Moving Company Finished In 20 Minutes But Charged For Two Hours, She Found The Perfect Payback

There’s nothing worse than feeling like you’ve been scammed by hidden fees, especially when you’ve been polite, organized, and on time. One mover’s client found out the hard way that a “two-hour minimum” meant paying double for a job that barely lasted twenty minutes.

Rather than explode with anger, the customer took a clever and oddly wholesome approach to reclaiming the value of those paid hours. What could’ve been an ugly confrontation turned into a moment of quiet satisfaction, and even the movers ended up smiling.

Customer, hit with an undisclosed 2-hour minimum after a 20-minute move, forces movers to take a full paid break

'Charge me for two hours? I’ll take the two hours?'

This just happened today, so I’m still worked up over it.

I booked a moving company to move 3 items; two medium sized dressers and one foam mattress.

The move was 2k in distance and I requested two movers and a big truck.

Messaging back and fourth with the owner he offered me a “spot for 12-1pm” which I accepted.

The movers finished moving everything out of my place and into their truck after just 20 minutes.

They then inform me that there is a minimum 2-hour charge. WHAT?

They told me to call the owner who simply said if I wanted my things moved to my new place, I had to pay for two hours.

I was livid, my price just doubled and I still only got an hour of labour.

My malicious compliance? Okay, Mr. Owner Man, if you want to charge me for two hours, then I get two hours of their time.

I then got the movers (two university students) to sit down in the shade and enjoy an hour break. :)

Moving companies often use minimum-hour billing policies to cover their base operating costs, but those policies must be clearly stated in advance.

Consumer law guidance confirms that customers must be informed of all service conditions, including hourly minimums, before work begins.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) warns movers that failure to disclose such terms can count as a deceptive business practice.

In this story, the customer hired movers for a short-distance job, only 2 km, with two dressers and a mattress, expecting a one-hour move. The movers finished loading in 20 minutes, then announced there was a two-hour minimum charge.

The owner insisted the client pay for the full two hours before completing the job. Instead of arguing, the customer complied literally: they paid and had the workers sit and rest for the remaining paid hour.

Many U.S. and Canadian moving companies use this two-hour minimum model because travel time, truck fuel, and worker scheduling make short jobs unprofitable.

However, the key ethical issue is disclosure. If the minimum wasn’t communicated in writing or verbally beforehand, the company could be seen as engaging in bait-and-switch tactics, promising one rate or time window and then demanding a higher payment at delivery.

The Better Business Bureau similarly warns consumers to always request written quotes and confirm hourly minimums before booking.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These Redditors praised OP for treating the movers kindly and turning frustration into a wholesome outcome

Gertrudethecurious − So glad you didn't take it out on those poor students. They probably only got minimum wage. Good for you!

Nesrynn − I so expected this to turn out with the poor movers having to move useless things.

I’m so glad it turned out to be wholesome. That was aggressively wholesome tho

FarKorre − Okay I work at a moving company currently and the 2 hr minimum practice is fairly common.

I understand your frustration however and acknowledge that it should be shorter (a 1 hr min would be more fair).

And I just want to say thank you for handling this so well and not taking it out on the workers.

We are just there to do our jobs, we aren't in charge of rates

and it's so often that people take out their anger about the bill on us,

doing things like adding more rooms to move just to spite us,

and having us rearrange things dozens of times only to have it moved an inch or two from the original position.

So again thank you for being kind to those of us just doing our job

This user shared a similar malicious compliance story about an overcharged trade show vacuuming

dubloe7 − My favorite version of this was at a trade show where you rent out booths.

When the guy got the booth he rented the carpet was absolutely filthy.

He went to try and find a vacuum he could borrow, and was told that it was union rules

that only the union members could use a vacuum in the booths, not the clients.

So he says fine and asks how much, and of course the price was something ridiculous per hour.

The vacuumer was done after five minutes and went to leave,

but the person renting the booth made him stay for the entire hour, vacuuming.

These commenters pointed out the company’s lack of transparency, saying the undisclosed 2-hour minimum could be illegal or unenforceable

MjrJWPowell − Them not telling you that there was a 2 hr minimum is illegal, I think.

I worked at a pool company with a large service department.

The service coordinators always told the customers there was a 1.5 hr minimum on all service calls.

kevin_k − Did you sign something acknowledging the 2-hr minimum?

Because if he offered you a "spot for 12-1PM", you won't be surprised when I tell you that's only one hour.

If he didn't tell you about a minimum, you weren't obligated to pay.

This group explained that two-hour minimums are standard in moving services, though still unfair without clear notice

cocosailing − Moving is such a sketchy business.

couturefan904 − Are you sure you weren't charged two man hours, since you requested 2 movers?

You did get 2 hours of labour, one from each of them.

That's usually how moving companies, cleaning companies & etc are.

OctarineRacingStripe − These companies often work at a loss for the first hour,

especially if it means they can't take on a long job that day as well.

They might fit 2 3-hour jobs in a day, but only 3 1-hour jobs, after travel time etc.

A hell of a lot of companies charge a minimum for this reason.

Think of it less as per-hour and more as a standard charge that goes up after the first 2 hours.

But yeah, they're dicks for not making that clear up-front.

This commenter compared practices abroad, noting Singapore’s upfront inspections and fixed, honest quotes

saiyanjesus − Is this in the US? In Singapore, moving companies come to your house to do

an inspection before moving before giving you a quote. The quote is fairly straightforward

and will cover hours, extras for stairs, number of vehicles, movers and hours it would take.

The quote they give you is the final amount unless you suddenly spring stuff on them at the last minute.

The internet loved this story not just for its pettiness, but for its humanity. Instead of revenge, it was respect, directed at the right people. The movers left with smiles, the customer left with satisfaction, and the company owner? Probably fuming.

Sometimes the best way to fight unfairness isn’t to shout or sue. It’s to sit in the shade, breathe deeply, and make the system work for you.
