Neighbor Turns a Shared Laundry Room Into Her Side Business, Then Can’t Believe Someone Reports Her

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Shared facilities only work when everyone remembers that they are shared.

A laundry room with a limited number of machines can become a surprisingly big source of conflict when one person starts treating it like their private business.

The original poster noticed that a neighbor was constantly occupying several washers and dryers in their apartment building.

Eventually, OP discovered she was running a paid laundry service for people who did not even live there, bringing in huge bags of clothes and filling the machines for hours.

After repeatedly being forced to take their own laundry elsewhere, OP checked the building rules and found that commercial use of the laundry room was explicitly prohibited.

They reported what was happening to management, and the neighbor’s side business quickly came to an end.

Now she keeps complaining about whoever reported her, completely unaware that the person she talks to about it is the one who made the report.

Read on to see how OP handled it.

A neighbor turns a shared laundry room into a side business, pushing one resident to quietly report her

not the actual photo

'I got my neighbor’s laundry side hustle shut down?'

We have a small laundry room in my building with four washers and four dryers.

One of my neighbors started doing laundry for people as a side hustle. At

first I had no idea what was going on, I just noticed she was constantly

using multiple machines at once.

Eventually I realized she was doing paid laundry for people who didn't even

live in the building. She'd bring in huge bags from customers, wash and dry

everything in our shared machines, then return it to them.. It slowly got ridiculous.

I'd come downstairs after being on moon and all four washers would be

running, then she'd show up with another couple bags as soon as they

finished. Sometimes there were bags with people's names written on them sitting all over the room.

I asked her once if she could at least leave one machine open because

those were supposed to be for everyone in the building.. She basically told me to come at a different time.

After having to take my laundry somewhere else twice because she had

everything occupied, I checked our building rules. Using the shared laundry

room for any kind of business was specifically prohibited.. So I took a few

pictures over the next couple weeks and emailed management.

They put up a notice shortly after saying the laundry room couldn't be used

for outside laundry or business purposes and apparently spoke to her

directly.. She stopped almost immediately.

She talks to me pretty often and has complained multiple times about

whoever reported her. She told me the extra income had actually been

pretty good and she couldn't understand why somebody cared so much..

Every time she complains I just say something like “yeah, that sucks.”

Shared amenities only work when everyone treats them as shared resources.

The problem here was never that a neighbor found a creative way to earn extra money.

It was that she effectively turned a communal laundry room into a small commercial laundromat, leaving other residents to work around her schedule.

The neighbor’s perspective is easy to understand up to a point.

She found a service people were willing to pay for, the machines were available, and the income apparently became worthwhile.

Once she started occupying all four washers and dryers repeatedly, though, the arrangement stopped being a harmless side hustle.

Other residents were paying for access to the building’s amenities through their housing costs and could no longer reliably use them.

Her response that everyone else should simply “come at a different time” is especially telling because it treated her private business as though it had priority over everyone else’s ordinary needs.

There is also an interesting psychological phenomenon here: people can become accustomed to a privilege once it works in their favor.

What began as occasional use may gradually feel normal, even when the scale has changed dramatically.

Because nobody initially challenged her, she may have interpreted the absence of complaints as permission.

From her perspective, the eventual report probably felt like someone suddenly taking away an income source rather than someone enforcing a rule that had existed all along.

Research on boundary-setting helps explain why the situation escalated without a direct confrontation.

Psychologists generally distinguish between expressing a reasonable boundary and attempting to control another person’s behavior.

A shared rule established by building management is not OP’s personal preference; it defines how a communal resource can be used.

The most amusing part is that she keeps complaining about the mysterious person who reported her while apparently talking to that very person without realizing it.

OP’s response: “yeah, that sucks” is almost comically diplomatic.

There was no need for revenge, public confrontation, or a personal feud. The rule did the work.

The neighbor can still run her laundry business elsewhere, while residents get their shared machines back.

Sometimes the cleanest way to handle entitlement is not to fight it personally.

Document the problem, use the proper channel, and let the rule speak for itself.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters backed OP and said the neighbor’s greed and entitlement caused her own downfall

Lives4Sunshine − And had she been polite and left at least one of each

open for others, she would still be in business today. Play stupid games. .

vr0202 − “… . She told me the extra income had actually been pretty good

and she couldn't understand why somebody cared so much. .. Well, she got

greedy, that’s why. I would have made one machine available at all times,

always let a resident go ahead of me, intentionally paused a day or two

here and there to make myself less visible, and so on.

She can only blame herself for the lost income.

captivatingcrimson − She was being an a__hole and entitled. I would’ve done the same!

CoolAnt6 − You did the right thing. .She was taking advantage of the washers and dryers. .Good for you. .

QuokkaSoul − Why didn't she just offer to do your laundry for free? Then everyone is taken care of!

Jack_Stuart_M23 − Wow, what an oblivious, inconsiderate, d-bag. I swear

there are so many people that society would be better without. Edit: I hope

it's obvious that I'm talking about the person with the side hustle, not OP  😂.

These commenters said using shared facilities for business was unfair, costly, and prevented other residents from using them

RainyDaysAndMondays3 − She would ultimately have cost you money.

That's a lot of additional wear and tear on the machines, extra electricity,

and extra water, and having to replace all the machines sooner than they

otherwise would have. The property owners would very, very likely have

passed those costs down to tenants.

Maybe it wouldn't have added up to much, but if nothing else, it's the

principal of the thing. That should would be fine making money off of the

backs of other people (not to mention being entitled, rude, and

inconveniencing everything), she's unethical.

dataexception − F__k that. She's not entitled to any more than her fair

share of the laundry room and time. Good on you. She can buy her own

washers and pay her own electricity, maintenance, and water bills.

leon_tray − You don’t really have much to feel guilty about. The issue

wasn’t that she had a side hustle, it was that she was using a shared facility

for a business and preventing other residents from using it. You even asked

her directly to leave a machine available, and she dismissed you. Reporting

a rule violation to management was reasonable.

Her losing an income stream is unfortunate, but that doesn’t make you

responsible for the consequence. And honestly, “yeah, that sucks” is

probably the perfect response when she complains about the person who reported her.

These commenters doubted the circumstances

megggie − Is there any reason she couldn’t do the same thing at a

laundromat? Not as convenient for her but shouldn’t be a huge difference

unless the residents’ laundry machines were free to use (I never saw that

when living in apartments, it was always coin-operated laundry).

whiskeylullaby3 − I’m having a hard time believing this. Maybe I’m just

cynical. Why would people give her bags of clothes when they easily and

more cheaply could drop them at a laundromat? And that many people at

the same time. Why would your building specifically say you can’t use the

machines for an outside business instead of just saying they’re solely for the use of residents?

And then she complains to you, who already complained to her about

hogging the machines and asking to leave one open…

What started as a convenient side hustle became a problem once one resident effectively turned a shared laundry room into a commercial laundromat.

With only four washers and four dryers, occupying every machine repeatedly meant other residents were being pushed out of a service they were already paying for through their housing.

The building rules also clearly prohibited commercial use, so OP simply documented the situation and let management handle it.

Was reporting her justified given the impact on everyone else, or should OP have tried talking to her again first? Share your thoughts below.
