Living with a chronic health condition can be exhausting, especially when the symptoms interfere with everyday activities and treatment after treatment fails to provide lasting relief.

For many women, making decisions about reproductive healthcare involves difficult conversations, medical procedures, and emotional preparation. But what happens when someone finally reaches an agreement with their doctors about a major surgery, only to discover that their insurance company might prevent it from happening?

One 35-year-old Redditor recently shared her frustration after years of debilitating menstrual symptoms, severe anemia, and repeated surgeries for fibroids and cysts. Despite trying multiple treatments, her condition continued to affect her quality of life, leaving her desperate for a permanent solution.

After extensive medical evaluations, she finally had a hysterectomy scheduled and began preparing for recovery. However, just days before the procedure, an unexpected insurance complication threatened to disrupt everything. Keep reading to discover why the situation left her feeling powerless over her own healthcare decisions.

'Apparently getting my own uterus taken out is a big ordeal'

An overly sweet muffin (delicious though) and an iced coffee, that I’m trying to choke down.

I don’t even know where to start. I’m pissed off. I’m sad. I’m angry. I’m a lot of things.

But mostly, I’m a female in the US and it f__king suuucks when it comes to our healthcare lol. Let me paint the picture:

I’m 35 and my periods are getting worse. To the point that my cramps make me so nauseous, I end up vomiting.

I am now considered “dangerously” anemic because of how much blood I lose at a time.

I go from biking 8 miles in a day, to bedridden for 3 when I get my period.

Then still bleeding for another 5-7 lol I fill up a menstrual cup in less than an hour. One time, I bled for literally 5 months straight.

No dramatics. 5. F__king. Months. I’ve tried different birth controls, didn’t help. I’ve started to continue to bleed heavy even with taking tranamexic acid.

I’ve had 2 surgeries already to remove fibroids and cysts. They can’t get them all out lol I’m like a fish filled with roe. Or at least that’s how I...

I’m done. I told the doctors that I don’t want to keep going in for tune-ups every 2-3 years. I needed a permanent solution and that meant a total hysterectomy.

I thought we were there. The surgery is scheduled for this week, literal days from now. It has been for 3 weeks now.

I’ve taken all the tests, scrapings, bloodwork, prior surgeries, everything to get here.

Dealt with people asking “Are you sure you want to do this?” and those fun conversations.

Just to now be told that insurance is of f__king course trying to push back on the approval now.

There is a very big chance that I wake up the morning of my surgery date just to be told that I won’t be having it (yet, at least).

This is some s__t. The case is there. It’s plainly laid out everything all that I have done to get to this point.

I’ve already put $1000 towards the surgery. I’ve already gotten the bill for a couple more thousand dollars to f__king pay.

I WANT TO DO THIS AND YET SOME PERSON AT A DESK HAS THE ABILITY TO SAY “Ehhh nah, not yet.”

I am feeling so many things. I’m sitting at my desk at work choking down tears because of course on top of dealing with this,

I am hosting about 10 executive leaders in the office this week too lmao

I’ve been mentally preparing for this surgery. The recovery that is absolutely going to suck. The permanent decisions that come with this procedure.

I’ve prepped the house so that my girlfriend has minimal things to do for upkeep, while I can’t move.

And for what? For someone else who does not live in this body to be able to have the final say?.

I am beyond coherent thoughts and sentences, at this point. This s__t is infuriating. Viva America, am I right?. /End scene.

Sometimes, the most exhausting part of living with a medical condition isn’t the physical suffering itself. It’s repeatedly having to prove that the suffering is serious enough to deserve treatment.

For someone who has endured years of pain, uncertainty, and unsuccessful procedures, finally choosing a permanent solution should bring some sense of relief. Instead, one 35-year-old woman has found herself facing another obstacle just days before her scheduled hysterectomy.

Her frustration goes far beyond an insurance disagreement. Severe menstrual bleeding has left her dangerously anemic, frequently bedridden, and sometimes vomiting from pain. She’s endured months of continuous bleeding, tried multiple medications, and undergone two surgeries.

After carefully considering the consequences, she decided that removing her uterus offered the possibility of escaping an exhausting medical cycle. Now, despite completing her preparations and paying substantial expenses, she faces the possibility of cancellation.

Interestingly, her anger may reflect something deeper than disappointment: the emotional exhaustion of repeatedly losing control over her own body. She has already accepted the physical recovery, financial burden, and permanent implications of surgery. Yet an administrative decision could interrupt everything.

Another perspective is that insurers use authorization requirements to evaluate medical necessity and manage costs. However, those administrative goals can conflict with the urgency experienced by patients whose daily functioning has already deteriorated.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recognizes that uterine fibroids can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pain, and anemia.

Its clinical guidance explains that hysterectomy may be considered when other treatments have failed or are unsuitable, while emphasizing that treatment choices depend on individual circumstances and patient preferences. Separately, the American Medical

Association reported in its 2026 survey that 95% of responding physicians experienced delays in patient care associated with prior authorization. These findings illustrate how administrative requirements can interfere with treatment plans even after patients and clinicians have carefully considered their options.

This medical perspective helps explain why the potential delay feels devastating. The woman isn’t making an impulsive decision. Her account describes prolonged suffering, unsuccessful treatment attempts, and extensive preparation.

