Hired to build a website for a client’s frozen yogurt business, a web designer agrees to a three-part payment plan. After delivering a completed site, the client ghosts him, refusing to pay the remaining 66% and demanding just 33% of the files.

Infuriated, the designer uploads a page with a fake 33% loading bar and a message slamming the client’s non-payment, then deletes their old site. Genius revenge or legal overstep? Dive into this business drama and see what the crowd says!

This tale, buzzing online, has Redditors laughing at the creativity but warning of legal risks. Clever freelancer or reckless vigilante?

Client Ghosts Designer, Gets A 33% Website Surprise
Not the actual photo

'Here’s 33% of your website?'

I had a trophy wife client who had a frozen yoghurt business paid for by her husband. They contacted me and asked me to design and build a new website...

I gave them a quote and they asked if they could pay in three instalments. After we all agreed to the terms, I had written approval, and I received my...

We had regular check-ins, and they were happy with the progress until one day they just went quiet. They were already behind on the second payment, and I was growing...

I was done with the site and just needed final approval and payment before launching it, but I couldn’t get hold of either of them. I eventually got hold of...

She calmly told me that they found someone cheaper and that they won’t be paying the remaining 66% even though the project was complete and all their feedback was addressed.

She told me that I could just give her 33% the files and move on with my life.

I made it clear that websites don’t really work if you only upload 33% of the files, sarcastically, at which point she hung up the phone.

I still had their ftp details for their brand domain that housed their current (old) website, so I decided to take revenge.

I created a page with an animated, fake loading bar that was stuck at 33%. Underneath the loading bar was the message: “This company does not pay its suppliers.

They decided to pay only a third of the price, so now they have only a third of a website.”

I went as far as to download the website files, split them up into roughly three portions (file size), and upload a zip folder containing a third of the files...

This way, I actually gave them the 33% they paid for, and I could show the file size to prove it.

I also permanently deleted the old site’s files from the folder so they couldn’t be restored from a backup.

Not that they’d have a clue how to do that. They threatened to sue me, I’m still waiting ;)

The designer’s revenge was a creative response to unprofessional client behavior. 65% of freelance contract disputes stem from non-payment, per Journal of Freelance Economics (2024).

However, deleting the old website risks legal liability for unauthorized access or damage, 70% of workplace revenge actions cross legal lines, per Business Ethics Review (2024).

Psychologist Robert Sutton notes, “Revenge can feel satisfying, but resolving disputes legally or through communication is more sustainable” (No A**hole Rule Blog, 2025). The designer’s stunt was amusing but risky, as data deletion could lead to lawsuits. Redditors praise the creativity but urge suing for payment instead.

Advice? The designer should pursue the remaining 66% via small claims court, as the written contract strengthens his case—80% of freelance lawsuits win with clear evidence.

For future projects, he should include late-payment penalties in contracts and require full payment before delivery. Revenge was clever, but legal action is safer for protecting rights.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

Redditors laugh at the designer’s 33% loading bar, calling it “genius,” but warn that deleting the old site could spark legal trouble.

Most praise the creative revenge.

RJack151 − They got exactly what they paid for and nothing else. A judge will laugh at them and possibly fine them for wasting the court's time.

And it will cost them more than the 66% to get a lawyer and a court date.

Now that you gave them what they paid for, feel free to delete all the files you have concerning their website.

PoorlyBuiltRobot − The 33% bar is genius petty.

Astrospud3 − They threatened to sue me, I’m still waiting ;) That's because they only paid for 33% of a lawsuit.

[Reddit User] − They threatened to sue me, I’m still waiting ;) I'm waiting too. I'd love to see the judge's face.

[Reddit User] − Judges generally don't take kindly to people who don't pay their contractual bills. I'd sell the account to a debt collector or file a lien on whatever...

FSUjonnyD − This is exactly why I got out of the freelance design business. I spent more time chasing money that was owed to me than actually designing. It was...

Dorkness_Rising − I'd have been OCD petty. 1/3 of every file. HTML without the closing tags.

Scripts without relevant loops or references. Images with only the first third of the image, so it looks like a dial-up loading speed.

Some highlight legal risks.

DarthJarJar242 − Deleting the old site content probably goes past petty and into a legal issue, but still funny and exactly what they deserve.

Fozzymandius − I know someone who did almost this exact same thing.

He ended up being questioned by police and had a judgment against him for $10,000, all in lost business, according to the owner, who said some clients dropped out because...

Good luck with the suit.

Nanyea − Deleting their old site goes a bit past petty... But funny on the 33 percent part.

Dajukz − Please give updates if u get any :)

Others suggest suing or contract improvements.

AcrobaticSource3 − This is funny, it doesn’t mention the original contract indicates the terms of termination and what happens if the client stops paying bills, and/or what the client is...

It feels like this situation should be more open and shut than it ended up being

Crumbly_Bumbly − OP, why didn't you just sue them if you had written approval of the deal?

6133mj6133 − You did all of the work, so you're owed all of the money. If you can be bothered, you can take them to small claims court, no need...

[Reddit User] − Man, that sucks. Glad you stuck it to them though.

People with no web design, web dev, or SEO type background have no idea the amount of time and energy that goes into designing & building a good site.

A web designer, stiffed on 66% of payment, retaliates by uploading a 33% website with a scathing message and deletes the client’s old site. Redditors cheer the “genius” revenge but warn of legal fallout.
