejection he had apparently been feeling for some time.

There is another perspective worth considering, though. Telling him the truth undoubtedly hurt, but continuing to protect him from it might have prolonged something worse. His two friends could have invented excuses for the absent guests and temporarily spared his feelings. Instead, they gave him information that allowed him to make his own decision.

His response—unfollowing the others while maintaining these two friendships—suggests he was not abandoning friendship itself. He was redirecting his energy toward people who demonstrated reciprocity.

Psychologist Kipling Williams, PhD, has spent decades studying ostracism. The American Psychological Association reports that his research found people are remarkably sensitive even to subtle exclusion. Ostracism can threaten four important psychological needs: belonging, self-esteem, control, and a sense of meaningful existence.

Williams also explains that people commonly respond by trying to regain acceptance, withdrawing, or attempting to restore control. More recent research summarized by the APA found that stronger threats to those psychological needs were associated particularly with withdrawal and avoidance after exclusion.

That research makes the dinner look less like an unsuccessful party and more like a painful moment of certainty. Before that night, he could keep wondering whether people were simply busy or whether he was imagining the distance.

Afterward, he knew. Painful certainty can sometimes provide something ambiguity cannot: permission to stop chasing inclusion from people who repeatedly withhold it.

The OP’s later decision to leave the same social circle is revealing too. Discovering how one person was treated made them reconsider their own experiences of being left out. Perhaps the healthiest outcome is not trying to understand every secret conversation in that other group chat.

Three people already discovered something more useful around a bowl of spaghetti: a smaller friendship built on mutual effort may offer considerably more belonging than a larger group where someone constantly has to earn a place.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These Redditors encouraged investing in genuine friends and leaving the disrespectful group behind

[Reddit User] − This was a lovely story and that was a lovely thing you did for your friend.

Those other people are not kind and do not deserve to be the friend of this lovely person who made dinner for nine people.

I think something very good has come out of this event.

I think you three have found friends in one another and and I think you, unfollowing the others shows a strength of character in you that is pleasing.

You are putting yourself first and saying you will not be around unkind and disrespectful people.

This is is good thing you have done. You’re building inner strength, resilience and integrity.

This is only ever a good thing. And you have delicious spaghetti for two days! :)

parhox − Oh well, you just hit a nerve for me. I used to have this group of friends in Highschool, we were 4 girls,

we had a group chat and all. .. but they had a separate group chat excluding me. It was hard to understand that I was the spare friend, it hurt.

I never did anything about it, I still considered them friends, but not best friends or even close friends but my spare friends.

Matched their energy. I would occasionally hang out with them, had a good time an all, but I found a group of friend who were really good and honest.

The 3 girls became my spare friends or distant friends and my new friends are still close friends to me to this day.

Thanks for being there for your friend, it's hard to assimilate that situation but maybe you can become the close friends and leave behind the spare friends.

Allyson_Chains − You and your friend seem to have outgrown your group, in terms of maturity.

You both don't feel inclined to exclude people simply to feel included. Maybe it's time to revaluate your friendships or simply downgrade a few ppl to acquaintances.

One of my favorite quotes fits here. ***It's okay to prefer four quarters over a hundred pennies. ***

BSmom − Your friend mentioned the real group chat to let you both know together. . I'd invest my time in those and ditch the rest.

Kanny-chan − Maybe you 2 should cut those assholes from your lives. I could never speak to them again after this, idk.

These users condemned the group as immature and cruel for deliberately excluding people

Whole-Ad-2347 − These people are bullies. I see many adults who are bullies and the main thing they do is to exclude certain people.

Sabrobot − How old are you? Ur group sounds really shallow and rude.

These commenters questioned why the poster was also excluded from the group’s “real” chat

bokxz − Glad this story has a happy ending for you and the left out friend. However one thing struck me as kinda odd,

why didn't the other friend tell you about the "real group chat".

I mean she obviously was the only other one to show up so clearly she cares about the other guy too but I just struck me as off

that if you were considered "part of the group" why the friend that is "safe" didn't fill you in. Edit: properly quoted OP' post

piranhas32 − Really interested to see why you were not part of the real group chat. Perhaps you are in the same boat?

Putrid_Awareness5339 − Like looking in a mirror. I have a friend who could qualify as “the spare friend” to “the group”.

She does her best but “the group” just doesn’t put the same effort towards her.

For some reason they choose who they will spend their energy toward and everyone outside of that will get what’s left if there is anything left.

Which like I get seems like how it should be but they also are the types who want all your energy too.

We “outsiders” formed our own little group to have fun, meet-ups and vacays but I’ve learned to just not really expect much from people.

Hangout when ya do but don’t pour too much into other peoples cups or you’ll run out.

Would you rather know that you’re somebody’s “spare friend,” or remain part of the group without ever discovering the hidden hierarchy?
