This Rescue Dog Stole Everyone’s Heart But She’s Still Waiting for a Home

Scrolling through endless online arguments can feel exhausting. Yet sometimes, a story appears that cuts through the noise with something simple and good.

That was the case when a popular discussion space shifted from judgments to kindness, spotlighting Hazel, a four-year-old Rottweiler-Boxer-Pittie mix who had spent two long years in foster care. Instead of heated debates, readers were met with a warm invitation to consider adoption over shopping.

Hazel was introduced not as a tragic case but as a gentle, happy dog who loved face kisses and playful bursts of silliness. Her story carried the hope of a permanent home, especially for families in New England.

And even though her adoption profile has since disappeared, likely a sign she finally found her family, the spirit of the story remains. At its heart, it asks whether one act of compassion can ripple outward and inspire more people to open their homes.

This Redditor’s rescue rally is a paws-itively uplifting romp, fetch a treat and settle in!

'Want to NOT be the a**hole? Adopt a dog in need!?'

Hi everyone, I'm your friendly, neighborhood subreddit founder. The rest of the team and I have been busting our humps day in and day out moderating away

the very worst vitriol and troll traffic we find in this space and we think we've earned the right to consider our growing forum NOT the most evil place on...

This is just ducky, but we think we can do more to make this a positive and generous place, even if we can't get y'all to behave all the time.

In addition to being really jazzed about telling others how to act, we have also discovered that we're a cabal of unapologetic dog lovers punctuated by a few weirdos who...

With that in mind, we've decided to try to do some good with our moralizing, finger-wagging forum by trying something new: The Rescue Dog of the Moment

If you miss the cute segment on morning news when they bring out a group of local shelter pets, to get them a publicity bump, but you never get to...

because who the hell is watching local morning news anymore,* then this post is for YOU!

Hazel is a 4 year old Rottweiler/Boxer(?) Pittie(?) who's been living in her foster home for 2 years waiting for her furever home. She's healthy and happy.

She is a sweet, gentle lady who loves to kiss faces and is prone to occasional bursts of silliness.

She's available to adopters in and around New England. If you'd like to consider giving Hazel the home she richly deserves.

If you aren't in the Northeast, but have the kindness to adopt a dog in need, try searching for a rescue organization on [Petfinder]

I promise that there are many great dogs and probably many great rescue orgs in your area!. Some ground rules:

The way it works is we're going to sticky this post until Hazel gets a home with a "furever" family.

We're not going to show you a dog and say he's on death row. We're not going to shock or depress you with a canine trainwreck and ask for donations...

We'll just keep one happy pup's picture up, while she's safe in a loving foster home, and hope that you'll share her pics and check out her rescue site until...

If a subscriber does adopt her, we'll even keep her sticky post up for a while after adoption, giving the adopter plenty of time to brag about their new furkid...

Let's see if 1.5 million potential assholes can bring a family together before the year's over! If you don't want to see rescue dogs, all you have to do is...

Full disclosure, I'm a board member of Hazel's rescue. No money is changing hands and no considerations are being offered or transferred between us.

I just want to make room for one more deserving dog to get out of the shelter system and get as many of you thinking about fostering, rescuing, and adopting-not-shopping...

P.S. If you happen to be Chrissy Teigen, please tweet about this! Edit: It seems there is a substantial group of people with h**red for dogs or specific breeds out...

and they have come to this discussion to try to spoil a good thing with baseless accusations fueled by paranoia. Whenever any dog has shown the slightest interest in chasing...

(or in Hazel's case, because she has chased squirrels and rabbits in her foster's yard), the rescue puts the exaggerated statement "They think that cats are tasty treats" into the...

and we never have to risk an adopter irresponsibly mixing that dog with their cat. Hazel has NO history of aggression against people or cats.

Anyone saying she was abandoned because of either of these things is making up stories.

*Out of abundant concern, the rescue will not place her with any households that will mix her with cats. As for small children...there is no history of aggression toward people...

It's my feeling that a healthy and friendly 65lb dog who occasionally runs around with excitement can knock little kids down and bump them by accident.

(Ever have a dog headbutt you because you were leaning over them when they decided to jump up? That kind of thing.)

The rescue will explain her energy level in detail to any family with small children who applies and let them decide if they think their child is old/large/mature enough to...

In some cases, the rescue will make that evaluation and not approve the application. This is a very thoughtful, careful process that is carried out in private between the individual

who knows the dog much better than I (or anyone in a comment stream making gross assumptions) does.

Why Hazel’s Story Struck a Chord

What made Hazel’s story compelling was its honesty. Her description celebrated her affectionate nature, while also being clear about her quirks.

