Man Finally Plans His First Birthday Home, But His Family Refuses to Make the 45-Minute Drive

Birthdays can feel especially meaningful when they mark the return to a life you spent years away from.

After more than a decade in the military, one man was hoping his first birthday back home would finally give his family a chance to celebrate together.

OP’s parents had already planned a vacation and forgot his birthday, while his brother and sister-in-law have repeatedly turned down his attempts to spend time together.

When his parents offered to make up for missing the occasion, OP chose one of his favorite restaurants for a birthday dinner.

His brother and sister-in-law refused to attend because the location and timing would interfere with their toddler’s routine, despite OP having made similar accommodations for their family in the past.

Now his parents want him to change the plans, but OP feels he has sacrificed enough. Is he being unreasonable for keeping his birthday dinner exactly where he wants it?

After 10 years away in the military, a man’s first birthday home exposes a painful family imbalance

'AITA for Not Changing the Location of my Birthday Dinner?'

Context/backstory: I, 32m, is celebrating my first birthday back home after

being in the military for over 10 years. I got out of the military last year

after my birthday so this is my first one home. My birthday was this past

weekend, and my parents originally forgot about my birthday and

scheduled a vacation that they couldn't/didn't want to cancel. My sibling

27m and his spouse 27f, live a few towns away. They only communicate

when they need/ want something. I have attempted for almost a year to

hangout, or meet up to spend time with my sibling. He either always

cancels or makes an excuse as to why they won't attend. The favorite

excuse involves their toddler and they use it frequently. I am aware that

having children makes it difficult to do things that you previously did

before they were in the picture, but I'm more than willing to usually

accommodate them and they would be welcomed at any hangout/meet up.

My spouse (26f) and I have gone out of our way for them to watch their

child, as well as meet up with them for their convenience. For example, we

drove over 45 minutes to meet up for my siblings spouses birthday.

Onto the current situation. My parents wanted to make it up to me for

missing my birthday. They told me I could pick wherever I wanted to eat, so

I chose one of my favorite restaurants that's in a town 30 minutes away

from us at 6 pm. My sibling and his spouse informed me that they will not

attend, saying that it's too inconvenient and would disrupt the night time

routine of their child or eating at a later time would mean they might have

a tantrum. They said they would attend if it were someplace in my town.

For reference, my town is approximately 30 minutes away from their

house, and the restaurant is approximately 45 minutes from their house.

I said that while I understand their reasoning that I'm disappointed that

they wouldn't try to find an alternative solution other than just not

attending, but they are adults and can do as they see fit.

For those of you who will ask why I didn't change the location to a place in

my town, the locations for sit-down dining are limited and we either eat at

them frequently or, due to dietary limitations that are new for me, I cannot

eat there. Plus, regardless of distance, or whether we liked the restaurant,

we accommodated them for their birthdays.

My parents feel that I should just change the location so they can attend,

but after no one wanted to spend time with me, my sibling and his spouse

were home the weekend of my birthday, or be home for my actual

birthday, I don't want to sacrifice my happiness to eat somewhere that I

don't want to or somewhere that will make me sick.

AlTA for not wanting to change where I have MY birthday dinner after no

one wanted to/or could do anything on my actual birthday? Also, WIBTA if I

decided to go no contact, because I'm tired of how I’m treated?

“Why should I give up the one thing I chose for my own birthday when everyone else has already decided I’m not worth the effort?”

After more than a decade in the military, OP is finally celebrating his first birthday back home, and the occasion has turned into a painful reminder of how little effort his family seems willing to make.

His parents initially forgot his birthday and planned a vacation instead, while his brother and sister-in-law have spent nearly a year declining attempts to spend time together.

OP and his wife have repeatedly accommodated their schedule, including driving nearly an hour to attend his sister-in-law’s birthday, watching their toddler, and arranging meetups around their convenience.

When OP’s parents offered to make up for missing his birthday, he chose a restaurant he genuinely enjoys.

It is about 30 minutes from his parents and roughly 45 minutes from his brother’s home.

His brother and sister-in-law refused, saying the distance would interfere with their toddler’s bedtime routine.

They offered to attend only if OP moved the dinner to his own town.

The request might sound reasonable in isolation. The problem is the pattern behind it.

OP has spent almost a year trying to see his brother, while his brother repeatedly cancels or invokes his child as the reason plans cannot happen.

OP understands that parenting can make spontaneous plans difficult, but he also believes compromise should work in both directions.

His family has previously expected him to accommodate their schedules, yet now that he has selected something meaningful for himself, they are asking him to rearrange it again.

There is nothing inherently unreasonable about parents protecting a young child’s routine.

A toddler becoming overtired or missing their usual bedtime can create a difficult evening for everyone.

However, that does not automatically make OP responsible for solving the problem.

His brother is free to decline the invitation. OP is equally free to keep the restaurant he chose.

What makes the situation particularly painful is that this dinner was supposed to compensate for his parents missing the original birthday.

OP is not demanding that everyone travel across the country or endure something dangerous.

