Why TikTok Users Are Freaking Out About Where Vanilla Flavouring Comes From
Vanilla flavouring is a staple in many of our favourite foods and drinks, but what most of us don’t know is that it comes from an unlikely source. TikTok users are freaking out after discovering that the vanilla flavouring in their favourite drinks and desserts comes from beaver butts! Yes, you read that correctly. Beaver butts contain a chemical compound that is used to give vanilla its characteristic flavour and scent. If this news has left you feeling disgusted, you’re not alone. Many people are finding it hard to stomach knowing that the vanilla in their food comes from an animal’s behind!
Joanne Crawford, a wildlife ecologist at Southern Illinois University told National Geographic: “I lift up the animal’s tail. I’m like ‘Get down there and stick your nose near its bums.’ People think I am crazy – but it’s beavers; they smell really good!”
Beavers are said to use the brown slime to mark their territory. The musky, vanilla scent is attributed to a beaver’s diet of bark and leaves. Apparently getting the substance isn’t that easy, but people are willing to “milk” beavers because it tastes so good. I’m shocked and appalled.
