Music Teacher Punishes Deaf Student – But the Principal Sees the Truth

in Social Issues

The scene was a high school music room, buzzing with restless energy as students filed in for a double period. Among them was an 11-year-old boy, new to the school and already carrying a heavy challenge, he was profoundly deaf in both ears, relying on cochlear implants to make sense of the world.

Most teachers knew, most adjusted, and most treated him with patience. But one music teacher, known for her rigid rules and fiery temper, refused to bend. What unfolded in her classroom would expose not just her lack of awareness, but also her inability to see the humanity of a child trying his best.

Music Teacher Punishes Deaf Student - But the Principal Sees the Truth

'Music teacher gets mad at me for not being able to hear her (Im deaf)?'

Hi, my first post on Reddit, so please excuse any formatting mistakes/any other mistakes.. *Obligatory statement that I'm on mobile yada yada yada*. TL:DR at the bottom for you lazy...

So this happened a couple years ago when I was fresh at high school, in year 7 (I was in the grade for 11 year olds for international peeps).

One important thing to note with me is that I'm profoundly deaf in both ears, and cannot hear a single thing without the use of my cochlear implants (CI).

However I can lip read pretty accurately so I'm not completely lost without them. Another thing to note is that my CI run on batteries and these need to be...

Most of the teachers were pretty understanding about this and would often go out of their way to make sure that I could clearly hear

what they were saying (such as seating me towards the front of the class, and standing directly in front of me when addressing the whole class).

Except for one teacher who was a hardass about it. She also happened to be a music teacher, she will be known as Ms O.

Also this is probably the worst combo because music is also my weakest subject (for obvious reasons).. *Enter malicious compliance.

My and my form (we're a pretentious school and like to call the class that we register and go to lessons with our 'form'), are off to our music lesson,

and this happens to be a double period (yes we're pretentious and period means lesson) which is about 1 hour and 30 minutes long.

Anyway so we start the lesson, and pretty much 2 minutes after we sit down, the batteries in my CI had run flat (remember how I told you earlier that...

and so I needed to change them. However as my bag (which had my batteries in it) was in the room next door, I decided to raise my hand (like...

and ask if I can go and grab my batteries. At this point I could still lip read, and understand what the teacher was saying, but I'd much rather be...

Anyways she pretty much ignores the fact that my hand is up, and after a couple minutes I pretty much get the hint that she doesn't want to answer my...

I thought 'Whatever' I can still lip read and understand most of what she's saying. So Ms L basically asks the whole class to go on the computers, listen to...

and then use that as inspiration to digitally create our own piece of music. She also wanted us to show it to the class at the end of the lesson.

Now because I didn't want to get into trouble, I raise my hand again to try and ask if I can get the batteries from my bag, but she ignores...

So I'm like ... I don't even like music anyway so no big deal. As a result, I pretty much sit in front of the computer screen doing nothing,

as I can't hear the audio file or make any somewhat decent piece of music (remember this is a a double period, so a pretty long wait).

After 5 minutes, I get bored and I decide to start talking to my friends (did I mention I can lip read?) And basically let them in on the joke,

and we're all trying our hardest to not laugh too hard. Pretty soon, word gets around the class and now they can't wait until the end of the lesson to...

End of the lesson rolls around, and when it's my turn to play my piece of music, and I pretty much sit in silence, and the whole class starts laughing...

This is how the conversation goes between me and her at that point:. Ms L : Can you not hear me?

I asked you to play your piece of music. (Ironic, ikr). Me: sits in silence, and the laughter is getting louder

Ms L: Are you even listening to me????? Are you trying to disrespect me by not listening to anything I say???. Me: well.

Ms L: Honestly, just play your piece of music, it's not that hard.. Me: trying to stifle my laughter at this point I can't.

Ms L: cuts me off This is how your treat your teachers???? Get out of the class right now!

