Office Worker’s Lunch Kept Getting Stolen—So He Locked It Up And Unintentionally Started Office Drama

You might laugh about lunch theft… until it keeps happening to you. That’s what happened to one Redditor who posted in the AITA subreddit after his lovingly prepared meals mysteriously vanished five times from the shared office fridge.

After no one owned up and the polite warnings went ignored, he bought himself a little desk fridge and locked it. Problem solved, right? Not quite. That’s when things got weird. A particular coworker called him “paranoid” and “not a team player,” while others began making snide comments. Reddit, however, thinks he did the right thing—and may have even flushed out the thief without realizing it.

Let’s dig into the delicious drama (and possible exposure) one refrigerated lunch at a time.

Office Worker’s Lunch Kept Getting Stolen—So He Locked It Up And Unintentionally Started Office Drama

One man’s battle against an office lunch thief led to a locked mini fridge and a showdown with a coworker who called him out.

'Aita For Locking The Office Fridge After Someone Kept Stealing My Lunch?'

I (34M) work in a small office with about 10 people. We share a communal kitchen, including one fridge. Over the past month, my lunch has been stolen *five times*. Not just random snacks entire homemade meals I bring from home, gone without a trace.

It’s not just frustrating, it’s expensive and messes up my day. I mentioned it a couple of times in the group chat, like “Hey, someone’s been taking my lunches. Please stop.” Everyone either ignored it or sent vague messages like “ugh that sucks” or “some people are the worst,” but no one took responsibility. So I bought a mini fridge and put it under my desk. Nothing fancy, just enough to hold my meal and a drink.

I also put a little lock on it just for extra peace of mind. Since then, no more stolen lunches. Well, last Friday, one of my coworkers (I'll call her Dana, 29F) confronted me during lunch and said it was “weird and selfish” that I had a personal fridge.

She said it made me “look paranoid” and “not part of the team. ” I said I was tired of my food being stolen, and this was the only solution that worked. She said I should’ve just brought stuff I wouldn’t care about losing, like snacks or microwave meals, if I was so worried.

A couple of others have now made little comments like, “Don't let him see your lunch he might lock it up,” or “We get it, you're special. ” I’m starting to feel like the weirdo in the office just for protecting my stuff. AITA for locking up my lunch instead of letting this keep happening?

Nothing ruins a workday like a stolen lunch, and this Redditor’s saga of vanishing meals is a workplace whodunit. After losing five homemade dishes in a month, he invested in a mini fridge with a lock, only to have coworker Dana label him “paranoid” and “not a team player.” Her pushback, plus snide remarks from others, suggests more than just office banter—could Dana be the hungry culprit, or is this just petty workplace politics?

Workplace theft, even of something as “small” as lunch, erodes trust. Dr. Pamela Rutledge, a workplace psychologist, notes in a 2022 Forbes article, “Small violations, like taking someone’s food, signal a lack of respect and can destabilize team dynamics”. Dana’s suggestion that the Redditor bring “less desirable” snacks implies she sees his food as fair game, a mindset that dismisses personal boundaries. Her public confrontation also hints at deflecting guilt, as several Redditors suspected.

Office kitchens are notorious for petty thefts. A 2023 survey by Office Depot found that 60% of employees have had food stolen from communal fridges, with 25% admitting to taking a coworker’s snack. The Redditor’s mini fridge was a practical fix, yet Dana’s reaction frames it as a personal slight. This could reflect a broader issue: some coworkers view shared spaces as free-for-alls, ignoring individual rights.

Dana’s comments and the group’s teasing suggest a clique-y dynamic, where conformity trumps fairness. The Redditor’s lock isn’t just about lunch—it’s about asserting control in an environment where his boundaries were ignored. Neutral advice? Keep the fridge, ignore the snark, and consider a polite chat with the boss about workplace respect. If Dana’s the thief, her discomfort speaks volumes. What do you think—is he justified, or did he stir the pot too much?

