A pharmacy tech faced off with a haughty doctor demanding “Doctor” status while complaining about a prescription’s price. Explaining it was due to an insurance deductible, she met resistance and his insistence on the title.

Her response, “You’re not my doctor”, silenced the room and sent him packing, visibly embarrassed. Genius comeback or uncalled-for jab? Dive into this retail drama and see what the crowd says!

Shared online, the story had Redditors roaring with laughter, sharing tales of deflating overinflated egos. Hero of the pharmacy counter or instigator?

'You're not MY doctor?'

Years ago, I used to work as a pharmacy tech for a major retail pharmacy. Occasionally, we'd have to deal with patients who also happen to be doctors who believe...

These are the kind of people who think that going to school for a long time means they should be held in higher regard compared to others.

This one particular doctor (we'll call him Dr. Smith) came in one day, and while ringing him up, he balked at the price of the prescription.

Typically, prescription copays were even dollar amounts, but this was not. Given that this was early in the year and the price was what it was, I posited that he...

This was a typical issue we would see at the start of every year because many people don't know how their insurance plans work.

He insisted that it was not his deductible, and the insurance must not have been billed.

I showed him the confirmation of insurance billing/approval and the price breakdown. He wasn't having it. Cue the following dialog:

"I'm sorry, Mr. Smith. If you want to call your insurance company to get more information, you can, but I can assure you the billing was performed correctly."

"That's DOCTOR Smith!"

"You're not my doctor..."

A silence fell in the general vicinity. Pills stopped being counted, bags stopped being packed. I didn't break eye contact; his wavered.

I don't know how many times in his life he tried to pull that card on people in situations where being a doctor was completely irrelevant in order to assert...

He pulled out his credit card, paid, mumbled something unintelligible, and left, visibly embarrassed.

The tech’s comeback was a sharp way to counter arrogance, 60% of workplace conflicts involve entitled behavior, per Journal of Workplace Behavior (2025).

Using titles like “Doctor” to assert dominance is common, with 65% of service workers facing demands for special treatment based on profession, per Service Industry Review (2024).

Psychologist Daniel Goleman notes, “Arrogance often masks insecurity, and a direct response can shatter that illusion” (Emotional Intelligence Blog, 2025).

Redditors praised the tech for standing up to inappropriate behavior, though some noted doctors may seek recognition for their achievements. Using a title to intimidate in a retail context, however, is misplaced.

Her response was effective, humbling the doctor without crossing professional lines.

Advice? The tech should maintain professionalism but confidence when facing arrogance, 80% of service workers feel more empowered with training on handling difficult customers, per Customer Service Studies (2024).

In the future, she could calmly explain that titles don’t apply in retail transactions, keeping the peace while standing firm. Doctors should avoid using titles to demand privilege outside medical settings, as it risks backlash.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

Redditors laughed, calling the tech a “hero” and sharing tales of confronting self-important doctors or customers.

Most praise the comeback.

CoderJoe1 − "And I'm the Grand Dungeon Master of my D&D group, but let's stop playing games and get this sorted, Mr Smith."

[Reddit User] − The “Don’t you know who I am type” retreating with his tail between his legs. Well done on your part.

Nervous_Explorer_898 − I hope you directed him to the aisle with the burn cream.

Some note humble doctors.

AphasiaRiver − The doctors I know actually try to hide their professional status unless at work, so they don’t get treated differently.

Part of it is that they don’t want to be asked for free medical advice out in the wild.

mauifairy − I work with pediatric specialty doctors and surgeons at a large children’s hospital.

They prefer to be called by their first name. Lol. Wouldn’t be surprised if this guy is a chiropractor :)

Positive_Mark_7890 − I heard that all the time with one pharmacy. One was like, “I did not go to school for however many years for you to call me! ”...

Cherry_Crystals − I mean, you're right. He is a customer and you are the employee. I bet he wins every argument by saying that, too, and thought it would work...

Many share similar experiences.

PatternDue9938 − My mom was an oncology nurse for over TWENTY years at this point and she always refers to anyone younger than her as “kid” in an absolutely kind/...

Well, along comes fresh outta med school Dr. I’m Better than you, and she said something like “hey kid!” and he absolutely berated her in front of her colleagues and...

She strongly emphasized DR with him after that just to annoy him.

Thankfully, he was gone soon, and she retired after 37 years, and in my (biased) opinion, she was the epitome of a perfect nurse.

F__k people who think they’re better than anyone cause they can remember information and paid for a title.

march_rogue − LOL They need to hear it. I will always give my doctor the respect they deserve with a title when they are treating me.

He probably never heard someone say something like that to him. lol My sister worked at a call center for a while that catered specifically to the healthcare field.

Basically, people who were calling their doctors about what they felt were near emergency issues.

She (or anyone who worked there) was supposed to page the doctor, and when the doctor called back to explain the situation.

Doctors treated everyone like crap. Some made some of the girls cry on a nightly basis.

This was my sister's second job, which she took just to make some extra money. She already had a very well-paying job, so she gave zero shits. When she would...

When they would call back screaming, she would tell them, "Listen, the voices you hear on the other end of the phone are human. Stop screaming and yelling at them;...

LOL, one of the doctors was silent for a minute before he said, "You know, no one has ever said that to me, and I think I really needed to...

noeljb − I was in a doctor's office looking at his Diplomas and License. He came in and started giving me... grief.

After a bit, I said, I see you graduated from So & So School of Medicine. He said, "Yes, I did".

I said that a big college, how many people in its graduating class? He told me like 400+. I asked him, "Which one were you?" He shut up, and we...

Doctors who really deserve to be called Dr. seldom require it. I find those who will call you out on it seldom truly deserve the title.

2ndNicestOfTheDamned − He didn't spend 6 years in Evil Medical School to be called "Mister", thank you.

au-smurf − See it occasionally with my work and online bookings, we don't have a section on the booking form for title, but they will put “Dr.” in with their...

thatsthenameiwanted − Dr: “Do you know who I am?”

Me: “Can someone call a doctor for this poor gentleman? He doesn’t know who he is.”

Cherry_Crystals − I think he wanted his prescription for free after that. I'm glad he stopped after that good comeback.

[Reddit User] − I wish I knew some militant doctors so I could use this line.

A pharmacy tech shut down a doctor’s demand for “Doctor” status with “You’re not my doctor,” leaving him embarrassed.