He chose a restaurant that works with his current dietary restrictions and is somewhere he actually wants to celebrate.

Moving the dinner would mean sacrificing the very thing he was asked to choose.

The strongest argument against OP is that changing the restaurant might allow the entire family to celebrate together.

If his priority were simply maximizing attendance, moving it could be the easiest solution. But that does not mean he has an obligation to do so.

There is a difference between accommodating someone’s legitimate limitation and repeatedly making yourself responsible for ensuring everyone else is comfortable.

The no-contact question is more complicated. OP’s frustration is understandable, but going directly from disappointment to permanent estrangement may be premature.

No contact is a significant decision, particularly when the underlying issue may be years of accumulated resentment rather than one dinner.

A temporary step back could give him space to decide whether he actually wants to end the relationship or simply stop chasing people who rarely reciprocate.

He also does not need to announce some dramatic family cutoff. He can simply stop initiating every interaction.

If his brother wants a relationship, the responsibility can become mutual. OP can remain civil, respond when appropriate, and see whether anyone makes an effort without being repeatedly prompted.

Most importantly, OP should not let guilt convince him that choosing his own birthday celebration is selfish.

After years of military service and a long period away from home, wanting one dinner at a restaurant he enjoys is hardly an unreasonable demand.

His brother can choose not to attend. His parents can choose whether they want to join him. Everyone has that freedom.

OP’s family may not realize how much their repeated cancellations have accumulated.

For him, this is no longer about a 15-minute difference in driving time. It is about feeling like he is always the person expected to bend.

So no, OP is not the asshole for keeping his chosen restaurant.

And before going completely no-contact, I would stop chasing the relationship and see what happens when the effort is no longer coming almost entirely from his side.

Sometimes stepping back reveals more than another argument ever could.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters felt OP had been repeatedly overlooked by his family and no longer needed to keep chasing their attention

ultra_violet007 − NTA. No shame in going no contact with people who've

proven they couldn't give less of a damn about you. If they can't give you

one meal, you don't owe them another minute. Also - happy birthday! Go

out either by yourself or with the people that feel good to be around.

JeSuisJacqOui − NTA and go no or very low contact. it really is the only answer.

Natenat04 − Life is too short to beg for basic respect from those who

should have given it freely. Go no contact with everyone who treats you

like an inconvenience, build the family of your choosing, and find happiness

and peace. Also, thank you for your service, and sacrifice! NTA

These commenters felt there was no reason for OP to change the location of his own birthday dinner

1silvervixen − NTA It's your birthday so go to the restaurant you prefer,

damn them. Go and enjoy good food and the people who do show up. As

for your brother & SIL, you don't have to go no contact. Next time they

invite you just say you can't and give some excuse (sorry Bro we just can't make it.

I know you understand) The next time he calls needing something (sorry

Bro no can do. I know you understand) Either he'll get the hint or he'll stop

calling. Don't you invite him to anything else until he changes how he treats you

Darklydreaming77 − NTA, why do YOU have to change the location of

YOUR birthday dinner to suit other people? ? Especially after being

ignored/forgotten on the actual day. It's your first birthday celebration at

home, if you wanted a place 2 hours away it's you're call.

These people all sound insufferable, sorry that they're your family, but

maybe it's time to make your own family with a friend group and your wife. You deserve better OP

These commenters viewed the situation as part of a larger pattern rather than a one-time scheduling problem

Material_Cellist4133 − It’s time to tell you parents “Unless you forgot, you

forgot my birthday. I’m already being generous enough to forgive you for

doing something s__tty. Don’t expect me to do more. ” NTA. But at least

you should now recognize how much your family values you…

Potato_Brain12 − Small Update: My wife and I have decided to not go to

dinner and I told my parents I need some space. I will do a detailed update when there is more to tell.

Lisa_Knows_Best − NTA. They don't seem to care about you or your

birthday. Assuming your parents are paying they're probably just upset

about missing out on a free meal, sorry to be so blunt, because obviously

an extra 15 minute drive is not a big deal whether they have a child or not.

Stop helping them, they don't appreciate you.

This commenter suggested that OP may have experienced a common difficulty after leaving military service

DespisedTurnip − Brother you’ve got 10 years in the military. You saw it

when you were home on leave, everyone family or friend moved on with

life and forgot to do for you what you would do for them. Getting out

doesn’t change that as much as it sucks.

Call the boys from when you were in and plan somewhere to meet up once

in a while, they’ll be more reliable than just about everyone back home and that’s guaranteed.

OP’s birthday dinner was meant to be a chance to finally celebrate being home after more than a decade away, yet once again, he was expected to accommodate everyone else.

His sibling had plenty of reasons for declining, but OP had already spent nearly a year trying to make plans work around their schedule.

Choosing a restaurant that suited his own needs for one evening hardly seems unreasonable.

Still, going completely no-contact is a much bigger decision. Do you think OP should hold his ground, or compromise one more time?

Would you go low-contact or cut ties altogether? Share your thoughts below!