So I get out and pretty much wait there until the lesson is over, I think she was expecting an apology from me (which was never going to happen)

because after a couple minutes she pops her head out of the door and barks at me:

"YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO RESPECT FOR YOUR TEACHERS, MEET ME AT THE CITY VIEW AT LUNCHTIME!!!. So I'm like yea yea ok whatever.

At lunchtime, I meet her at the principal's office like she said.. Another important thing, is that I'm pretty friendly with the headmaster.

She opens the door and the conversation is as follows: Ms L: this guy was giving me an attitude during my lesson and wouldn't listen to me.

I would give him a Friday after school detention but I feel that he deserves to get a Saturday detention. Headmaster: turns to me what happened?

Me: well my batteries for my CI died and I raised my hand to ask if I could get the replacement batteries from my bag, but she proceeded to ignore...

Ms L: looks like she just had an epiphany. Headmaster: We'll are you sure about this, because he has not prior record about being disobedient?

Ms L: looking a bit flabbergasted Yes I'm absolutely sure he was disrespecting me. Me: Sir, you know that I'm deaf and that I would never on purposely do that...

Headmaster; We'll I'm inclined to believe the student here, if you have no proof otherwise, there is nothing to discuss.

Ms L then goes extremely red as she realises her mistake and storms out of the office. The headmaster gave me a slight smile before ushering me out of the...

Ever since then, she's never ignored me whenever I've had my hand up :). Thanks for reading this ♥️, I know it was extremely long.

TL:DR I'm deaf and need cochlear implants (CI) to hear, batteries in my CI go flat, and music teacher gets mad at me cuz I didn't do any work cuz...

Proceeds to embarrass herself in front of the headmaster Edit: wow I didn't realise I'd get this much of a response, thank you so much for the gold

and silver and also the general response has been largely positive 🤠. Edit: stupid spelling mistake in my original edit. Edit: spelling mistakes

When Batteries Died, Patience Did Too

The boy, seated quietly at his desk, felt the sudden silence he dreaded, his cochlear implant batteries had died. His replacements were in his bag, left in the adjoining room.

Dutifully, he raised his hand, waiting for permission to fetch them. The teacher, Ms. L, never acknowledged him. After several minutes, he gave up, resigned to lip reading for as long as he could.

Soon, Ms. L instructed the class to listen to an audio file on the computers and compose their own digital music. Again, the boy raised his hand. Again, he was ignored. He could neither hear the file nor create music from it.

Left without options, he sat idle. His friends, catching on, stifled laughter at the irony of the situation, the deaf student asked twice for help in music class, only to be dismissed.

By the end of the lesson, when it was his turn to present, silence filled the room. Ms. L grew irritated, her voice rising: “Can you not hear me? Are you even listening?”

The class burst into laughter at the absurdity of the question. The boy, biting back his own amusement, tried to explain but Ms. L cut him off, accusing him of disrespect before ordering him out.

The Principal’s Office Showdown

Lunchtime brought the next act of this drama. Ms. L marched the boy to the headmaster’s office, demanding he face severe punishment, even a rare Saturday detention. Confident in her authority, she accused him of blatant disrespect and defiance.

The headmaster, however, knew the boy well. Calmly, he asked for his side of the story. The boy explained that his cochlear implant batteries had died, that he had tried twice to ask for permission to replace them, and that Ms. L had ignored him both times.

The teacher’s face shifted as the truth sank in. She insisted he had disobeyed, but the headmaster wasn’t convinced. With no history of misbehavior and no evidence to back her claim, the boy was believed.

Ms. L, realizing her mistake, flushed red and stormed out of the office. The headmaster gave the boy a quiet smile, silently acknowledging both his ordeal and his dignity in handling it. From that day on, Ms. L never ignored his raised hand again.

What Should Have Been Done?

Had Ms. L taken a moment to check why her student wasn’t participating, the entire debacle could have been avoided. Instead of assuming disrespect, she could have asked a simple question: Why aren’t you working?

Experts in inclusive education stress that awareness of students’ needs is non-negotiable.

As education consultant Dr. David Mitchell wrote in Inclusive Education is a Human Right (2019), “Teachers must not only know their students’ abilities but also anticipate their challenges.”

