Marvel‘s Blade reboot, starring Mahershala Ali, seems to be stuck in an endless loop of starts and stops. The project has been plagued by director departures, script rewrites, and shifting priorities within the studio.
Mahershala Ali has, at times, had a stronger influence on the project than most actors on Marvel movies. This influence began when Ali, after winning an Oscar for his role in Green Book, called the studio and expressed his interest in doing Blade. According to sources, Ali has envisioned Blade as his version of Black Panther.
He even handpicked directors after the project lost its first helmer. However, both directors ended up leaving due to frustrations with the prolonged development process. Ali himself is reportedly growing increasingly impatient.
Several factors have contributed to Blade’s development woes. The 2022 writers’ strike and actors’ strike brought production to a halt. Additionally, Disney‘s recent focus on streaming content may have pushed Blade down the priority list. The constant changes in creative direction, including shifts in storyline and time period, haven’t helped either.
Despite the millions poured into development and pre-production, there’s no clear path forward for Blade. Marvel, however, seems determined to get it right. They’re taking their time with the script and are looking for a new director.
Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, acknowledges the importance of the Blade franchise. He sees potential in lesser-known characters, which was the core idea behind the MCU‘s success. It remains to be seen if Blade can finally escape development hell and deliver a film that lives up to the legacy of the original.