Reddit’s lunch detectives smelled a rat, pointing fingers at Dana and slamming the office’s casual attitude toward theft. Here’s what the community dished out:

StAlvis called out the office’s bizarre tolerance for theft, questioning their workplace culture.

StAlvis − NTA I should’ve just brought stuff I wouldn’t care about losing A couple of others have now made little comments like, “Don't let him see your lunch—he might lock it up,” or “We get it, you're special.” What the heck industry do you work in where **_casually permissive attitudes towards theft_** seem to be a hiring requirement?

No-Assistant-1948 suggested matching the coworkers’ snark with playful jabs to keep things light.

No-Assistant-1948 − NTA. But just give the same energy back. They are treating it like a joke, so keep it at a joke level. Don't be serious. 'Haha watch out OP, food thieve may be around! ' And you respond with,'good one, but haven't seen Dana all morning! ' Lmao. Also I take no responsibility for what happens after this.

JohnnySkidmarx advised calling out the thief publicly to see who squirms, hinting at Dana.

JohnnySkidmarx − Your reply should be “Yeah, it sucks that I had to buy a refrigerator but what were my options since a dirtbag thief kept stealing my lunch? I mean, how big of a loser does someone have to be to steal other people’s lunch. ” Whoever gets angry at that comment is your thief.

Regularforcesmedic proposed snarky comebacks, like offering Dana cooking lessons for her “cravings.”

regularforcesmedic − NTA. I'd respond with equal snark. 'Haha... I guess we know who is missing my home cooked lunches. Do we need to chip in and get Dana cooking lessons? Watch out, next she'll be raiding my home fridge. I better pay attention to my doorbell camera.

Aasoro flat-out accused Dana of being the lunch thief, citing her odd resentment.

aasoro − NTA. Dana is your lunch thief. Any reasonable person would've understood you bringing a mini fridge to save your stuff.

Jazzy404404 criticized the manager’s inaction and pegged Dana as the culprit.

Jazzy404404 − Nta, The one who first confronted you is the one who has been stealing your lunch. Also f**k the other people who keep joking about it, it's your lunch that you paid for. Also, why isn't your manager doing something about it?

Spiralinnigirl argued only a thief would care about the Redditor’s fridge solution.

Spiralinnigirl − NTA and it's more than 1 person taking your lunch. Just respond back, 'The only person who would have a problem with this is an actual thief. So not worried about their feelings.

Albino_red_head raged at Dana’s entitlement, suggesting a scorched-earth lunch toss.

albino_red_head − why would anyone give a s**t what you have going on under your desk??? Who actually cares where you keep YOUR food? You're living in crazy town. Dana was stealing your lunches and feels justified in doing so and now she's spreading awkward rumors about you being paranoid.

Maybe you should just steal everyone's f**king lunch and toss int eh trash for a week and if they confront you just say whatever Dana said to you. F**k them all. Scorched earth.

Mirvb urged confronting Dana directly to gauge her reaction to theft accusations.

Mirvb − NTA WTF is wrong with these people? clearly Dana has identified herself as the thief. “She said I should’ve just brought stuff I wouldn’t care about losing, like snacks or microwave meals, if I was so worried. ” This is ridiculous.

I don’t care if you brought a can of beans or a stick of gum as your lunch. You don’t want it stolen. I’d directly ask Dana if she’s the thief just to see what she says. If she lies and denies it- ask her why she’s so concerned with your lunch if she’s not the thief?

Mushrooming247 noted Dana’s detailed knowledge of the Redditor’s lunches screams guilt.

Mushrooming247 − Huh, sounds like “Dana, 29F,” is not only annoyed by your inaccessible lunches, but is also aware that you were bringing real food, not just snacks or microwaved meals, like she has seen inside your lunch bag before. r/RBI investigation completed.

This Redditor’s lunch lockdown turned his office into a petty crime scene, with Dana’s outburst hinting she might be the sandwich bandit. His mini fridge solved the thefts, but now he’s dodging snarky comments and feeling like the odd man out.

Was his lock a smart move, or did it make him the office outcast? Would you guard your grub or let it slide? Drop your spicy takes below and weigh in on this workplace drama!