Ms. L’s failure was not just in discipline, but in her refusal to see beyond her frustration.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

One commenter praised the clever response, another noted the boss’s lack of awareness, while a third found the idea of Saturday detentions at an English school surprisingly extreme.

DanTheBritshMan − As a fellow CI wearing person it's always amazing when someone comes in going

"ARE YOU DEAF I'VE BEEN" and they just trail off as they realise who they were shouting at. Awesome MC. :D

snikisd − I’m surprised she didn’t walk around and check everyone was working. She would have seen you doing nothing and work out why. But your response was great OP!

[Reddit User] − Honestly, I didn't take your school as pretentious until I hit I feel that he deserves to get a Saturday detention.

Seriously. I have never heard of an English school doing Saturday detentions. Like form and double lessons are pretty standard, but Saturday detentions? Come on.

A clueless teacher tried to make a blind student describe a picture, a music teacher didn’t even understand hearing devices.

MadKitKat − Sounds like the time my fifth grade teacher told my blind classmate to describe a picture. It was what the text book read as an assignment, but the...

Teacher went “nope, you gotta describe the pic,” we ended up doing it over the phone with me dictating it to her

because all teachers in our school weren’t exactly good people (but those are a bunch of stories for other subreddits).

morgan423 − One would think that if you were a music teacher, you would know who your hearing impaired students are and how their hearing aids worked

(they likely would have them) and the necessary maintenance that you should plan for. I guess you don't have to go through logic classes to get certified as a music...

r_ca − When people get mad at deaf people for not listening it’s like not even infuriating anymore because they just made themselves look like an i**ot.

It’s instant karma. Also, what kind of battery does your CI take? My parents’ batteries only last a couple hours at most so I’m curious!

Mystic_Arts − How does "period" and "form" make you pretentious? Its basic secondary school vocabulary in england

A teacher mocked a deaf student only to be shut down with a bold comeback, another ignored a kid until they threw up.

MikeyHatesLife − Ha! I’m deaf and wear hearing aides, and did a similar thing to one of my teachers. Seventh Grade English, first week with Mrs. D,

and none of have ever had her before. As usual, I always sit in the first row if I can do that I can pay attention to what’s going on.

I’ll admit to having her bad habit at the time of saying “huh? ”an awful lot. But it still doesn’t excuse the teacher’s behavior.

So she comes at me with “‘Huh? Huh? ’ Why do say that all the time? Are you deaf or something?

”I don’t know where I got the courage from, but maybe I was only gonna allow my classmates to pick on me? I shot back with, “as a matter of...

Maybe if your read your students’ files, you’d know what was happening in your own classroom. ” Dead silence in the whole room.

She apologized and left me alone for a few weeks, but at least she did try to speak with more enunciation. What I sorta liked/didn’t like was that

as we all left the room at the bell, people who’d been picking on me, or even bullying me for *years* were pissed at her and said she was horrible.

Okay, thanks for having my back, but where were these nice versions of you since elementary school? We coulda been friends this whole time!

Later on, some of Mrs. D’s fellow teachers tried to tell me she really was a nice person, but I wasn’t having it.

We became friendly near the end of the year, but that’s not something many people can come back from.

(Nobody clapped, it really happened, this was around 1984, and I still can’t figure out why I finally stood up for myself in this situation. )

Bangarang_1 − My 2nd grade teacher ignored my raised hand during a math lesson once. I proceeded to throw up on the floor.

Seascorpious − Ms L: looks like she just had an epiphany Lmao I can imagine her face right now. "He refused to listen to me. Oh. "

A Silent Stand That Spoke Volumes

What began as a boy’s silent struggle ended in a teacher’s public embarrassment. He walked away vindicated, his dignity intact, while she was left with a hard lesson in humility.

But the question lingers: was this simply a clash of misunderstanding, or was it a deeper failure of compassion in a place meant for learning?

And if teachers cannot listen to the voices or even the silence, of their students, how much of the music of education are they missing?
