Man Demands Express Shipping During Covid, Clerk Delays Order, Cancels His Account, And Enjoys The Silence

When service levels tank because two people are doing the job of ten, reasonable explanations fall flat for some customers and patience dies fast.

That’s what happened at one online retailer during the COVID staffing storm: orders queued, couriers jammed, and one rural customer insisted his paid express order deserved royal treatment. He threatened to boycott the shop if his parcel wasn’t shipped that day.

The clerk listened, then treated the promise like a business requirement. What followed was textbook petty justice: cancellation, refunds, and a discreet ban that guaranteed the customer’s vow would be honored. Want the exact note the clerk left with that refund? Keep scrolling!

One exhausted retail worker during the Covid chaos of early 2022 decided to take a stand after one customer’s condescending outburst

'Forcing someone to live up to their threatening promise?'

It was January 2022. A new wave of Covid hit, and it devastated the workforce in the major cities here.

On average, about half the workforce for any industry was home sick for about a week at the same time.

Shelves in supermarkets weren't stocked because there weren't enough workers to keep them full. The number of bus routes were cut in half. The list goes on.

At my retail store, all but two of us were sick. With two people on staff, we couldn't get to everything, so we had to decide what parts of the...

Most of our revenue is from online sales, so we decided to close the store and focus on dispatching online orders. We still had to answer phone calls and emails...

This was only happening in the major cities of course, more rural locations dodged the major disruptions.

One day, I got a call from a customer. He placed an online order the day prior, paid for express post, but noticed it hadn't been sent.

He called, asked why it hadn't been sent. I looked on his account, and saw he lived in a rural town hours away. This was the conversation:

Cuntstomer: Hi I placed an order yesterday with express post, why hasn't it been sent yet?

Me: very sorry, there's only two of us on staff because of Covid and we are doing the best we can to keep up with the online orders.. Cuntstomer: but...

Me: yes, and as I explained, there's only two of us on staff, we've had to close the store, and there's a lot of orders to pack and we pack...

Cuntstomer: well, your best isn't good enough. I paid for express, it should have been sent out by now. My best wasn't good enough?

What an absolute piece of s__t. At this point, I had dealt with enough stress, so I let him have it.

Me: paying for express doesn't mean we pack the order faster, it means that once the courier has it, they deliver it to you faster.

That extra money you spent doesn't go to me or this company, it goes to the courier. There are orders older than yours, they have priority, they have waited longer...

Cuntstomer: I don't care, you need to ship it today. Me: I can't promise that. Do you have any idea what Covid has done to the workforce here?

Cuntstomer: no and I don't care. If you don't ship my order today, I promise I'll never shop with you again. I genuinely laughed out loud at that.

Me: I literally could not care less, it's no skin off my nose. At that point, I hung up. For the entrée of my revenge, I purposely skipped his order...

It got sent the next day. The main course though, that was tasty. I blocked his account so he couldn't shop with us again.

He promised he wouldn't, so I wanted to make sure he didn't break his promise. He tried to though. He made another account.

I recognised the name, and confirmed it was him through the shipping address. I cancelled the order and processed the refund.

For revenge's dessert, I did something truly petty. When you process a refund, you reverse the payment made by the debit card.

You can put a note in it when you do so, so the customer knows why that money is reappearing in their bank. The note I put was "to help...

This story may read like a petty triumph, but it actually taps into a real psychological phenomenon: the empathy gap in customer behavior.

According to Psychology Today, people are more likely to dehumanize service workers when they feel stressed, perceiving them as “functional tools” rather than people with emotions.

Dr. Susan Fiske, a social psychologist at Princeton University, describes this as “mechanistic dehumanization.”

It occurs when customers interact with workers they see as faceless representatives of a company rather than individuals. During COVID-19, when anxiety, shortages, and delays were universal, this mindset intensified.

A 2022 report by the Harvard Business Review found that retail workers experienced a 78% rise in verbal abuse during the pandemic.

The employee’s response, while humorous, was also an act of reclaiming control. Retail workers often feel powerless when confronted by entitled customers.

By blocking the man’s account and refunding his purchase with the note “to help you keep your promise,” the employee flipped that power dynamic, transforming passive frustration into self-advocacy.

Workplace psychologist Dr. Adam Grant notes that small acts of defiance can actually protect mental health in emotionally draining jobs. “Setting boundaries, even when it looks petty, is often a form of self-preservation,” he writes.

The humor adds an extra layer: laughter, especially shared through online communities, helps workers collectively process the trauma of emotional labor.

So while this Redditor’s move might seem like overkill, it’s a window into a bigger issue, how society undervalues emotional resilience in service roles.

A moment of cheeky revenge might just be the emotional reset workers need to survive another day behind the counter.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

Redditors called the revenge “17 out of 10 petty perfection”

Cfwydirk − Customer: Do you know who I am? OP: I will not forget you. LOL!

GrumpyCatStevens − On a scale of 1 to 10, this rates a 17 for vengefulness.

[Reddit User] − This was so glorious to read. I work in retail, and have lost count of the number times I heard the phrase

"I will never shop with you again!". Please, do me a favour so I never have to deal with you again! Well executed, OP!

MorrisThe3rd − Don't threaten me with a good time 🎉

FeralBottleofMtDew − Lol...I got to the third or fourth "cuntstomer" before I noticed the spelling. Love it so much.

[Reddit User] − "I'll never shop with you again! " "Thank you! Have a great day! " (I've had the pleasure to say that more than once! )

SalisburyWitch − You should have added, “banned from online ordering”. Pretty bad to be banned from an online store.

One commenter summed it up perfectly

Coygon − I have often said that anyone who declares they "will never shop here again" should be instantly banned.

If they were serious they won't care, and if they weren't it'll teach them the consequences of stupid ultimatums.

Some also shared their similar experiences

MuffinMan12347 − Worked in a call centre and had a guy call to be taken off the mailing list. But he was just being the biggest cunt of all cunts...

After taking him off the list I asked if there was anything else I can help him with. His response “you haven’t helped me at all you d__khead” So I...

8aL0Tb8bzBIGnow − That was frrrrrrreakin' awesome! !! Lorena Bobbitt is my #1 idol, you are #2!! I worked in retail and had to take customer abuse, along with management abuse,...

Was told numerous times and even had it shouted in my face that people wouldn't return to the store ever again. ..and then they'd be back within days.

One lady yelled at me twice for not being able to make an out of stock product magically appear. The second time she did it I stood up for myself.

Of course management only cared about making the customer happy. Since they're always right and I was wrong for not wanting to be disrespected and spoke up, I got fired.

A blessing for me, no longer at that toxic place dealing with toxic people! ! Some cuntstomers (lol good word) suck!

So what do you think? Was this worker’s move justified, or did they cross the line from professional to petty? And should businesses start honoring those “I’ll never shop here again” threats a little more literally? Drop your take below, retail veterans, we know you’ve got stories.
