Woman Takes In Her Struggling Niece For Two Years, Then Threatens To Kick Her Out Over Household Chores

Living with relatives can be a lifesaver when circumstances become difficult, especially for teenagers who need stability and support. But sharing a home also means sharing responsibilities, and disagreements over household chores are hardly unusual.

While some young adults see cleaning and helping out as reasonable expectations, others may feel that certain demands are unfair. Occasionally, those differences can escalate into something much more serious.

That’s what happened to one 33-year-old woman who had been caring for her niece since the girl was 16. After helping her finish school and giving her a responsibility-free summer, the OP decided it was time to introduce some basic expectations. These included finding a job and completing a few hours of household tasks each week.

However, her niece strongly objected and suggested that the chores were connected to her ethnicity. The accusation shocked the OP and created tension with her boyfriend. Scroll down to see why she began reconsidering whether her niece could continue living with them.

'AITA- Kicking my 18 year old niece out after she said chores are r__ist slave labor?'

Helllooo, My (33) niece (18) has been living with me and my boyfriend (34) for almost two years.

My sister (37) was being kicked out of where they were living and my niece asked to stay with me.

My boyfriend and I went and got her with only a few days notice. Along with her cat and about 9 kittens.

Since then I had put in place basic rules of going to school and passing classes.

She was in the midst of about to be in court proceedings for truency which was dropped since I pulled her to a different school district right before they started.

She was also failing most classes and hardly had any credits as a junior in high school.

I put her in an alternative school where she had the opportunity to catch up on credits and redo assignments until they were passing.

There were some trying times during this period, but we got through it and she graduated this past June.

I let her have the summer as complete free time. No responsibility for anything.

Now that summer is over I gave her a chore list (at most 6 hours a week) as well as looking for a job.

Once she gets a job the chore list would go down as she would be responsible for minimal rent

and the rent would go up over 6 months and then another 6 months would be full rent at which point she will be 20.

Which for context is $633 a month after all the increases. It would start at $233, then $433.

This includes her room, all utilities, certain apps, pet care.

This is rent I have been covering since she has been here as the rooms are rented out by my boyfriend who owns the house.

This is much cheaper rent and covers more than anyplace else I've seen these days.

When she was presented with the plan she was resistant, much like she was with school.

We've been easing her into it staring one chore at time and consistently reminding her of them.

This is tedious as she is 18 and should be able to remember to take the trash out once a week, sweep and Swiffer once a week, do the dishes...

The last chore besides looking for a job is one hour of yard work a week which my boyfriend also does with her.

Keep in mind my boyfriend and I also have chore charts of our own.

It's been about a month since the chart was presented to her and my boyfriend put all of our charts on the fridge

and texted her explaining why it was on the fridge.

I had happened to take her grocery shopping soon after he put it up and she asked me why it was on the fridge

and she said it was just going to p__s her off every time she saw it. I told her it was so we can all keep track of what we...

She said she wasn't stupid and knew what needed to be done. I asked her why she kept needing reminders then because we can tell when things aren't done.

She didn't have an explanation. She did continue on saying that we were making her do yard work because she is Mexican.

For context my boyfriend and I are white. My niece's dad and my sister have other races in them that I do not.

She also went on to state that all the chores are slave labor since she's not being paid.

I explained to her that she is an adult now and that everything is still being paid for her and that

since she doesn't have a job yet this is the contribution that she is able to make to the household.

I also told her the things being asked of her a elementary and that I could have had her do chores the whole time she's lived with us,

but I let her school be her entire focus.

Since then she did continue to do the chores the next day, but my boyfriend wanted to speak with her regarding the comments she made.

She was dismissive with him, not responding back to messages. So when he caught her in person he asked if she still felt the same way

and she said it didn't matter since we were going to make her do the chores anyway. He asked her what she thought would be fair for her to contribute.

To which she didn't respond. Just sat on silence and asked if she could leave because she didn't want to waste a sunny day. He told her she could go.

That night we cut the wifi to her devices and I took the food I had bought a few days ago.

She still has some food and she also has access to money that she's made from helping out my boyfriend with his business a few hours a week.

She left us a note saying we are weirdos trying to make her mad.

My view is if she's going to say we are making her do slave labor chores she isn't entitled to my help anymore and I don't want her living here...

I've spent a lot of time, energy and money taking her in and I'm not wanting to continue to do

so if she's going to make doing the bare minimum another task for me to guide her attitude through.

So I'm getting the views of strangers even though my family, friends and therapist all already say I'm in the right lol

Few family conflicts are harder than realizing that the help someone desperately needed has become something they now expect without question. When support continues long after a crisis has passed, resentment can grow on both sides, especially when responsibility is finally introduced.

The OP took in her 18-year-old niece when her family situation became unstable, helped her change schools, supported her through academic problems, and provided a home where she could eventually graduate.

After giving her the summer without obligations, the OP introduced a gradual plan involving a small number of household chores, employment, and eventually modest rent. The niece strongly resisted and described the chores as “slave labor,” while also claiming she was being singled out because she is Mexican.

The OP then reached a breaking point: after nearly two years of providing extensive support, she no longer wanted to continue carrying the arrangement while being treated as though basic household contributions were oppression.

A different psychological perspective is that the niece may be struggling with the transition from being rescued to being responsible. For almost two years, adults around her have structured important parts of her life, from schooling to housing.

That support was necessary, but it may also have made the sudden expectation of independence feel like a loss of freedom. Her resistance does not make the accusation fair, but it may explain why relatively ordinary chores are provoking such a disproportionate response.