She was not a match for homes with cats due to her chasing instincts, and families with very young children were advised to think carefully since her energy could accidentally knock little ones over.

Instead of glossing over these details, the description acknowledged them, creating trust with potential adopters.

That honesty matters. Too often, animals are presented with vague promises only for families to feel overwhelmed later. Hazel’s introduction showed that realistic expectations build stronger bonds.

It also helped challenge negative stereotypes. Breeds like Rottweilers, Boxers, and Pit Bulls often face unfair assumptions about aggression, yet experts emphasize that environment, training, and socialization shape behavior far more than breed labels.

Hazel’s profile showed her as she truly was: a loyal, joyful companion waiting for the right match.

Adoption Beyond the Feel-Good Factor

Of course, bringing a dog into a home is not only about love. It is also about responsibility. Large breeds like Hazel need long walks, regular exercise, and consistent routines.

Families who travel frequently must plan for kennels or sitters. Unexpected vet bills can arise, and patience is required to navigate training or settling-in hurdles.

Several voices reminded readers that adopting a dog is not about impulse but about readiness for a lifelong bond.

The statistics make the choice even more urgent. In 2024, shelters in the United States took in 5.8 million animals. Of those, 3.2 million were adopted, but more than 600,000 were euthanized because of overcrowding.

Mixed breeds like Hazel make up more than half of all shelter dogs, and they often show lower return rates than purebreds. The benefits are twofold: adopters gain a companion, and shelters gain space to save another life.

As ASPCA Adoption Director Rena Lafaille explains, “Adopting frees space for another in need and matches personalities perfectly. Puppies can be demanding, but adults like Hazel often settle in quickly with their known quirks.”

For families unsure about committing, fostering provides a low-pressure way to help. Sometimes those “temporary stays” end up becoming permanent, proving that the right fit often reveals itself with time.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Some joked about already having full houses yet still feeling tempted.

Turgid_Tiger − ESH Everyone's Sweet Here ❤ just this once 😋

Astro4545 − YTA, I’ve got six dogs and three cats. And you’re trying to tempt me to get more? And it’s working? !?!

studentd3bt − YTA You’re the adopter!

Others offered reminders that dogs are not toys, and that every adoption should come with preparation, time, and a genuine willingness to commit.

wpsp2010 − "A few weirdos who like cats" What if my cat acts like a dog?

hoesferatu − Thank you for not putting sad stories up. NTA 🐶🐶🐶

AsfAtl − YTA - You’re Totally Adorable!

Cheeriodarlin − Aww, thanks mods. NTA!

daisuki_janai_desu − I love looking at dogs but I could never take on the responsibility of having one. Please search your heart before adopting a dog.

Are you doing to provide the care and medical attention that it actually needs? I know so many people that adopt a dog and then n**lect it or get rid...

Pets deserve a forever home where they will be loved and cared for. Not tied up outside for days on end. (common in my city)

TheBumHead − If anyone from Australia (Brisbane area) sees this and wants to adopt an awesome friend I'm currently fostering a legend called who I decided to foster via Reddit.

He's a 1 yr old red cattle dog x kelpie who has big kangaroo ears and a stump tail. When he wags his tail his whole b**t wags.

The balance of lighthearted support and practical advice gave the story depth, showing that people could both celebrate Hazel and reflect on the responsibilities that come with adoption.

SocialJusticeTemplar − Just a caveat for potential dog owners, they are a responsibility, not a toy. \- When you go away on trips where you can't take your dog, you...

You have to hire a dog walker for when you're away at work and when you go away for a short trip/weekend. You will have to walk them in rain,...

Dogs are habitual creatures. They don't like their schedules messed up and get anxious when it happens.

If you have a larger breed that's bred for exercise like Labs, retrievers, border collies, etc, you need to walk them 5-6 times a day preferably at least 2 walks...

Those dogs are comfortable running around for 6-10 hours a day and were bred for energy and stamina.

We had a 10 lb dachshund that my dad walked for 3 hours a day (my dad would go hiking in the woods every morning from 6a to 9a), and...

A Hopeful Ending

Hazel’s profile may no longer be online, but her impact continues. Whether she is now curled up on a new family’s couch or still waiting for her perfect match, her story showed how a single spotlight can make a difference.

Instead of fueling arguments, this campaign encouraged compassion, action, and awareness.

Adopting a dog may not solve every debate about right and wrong, but it does create something lasting: a safe home, a second chance, and a bond that transforms both human and animal lives. And in the end, that is the kind of story worth repeating.
