Woman Ruins FIL’s Shirt After He Assumes Ironing Is Her Job Because She’s A Woman

Gender roles have a way of sneaking into the most ordinary moments. A simple favor, a casual command and suddenly the air thickens with unspoken expectations.

That’s what happened to one woman as she rushed to get ready for her engagement party, juggling curling irons and mascara wands when her future father-in-law made a request that felt straight out of another century. Her response was subtle but powerful enough to make thousands online cheer in delight.

A woman, rushed during engagement party prep, was handed her sexist FIL’s shirt to iron, so she melted its logo on high heat

'Whilst getting ready for my engagement party, FIL handed me his shirt and told me to iron it for him (because I'm a woman). I ruined it?'

My father in law had travelled down to attend mine and my fiancé's engagement party, he was getting ready and staying at my house.

I had my hair half curled and my makeup half done, with not much time left.

I was visibly rushing. He handed me his shirt and said "iron this for me."

Apparently, my vagina gave me the necessary qualifications for being the Chief Ironer.

I took it off him with a smile and ironed the vinyl (I think?) print on the highest setting and ruined his shirt.

Melted the logo and got scorch marks on the shirt. Oops. "Sorry FIL, I don't know why you thought I'd be good at ironing but I'm terrible at it! I...

He had to wear an ill-fitting replacement from my fiancé, he ironed that one himself.

EDIT: I'm getting a lot of hate for this, so I wanted to clear up some common misconceptions.

My FIL is a terrible, sexist man that abused my MIL until she fled with her then-young children to a women's refuge center.

There is absolutely no question that he was demanding I iron his shirt because I am a woman and "that is what women do".

No, I didn't feel like politely declining. No, it's not my responsibility to teach him how to be less sexist.

This anecdote isn’t just about an ironing mishap; it reflects gender expectations and family dynamics that remain surprisingly persistent.

Dr. Stephanie Sarkis, a clinical psychologist, notes that “traditional gender roles often manifest in subtle, everyday requests, like domestic chores. Even well-educated adults may unconsciously expect women to assume these roles.”

Research from Pew Research Center shows that in 2023, 42% of women in dual-income households still report doing more than half of domestic tasks, despite both partners working full-time. It’s easy to see how a seemingly trivial request, like ironing a shirt, becomes a microcosm of broader inequality.

In this case, the bride’s response can be framed as strategic incompetence, a psychological tactic where individuals perform a task intentionally poorly to push back against an unfair or unreasonable request.

According to VeryWell Mind, strategic incompetence can serve as a harmless, non-confrontational way to challenge unfair power dynamics, especially when the requester is unlikely to listen to verbal objections.

For those navigating family events, the takeaway is clear: boundaries matter, and humor or creative “errors” can communicate resistance effectively. While the bride could have refused outright, the subtle sabotage, vinyl melted and scorch marks included, highlighted the absurdity of gendered assumptions without initiating a direct confrontation.

Check out how the community responded:

One Reddit user shared a coworker’s dry-cleaning complaints, undone by a wife who refused to iron

Playful_Donut2336 − I worked with a guy who always complained that he had to take his shirts to the dry cleaners to be ironed

because his mother didn't do it well enough. He was appalled when I suggested he do it himself!

Funny thing...he married a woman who insisted he do his share of the housework. I suspect ironing his own shirts was part of it!

Another recounted a husband teaching his wife to iron, only to do it himself forever

digitydigitydoo − I knew a guy who told the story about how shortly after he married, he explained to his wife that she was not ironing his shirts correctly.

He then showed her precisely how a shirt was to be properly ironed and after that, all of his shirts were done correctly.

Because she never ironed any of his shirts again.

And this commenter laughed at their wife shutting down a sexist dad

111111911111 − That's awesome! My dad pulled some of that s__t on my wife after we were married, but always when I wasn't around or in the room.

She has no issues lighting him up when he hauls out the sexist comments. I think it's hilarious!

The last time he tried it, he asks me to take some of his laundry home and ask her to wash it.

I told him to come along and ask her himself. He turned red and mumbled something, and that was the end of that .

My wife and I definitely split chores, but its based on what we enjoy or don't mind doing, not a male/female job split.

This folk shared an ex-FIL’s diaper demand post-C-section

ProudMaOfaSlut − My (former) FIL dashed across the room when I asked my (ex) husband to change our newborn's diaper.

"No, you need to teach her that's her job". I had had a C-section & could barely move. I learned so much those first few months.

This group cheered the strategic incompetence

ggapsfface − This is the first instance of strategic incompetence I've seen that I can get fully behind! Well done.

dwells2301 − Nice job. Back in the dark ages when bell bottoms were in style, my older brother ordered me to iron his pants.

Instead of a crease down the front of the leg, I starched them the other way. He never asked me to iron for him again.

And this couple admired the quick thinking

LadyToker − I applaud you for that quick thinking. I’ve been hurled into doing things for my in laws but never know what to say quick enough

helena_handbasketyyc − Amazing. I don’t own an iron, so imagine his shock when I ran the shirt under the tap and tossed it in the dryer.

These users enjoy ironing, and the latter fiancé rebuffed a sewing request

NewestMexican_ABQ − Dude here. I actually like ironing. I find it relaxing. Set up in front of the TV, work through my garments one by one, break to sip my...

norwegianmouse − An old roomate once asked my fiance to sew a button for him. She handed him a sewing kit and told him to google it. So proud.

Do you think her fiery solution was fair, or should she have confronted him directly instead? Would you have done the same in her shoes or rather, with her iron? Let’s hear your take in the comments.
