Woman Sells Prized Manga Cheaper Than Market, Friend Lowballs Deal And Brands Her Choosing Beggar

A cash-strapped 27-year-old, heartbroken over selling her prized Cowboy Bebop manga collection (limited edition) listed them on eBay starting at $75. A friend, citing birthday vibes, lowballed with $30, framing it as a favor.

The seller held firm, the friend bumped to $35, then lashed out, branding her a “choosing beggar” for refusing the cut-rate deal. The sting of betrayal turns a desperate sale into a friendship fracture.

This Reddit clash of collector passion, loyalty tests, and desperation pricing sparks debates on fair value, emotional worth, and whether hard times warrant discounted dreams.

Woman sells her collectibles cheaper than market price, friend can’t make a good deal with her, calls her a choosing beggar.

'AITA for being a "choosing beggar"?'

I'm (27f) currently in a bit of a financial bind. I have some collectibles that I'm selling for a decent price (little cheaper than market price) for money.

Some of these are limited edition video games, out of print edition books, and some rare manga.

Most of them would sell for $150-300 because they're collector's items.

I listed the manga for Cowboy Bebop on eBay and the start price for the auction is $75.

I paid that much when I bought them and the median price for all 5 volumes seems to be about $150-200.

My friend messaged me and said she wants the manga for her boyfriend's birthday.

I asked her how much she's offering and she said $30. I said no and the price is firm, even for a friend.

Then she upped the price to $35... Still too low. I sent her a link to the auction and said she could bid on it like everyone else.

I added that if she doesn't like it, she's not worth being friends for such a lowball offer knowing that I'm in a bind.

She's upset and called ME a choosing beggar because I refuse to sell something for so cheap. AITA?

“Beggars can’t be choosers”, her friend said. But in this case, is this true at all? What’s more, is our Redditor a beggar at all?

Our seller’s buddy thought financial woe equaled fire-sale frenzy, offering pocket change for a prized five-volume Cowboy Bebop set worth $150-200 on the market.

The OP, already slashing her auction to $75 (what she originally paid), politely declined $30 and then $35, suggesting a fair bid instead. Boom. Accusations fly, and suddenly the seller’s the villain for protecting her wallet.

Flip the lens: The friend’s angle might stem from birthday panic or misplaced “helping hand” vibes. She sees a pal in need and figures a steep discount doubles as support: buy low, gift high, everyone’s happy?

But motivations scream opportunism when insults follow rejection. It’s classic lowball psychology: Exploit urgency, guilt-trip if it flops. Satirically speaking, if friendship came with price tags, this one’s marked “clearance rack” while demanding luxury treatment.

Zoom out to the bigger picture. Family and friend dynamics in tough times often breed these awkward haggling horrors. A 2023 Pew Research Center report on economic stress highlights how 41% of Americans face serious financial hardship, straining relationships as folks navigate support versus self-preservation. Here, the OP’s bind amplifies the tension. Selling beloved items isn’t a hobby, it’s survival.

Enter expert insight: In her Psychology Today interview, psychotherapist Esther Perel explains what sparks attraction amid vulnerability: “[It’s when] you see their wholeness. You see them as not needy and you see them radiating. So they are emanating something – generosity, kindness, joy, force, influence, persuasion – whatever it is. But you emanate something, you put something out there into the world when you radiate.”

Applied here, Perel’s words nail why the low offer stings: It flips empathy into entitlement, eroding trust. The friend could’ve countered with $100-120, saving on fees while honoring the seller’s research, win-win without the whiplash.

Neutral ground? Communication is key. OP could’ve softened with, “I get the birthday crunch, but this covers bills. Let’s find middle ground.”

For future flares, set boundaries early: “Market price or bust, rain check on favors.”

Broaden advice: In collectible circles, apps like eBay’s “Best Offer” prevent pal drama. Ultimately, weigh the item’s worth against the relationship’s – sometimes, blocking a leech preserves more than profit.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

BetweenWeebandOtaku − NTA. You're a choosing SELLER, not a beggar. It's absolutely up to you to set the price.

Them buying something from you is a transaction, not a favor. Your friend is an AH here, absolutely.

They're trying to take advantage of your bad situation then insulting you when it didn't work. At least you learned about their character.

atealein − NTA, is she trying to get an advantage of you because she thinks you need the money quickly? What sort of friend is that?

Penenko − Absolutely 100% NTA. Rare collectibles can hold a lot of value.

Any real friend would understand that if you're in a bad financial position

where you need to sell those things from your own collection, you should be selling for market value.

If she's interested in buying them, she can look up the price, see what they sell for, and see if you can work out a fair deal between you.

For instance, if she offered you $120 that might have been a good deal for both of you.

She'd save on market rate, you'd save on Ebay fees and shipping. But knowing the price of that set, $30 is a genuinely insulting offer.

It's not just below market value, it's below retail from many, many years ago. It's the kind of offer that can get a buyer blocked on Ebay.

So for her to get angry that you wouldn't accept it is absurd. She's not a friend who cares about your situation. She's a leech.

Others label the friend as the choosing beggar for lowballing.

Nerdygirl1984 − NTA. Wouldn't that make her the choosing beggar?

inFinEgan − NTA, and she's the choosing beggar. She could offer you $75 (half it's actual value) and get a great deal,

but she's trying to get it for half of what you paid for it and insulting you when you don't jump at the chance. You need new friends.

yukidaviji − NTA You seem to have done your research on prices, if the 5 volume is 150-200 and your price is 75,

you’re much lower than average already. You can set whatever price you want.

She’s being the choosing beggar by demanding you lower your price by at least half and then yelling at you when you wouldn’t.

She doesn’t have to buy your items.

Some affirm OP’s right to set any price for personal items.

Cathorizon − NTA, your friend obviously isn't entitled to your stuff, specially not when you're in a financial state so bad

you have to sell your beloved collector items. Best case scenario, she makes a good offer, and you ignore a slightly better one to make her happy

hushhhhnow − NTA She has no right to your belongings.

Even if you didn't have financial problems, it still would be strange to demand your own expensive things from you.

You friend is the a__hole here

DahDebil − Yeah, that's not how ANY of this works... NTA

Proof_Option1386 − NTA - it's s__tty of her to not only try to take advantage of your need,

but also to try to guilt you for not allowing her to do so. You are doing the right thing by calling her out and standing firm.

In the end, this manga mishap reminds us: Desperation doesn’t demand discounts, and real friends bid fair or bow out gracefully.

Do you think the Redditor’s firm stance was a power move or a friendship fumble?

Would you auction off treasures to a lowballing pal, or hit “block” faster than a speedrun?

How do you draw the line when money mixes with mates? Share your hot takes with us!
