The release month for Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” has been announced, confirming when the “Game of Thrones” spinoff will be returning to HBO.

Key Takeaways:

  • House Of The Dragon’s Season 2 release date
  • The cast returning of the ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoff
  • House of the Dragon Season 2 promises to be even bigger than season 1

Season 2 will pick up where Season 1 left off, focusing on the conflict between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower.

While it was hinted before that the “Game of Thrones” spinoff would return in the summer, now it’s confirmed: “House of the Dragon” Season 2 will premiere on HBO in June this year.

This news was shared by Warner Bros. Discovery exec J.B. Perrette during an interview. The show’s return is just under two years after Season 1 began in August 2022.

Even though the exact date hasn’t been announced yet, fans can look forward to a summer packed with dragons and battles.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Game of Thrones” companion book, “Fire & Blood,” “House of the Dragon” explores the Targaryen family’s rule in the fictional land of Westeros.

It’s set nearly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and around 100 years after the Targaryens brought together the Seven Kingdoms.

The cast returning for Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” includes Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Rhys Ifans, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, and Matthew Needham.

While Season 1 of the fantasy series had 10 episodes, Season 2 will feature only eight.

However, the focus shifts to the beginning of the Dance of the Dragons, a Targaryen civil war leading to dragons disappearing from Westeros for over a century.

Even though the season is shorter, the focus stays on the growing conflict, showcasing major battles between the Blacks and the Greens.

Season 1 of House of the Dragon concluded with the death of Rhaenyra’s son, Lucerys Velaryon, killed by Aemond Targaryen’s dragon Vhagar in a tragic incident.

However, Rhaenyra’s faction perceives this act as deliberate, igniting a civil war. Season 2 explores the impact of the conflict on Westeros and its effects on key characters from both sides.

Filming for “House of the Dragon” Season 2 started at Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios on April 11, 2023.

The production was not impacted by the Writers Guild of America strike, lasting from May 2 to Sept. 27, or the SAG-AFTRA strike, beginning on July 14, as scripts were finished before filming began.