Psychologist Jeffrey Bernstein, Ph.D., has written about young adults who resist responsibility and how parents or caregivers can unintentionally reinforce avoidance by repeatedly rescuing them from consequences.

He emphasizes that healthy boundaries involve allowing young people to experience reasonable responsibilities rather than continually removing every source of discomfort.

That idea is relevant because the OP’s arrangement was not simply “do chores or leave.” She appears to have created a gradual transition: school first, then chores, then employment, then increasing rent over time.

The contribution requested was also modest compared with the overall support being provided. Household chores are generally part of communal living, particularly when the person receiving housing is an adult capable of contributing.

At the same time, the OP should separate two issues that have become tangled together. Her niece’s accusation that the chores are connected to her ethnicity should not simply be dismissed because the accusation is hurtful.

The most constructive response would be to examine whether expectations are genuinely consistent for everyone in the household. The fact that the OP and her boyfriend also have chore charts is relevant because it suggests the household has a general expectation of shared responsibility rather than a rule designed specifically for the niece.

The stronger concern is the decision to remove food and internet access immediately after the argument. If the intention is to establish that the niece is no longer welcome, that should be handled as a clear housing decision rather than through escalating punishments.

At 18, she is an adult, and depending on local tenancy laws and the circumstances of her residency, removing someone from a home may require proper notice and procedures.

The OP is not wrong for reaching the point where she no longer wants to provide indefinite housing. Helping a family member through a crisis does not create a lifetime obligation. Nor does providing free housing require the homeowner to accept contempt in return.

The healthiest boundary may therefore be less about winning the argument over whether chores constitute “slave labor” and more about deciding what the household arrangement will be going forward.

If the niece wants to remain, she needs to accept reasonable responsibilities and respectful conduct. If she does not, then the adults involved need to establish a lawful and realistic path toward independent housing.

Support can be generous without being permanent. Sometimes loving someone means helping them get back on their feet—and then expecting them to stand there themselves.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors said the niece needs a harsh reality check or should move out

LemonOld8150 − She needs to move out . She has a bad attitude no regard for the place you've given her .

Tell her to shape up or ship out She needs the school of hard knocks

witchymoon69 − She has a roof over her head , food in her belly , WiFi , her clothes are clean and she's being provided for .

Tell her to look for a room to rent to see how much it will cost her to move out .

Tell her she's got 30 days to get a job , figure out a budget and move out.

You are not her parents and do not want to support her and her attitude.

Such_Temporary_3125 − Oh girl, yup.

She's one of those ungrateful and entitled teens that unfortunately has to learn about responsibility and life the hard way.

Some kid don't, some kids understand gratitude, fairness, healthy contribution. Others have to learn it the hard way.

There's no teaching it to her other than letting her learn that lesson for herself. You've done what you could.

You've been fair and you've actually given her an amazing gift, security and stability, and she was able to graduate which is a huge accomplishment! !

But instead of showing appreciation she chose to be an entitled AH. I would kick her out for her attitude alone.

Nope. I'm not feeding the mouth that talks sh*t. NTA. Get her out.

ItsNotPatchy − She needs a kick in the reality a**.

These users said chores are basic adult life skills she needs to learn

Undercover_Blondie1 − So let's say in an alternative universe, she moves into her own place,

who does she thinks is going to clean up after her, make food, keep the property maintained etc. ?

Not everyone can afford to pay someone else to do it, do she needs to learn how to do it for herself. It's called life skills.

And also, if I was living somewhere rent free, those people would come home to a clean house, fully cooked meal,

hell I'll even make sure they have fresh bedding. It's called gratitude.

It would be different if you were legitimately making her do everything on her own for everyone, but a couple of chores with leniency, that's nothing.

Capable_Froyo4433 − I know how hard it is to get teenagers to do chores (my kids had one house chore a day each,

and getting them to do it was more work than doing it myself! ). Your niece needs a reality check.

Have a conversation about what she thinks her life will look like without you and your boyfriend. Look at rentals with her, and job ads.

Make her work out a budget based on what she is likely to start earning.

If she thinks she could house share to save money, ask her what she thinks housemates would do with someone

that doesn't share in communal chores. Tell her plainly, she is an adult now. You expect her to start acting like one.

If she thinks she can do better elsewhere, she is welcome to leave. You've done the best you can, and you're willing to ease her into adult responsibilities ,

if she will work with you. Otherwise, she knows where the door is. You don't have to put up with her attitude. NTA

Jonathan-Welford − She needs to learn to be an adult. She can pay, do chores and be a good housemate. Or, move out.

These commenters argued that free housing comes with responsibilities and gratitude

MLiOne − She has a choice, do chores and get benefits or get full time work and pay higher rent.

Race has nothing to do with it. Especially given you and your partner have your own lists of chores up for all to see.

Scenarioing − She needs to learn about the phrase. .. "Don't bite the hand that feeds you".

This user blamed learned entitlement and hoped losing support would become a wake-up call

Livid_Advertising_56 − Something tells me this is a LEARNED behavior. Sister sounds "responsible " also.

Apparently I'm a slave owner (to myself) since I have to do a lot of chores around my place.

Did you try the "this is a learning experience. You'll be doing all this when you have your own place. Here you have help at least" . Sounds VERY spoiled.

Not sure what the right answer is. But hopefully potentially losing her current living situation is a wakeup call

Should the aunt give her niece another chance with clearer boundaries, or has she already done enough? Would asking the teenager to move out teach responsibility or simply create another crisis?