There is also a less obvious emotional cost: she has already organized her home, arranged recovery support with her girlfriend, and mentally prepared for a life-changing procedure. Uncertainty now threatens the stability she worked to create.

A practical response would involve asking her surgical team to request an expedited authorization review, document the severity of her anemia, and clarify the available appeal options. Severe ongoing bleeding also warrants prompt medical attention.

Ultimately, bodily autonomy means more than being allowed to express a treatment preference. It means having that preference meaningfully considered within a healthcare system capable of responding to serious suffering.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These Redditors shared similar hysterectomy experiences and encouraged OP to keep fighting for care

-spicyshark − Oh I got a hysterectomy at 29 bc of endometriosis so I fully feel your pain.

I would go FERAL if someone tried to deny this. I am so sorry you're dealing with this and I truly hope it's an easy fix from here 🫶🏼

LateEvening6026 − I just had this happen to me. It got canceled last Monday, and I was supposed to have it last Tuesday.

The fun part is that insurance wasn’t even going to tell us. My doc caught that it wasn’t approved yet. She was so mad she was cussing.

You aren’t alone! ! Keep fighting the good fight!

CraftFamiliar5243 − I had mine out at 50 because of fibroids and was anemic because of the blood loss from horrific periods every 3-4 weeks.

My daughter had hers out at 34 because she had a fibroid the size of a squirrel that could not be ablated.

She had to see 3 doctors before her pain was taken seriously, by that time the fibroid was so large they could not do the surgery by laparoscopy.

Neither of us regrets it one bit. She kept her ovaries because of her age.

They kind of go into a revolt after taking out their friend the uterus, so be prepared for some hormonal mood swings and such but that will calm down.

If you don't have an incision then it's really a piece of cake. I was back at work for a few hours of desk work after just 6 days.

She got a block and never needed opiates. Really, compared to the cramps and blood loss of those periods, the recovery was easy.

CeilingCatProphet − Keep going! Evicting my uterus was the best decision ever.

These users criticized insurers for interfering with medical decisions and bodily autonomy

Bulky-Nectarine-5328 − I’m a nurse and it’s so frustrating to deal with insurance. Why do they get to make medical decisions over doctors and nurses?

It’s insane. On another note, do you have EDS or have you been tested for endometrial cancer?

What do they say is causing you to have excessive bleeding? Sorry if I missed it somewhere in your post.

EmmalouEsq − F__k this. I'm mad for you. It shouldn't even be a health issue. If your want a part of you that makes like miserable, it should just come...

They're shouldn't need to be tests to make sure you're not lying. There should be no talk about children or consent from a male partner.

You deserve to live your active life every day and have the part that's making life miserable taken out.

It shouldn't be 1 consult with a surgeon to know what to expect, and that's it.

Upper-Ad-3877 − I’m so sorry you are going through this. Not having control over our own bodies is disgusting and frightening.

Best wishes to you, sister. I hope you get the care and compassion you deserve. ❤️

This user vented about health insurers becoming increasingly difficult to deal with.

Hesitation-Marx − For a brief and shining moment in December of 2024, health insurance companies stopped f__king around as much.

Now they’re worse than ever.

These commenters suggested having the medical team appeal the denial and document why surgery is necessary

a-thousand-wishes − Is there potentially someone who may be able to advocate your case to insurance from your doctors/hospitals insurance office?

I had to get an advocate for a surgery of my own that was originally denied,

but the paperwork trail was strong enough for my advocate to get me greenlit to get surgery.

kkaavvbb − If at all possible! !! Reach out to your doctor or doctor’s office.

Please ask them to reach out to the insurance company and go over why the surgery is medically necessary

and not an elective surgery out of just want. It is very similar to fighting with insurances for women needing b__ast reduction due to back pain.

There is also small details that can help sort of “bypass” insurance things, like changing the diagnosis to something slightly different

(say, instead of like a diagnosis of “heavy menstrual bleeding” it becomes like “ovarian cancer biopsy” this is an example,

not a real change or diagnosis, it’s early I’m still sleepy).

I’m 37 and have had multiple medical issues that are usually considered “elective” through the past decade.

Including a partial hysterectomy at 26 (uterus & cervix removed).

Mine was due to internal damage done via C-section, which resulted in my bladder being sewn together to my uterus and vaginal wall.

That surgery was called “exploratory surgery” because the previous 2 years,

I was in & out of hospitals, labs, doctors, imaging centers, under anesthesia, etc every week. It was not billed as a hysterectomy.

I think it ended up being more “cheap” for the insurance to approve the surgery than proceed to let me rack up insurance claims.

Throughout the years, I have had a few doctors reach out to speak with insurance companies to explain the need for a surgery or test

and not that it is a want, it is a necessary procedure that is needed to improve life.

I have also had some doctors / insurance companies decide that the out of network doctor will be covered under my insurance for X amount

due to the vital need of that specialist and no other available in the area. I’m sure this varies by state, insurance providers, hospitals, doctors and all that s__t.

And of course, I can only speak on behalf of living in the USA (& NJ specifically). Hopefully you can get this resolved.

I didn’t have periods but I leaked urine out of my vagina. I hate how the medical industry (doctors & insurances) treat women.

We are seriously sub-human to a lot of them.

Should insurers be allowed to delay a scheduled surgery after a patient’s doctors have documented years of unsuccessful treatment, or should those decisions receive faster medical review?
