Woman Tells Pregnant Roommate Her Baby Name Choice Is “Ridiculously Stupid,” Sparks Major Argument

Choosing a baby name can be surprisingly emotional. What sounds beautiful to one person can feel confusing or even concerning to someone else, especially when pop culture and personal identity start mixing together. When opinions are asked for, honesty can be a slippery slope.

The OP found themselves in that exact situation after their pregnant roommate asked for feedback on a baby name inspired by a popular TV series. At first, the conversation seemed harmless enough. That changed when the roommate unveiled a creative spelling meant to make the name feel more unique.

What followed was an unfiltered reaction that quickly caused tension at home. Now, with hurt feelings and a very unconventional name on the table, the OP is wondering whether honesty crossed into cruelty. Read on to see how Reddit weighed in.

One woman questioned her honesty after reacting to her roommate’s baby name choice

Not the actual photo

AITA for telling my roommate that the name she chose for her baby is ‘ridiculously stupid’?

My roommate (24f) is a big Game of Thrones fan.

She’s pregnant with her first child right now.

She decided to name her baby, ‘Arya’.

When she asked my opinion of this name, I said I it was a good name with a good meaning

(Arya means noble in Sanskrit), but a lot of people have named their kids Arya, Khaleesi, Sansa

because of the popularity of GoT

and it might be a little too common, not that it is a bad thing.

The next day, which was yesterday, she said she’s found a way to name her baby ‘Arya’

and not have it be associated with other Aryas running around or the show.

How? She said she wanted to spell it as Aughreighyah.

I did a double take reading that word too,

but apparently people are supposed to read it as Augh-reigh-ya or Arya.

She asked me how I felt about it and I told her that,

frankly, Aughreighyah looks ridiculously stupid

and she should just go with Arya.

She got kinda upset and said that she and her partner came up with this only

because I told them that the name is very common.

I said that having a common name is better than having a confusing name..AITA?

There’s a familiar tension many people recognize: being asked for honesty, then watching that honesty land harder than expected. It’s the discomfort of caring about someone while also worrying about the long-term consequences of a choice they’re excited about.

In moments like this, what hurts most isn’t disagreement itself, but the feeling that good intentions and emotional sensitivity are suddenly on opposite sides.

In this situation, the OP wasn’t simply judging a baby name. They were responding to a deeper concern about responsibility. Names are one of the first permanent decisions parents make for their children, and the OP’s reaction was driven less by taste and more by protectiveness toward a future child who will have to live with that choice every day.

When the roommate proposed an extremely unconventional spelling, it triggered worries about social friction, mispronunciation, and unnecessary hardship. The bluntness of OP’s response likely came from frustration mixed with disbelief, a moment where empathy took a backseat to perceived common sense.

From another perspective, this conflict also reflects different emotional states. Pregnancy can heighten sensitivity, creativity, and a desire for uniqueness. For some expectant parents, naming a child becomes a way to assert identity, individuality, and emotional meaning.

The roommate may have felt proud of finding a “solution” that preserved the sound she loved while avoiding what she saw as overused names. When that idea was dismissed outright, it likely felt like a rejection of her creativity and autonomy, not just the spelling itself.

Psychology and sociology both show that names are not neutral. According to research summarized on Wikipedia’s “Effects of Names”, names can significantly influence how individuals are perceived in educational, professional, and social settings.

Studies have found that unusually spelled or highly unconventional names are more likely to be mispronounced, stigmatized, or judged negatively, which can affect confidence and social integration over time.

When this insight is applied to the story, the OP’s reaction becomes more understandable, even if the delivery was harsh. Their concern wasn’t about fandom or creativity, but about minimizing avoidable obstacles for a child who will eventually have no say in the matter.

At the same time, it also explains why the roommate felt hurt, naming a baby often feels deeply personal, tied to identity, hope, and imagination.

A more balanced takeaway isn’t that parents should avoid unique names, or that friends should always stay silent. It’s that honesty and empathy don’t have to cancel each other out.

When opinions are requested, especially on emotionally charged decisions, the challenge is offering truth in a way that considers both present feelings and future realities. The question worth reflecting on is this: when honesty risks causing pain, how do we decide where responsibility ends and compassion begins?

See what others had to share with OP:

These Redditors agreed honesty was fair since the opinion was requested

Beets_ByDwightShrute − Normally you’d be the a__hole but A) that’s a stupid name,

and B) she asked your opinion. NTA

marheena − NTA - it’s dumb and she asked your honest opinion.

Zero children have thanked their parents for dumb names.

Goody3333 − Aryah Aria Auria Auryah . .. Literally a billion ways to spell it,

and your friend comes up with that bs? I hope this is a troll.

This group worried the child would face lifelong spelling frustrations

iamskankhunt − NTA - that poor child will have to spell her name for everyone,

and correct people mis-pronouncing it.

Pale_Natural3655 − NTA. They are setting that kid up for a lifetime of hell.

Why do people feel the need to do this? Besides, the name is still the same,

so they haven't really solved the too common problem,

they just made the spelling look like a cat ran over a keyboard.

They leaned into humor, comparing the name to sounds or symbols

Vixen7-9 − Aughreighyah sounds like something I would sigh when i'm frustrated.

Or something Link would yell out when attacking. NTA.

pixierambling − May I suggest the alternate spelling "R-ya"

These commenters felt the critique could’ve been handled more gently

Outside-Question − NTA however your comment about the name being too common

because of GoT was probably not needed in the first place

SuperSixSumorai − This is obviously bait. No normal person names their kids that irl.

If, by the slim chance this is true, and they are serious,

then do everything in your power to stop it. Hard NTA

Most readers landed on the same conclusion: asking for opinions opens the door to uncomfortable truths. While creativity deserves respect, many felt that practicality matters when naming a child who has to live with it long after pop culture fades.

Was the roommate too blunt, or just realistically concerned? Could this have been framed with more empathy, or was honesty always going to sting?

Where do you draw the line between kindness and truth? Share your take below. This one clearly struck a nerve.
