Wife’s Petty Toilet Paper Revenge Becomes A Relationship Masterclass

Living with a partner means learning to share everything, from dreams and goals to… toilet paper rolls.

One Redditor shared how her otherwise wonderful husband had a strangely persistent bad habit: never replacing the empty roll.

Even after gentle reminders, he’d leave the cardboard tube hanging and set the fresh roll on the counter like a peace offering.

After patience ran out, she decided to take the petty route.

'Don’t want to replace the toilet paper when it’s empty? Ok?'

My spouse, Jack, is a wonderful person and I love him dearly buuuuttttt he can be a little one-track-minded sometimes.

We moved a few months ago, and due to the bathroom setup, the extra toilet paper rolls have to be a few feet away from the toilet.

In our previous house, the toilet was right next to a cabinet so it was easy to replace the roll.

Since moving, Jack often leaves an empty toilet paper roll on the holder and places the new roll on a surface by the toilet.

Sometimes he’ll use the last of a roll and not even get a new one out for the next user. Super inconsiderate, but no one is without faults, right?

I brought it up in casual conversation a few times, but he keeps doing it.

Ok. So. I told Jack the issue and allowed a few times of reminding so that he could form the habit, but he isn’t even trying. Time to get petty!

Jack really, really prefers that the toilet paper be “up and over” rather than “under and behind.”

Of course, now that I replace it after he should have, I purposely do it the way I know he doesn’t like. Jack always fixes it the next time he...

One day, he said, "You know, the toilet paper is supposed to go 'up and over.'"

I told him that I did know he really prefers it that way, and if he replaced it himself, then he wouldn’t have to worry about it.

The look of “wait a minute... hey!!” was wonderful. I will keep doing this until I no longer need to.

Domestic harmony is often built, or bruised, by the tiniest habits. Forget the grand gestures; in many relationships, it’s the empty toilet paper roll that starts a quiet war.

What looks like playful revenge in this story actually highlights a classic behavioral loop couples fall into: one partner takes on invisible labor while the other unintentionally leans on that dependability. Over time, small acts of neglect can feel like symbols of disregard, even when the intention isn’t malicious.

Psychologist Dr. John Gottman, a leading researcher on marital stability, has noted that “the small moments of everyday life are really the building blocks of a relationship.”

His studies show that consistent minor frustrations, like not refilling the toilet paper, often carry emotional weight because they signal a lack of attentiveness or reciprocity.

The partner who feels ignored (in this case, the storyteller) may respond with subtle retaliation rather than confrontation, a form of what therapists call passive problem-solving. It’s amusing, yes, but it’s also a sign of unmet emotional needs disguised as humor.

Interestingly, everyday domestic disputes often mirror larger communication gaps.

A 2022 YouGov survey found that nearly 37% of couples admit to arguing over household chores weekly, yet few actually discuss how those chores make them feel. The “up and over” versus “under and behind” debate, then, isn’t about paper, it’s about participation and recognition.

Constructive approaches usually work better than petty justice. Relationship experts recommend habit pairing: linking a simple action (like replacing the roll) with an existing routine to reinforce consistency.

For instance, keeping a basket of refills closer to the toilet can remove friction points. More importantly, humor can be kept as a bonding tool rather than a weapon, turning irritation into teamwork.

Here are the comments of Reddit users:

These users championed the “petty but fair” approach.

dellaevaine − I'd bring my own TP and leave him stranded without it, but I'm petty as all hell.

kaper2yahoocom − I would have moved the extra rolls totally out of reach, like a hall closet!

phathomthis − That's a very evil way of getting your point across, purposely putting the toilet paper on the wrong way so he has to fix it and put it...

And no, it's not a preference. There's a simple right and wrong, with one exception: you have cats that go in your bathroom.

In which case, your world is chaos already, and you're used to things not being normal.

Their stories became instant classics.

whoframedrogerreddit − Tifu: I decided to see how long it would take 2 grown men with jobs to buy toilet paper for the main bathroom.

It took them a week of using paper towels, and I caved and bought some because my bathroom was out.

Now, they're whining and complaining that the main bathroom is clogged.

They both played the 6-year-olds game of "not me" when confronted about not buying TP and using paper towels.

It's petty revenge and a f__k up on my part. I will not deny my amusement when they cry about having to s__t outside in a bucket because I lock...

BJntheRV − Ya know it's supposed to go up and over... Really? Well, did you know the toilet paper is supposed to go on the roller and not the counter?

This group praised OP’s cleverness but warned of escalation.

karmageddon14 − I'm unfortunately like Jack in the way I want the roll oriented. I think you will find that your method is going to be very effective in altering...

Unless... he is more petty than you and finds something to really get under your skin.

In that case, prepare to nuke the site from orbit and find a lawyer. Not necessarily in that order.

midAgemidLife − My husband and I disagree on TP orientation, so the rule is “whoever replaces it decides how it goes”. Now it’s a race to replace the roll!

tolearnandunderstand − This is such a perfect solution 😂

Outrageous_Try − Harmless but effective, I love it.

These long-suffering veterans of the toilet paper wars shared their own failed attempts to reform loved ones.

beldarin − So, a while back, I was upstairs, and I called the kids (11 & 19). "Hey kids, omg quick! Come look at this, omg quick quick!"

They come running, I'm in the bathroom, super excited, "OMG, look at this, it's so crazy!"

Kids: "What?!?!?!" They are psyched. What could it be?

Me: "Check this out!!!!!! This roll, it actually FITS, straight onto this little holder here, omg, it's like it was made for it!"

Groans all round, and it was very satisfying to have pulled them both in, but alas, it didn't have much effect.

Have also tried writing the date on the empty roll and then leaving it for weeks. Nope.

My last attempt was to instill some guilt about the back of the toilet is the ONE place I cannot comfortably reach with my messed-up rotator cuff.

Nope. Still happens. I'm trying to just let it go; I'm clearly the only one bothered, so I'll just do it myself. It's fine.

piehore − Good luck, 38 years of marriage, and wife still does this, even the same complaint on which way it’s supposed to be installed.

StarKiller99 − We had a difference over “up and over” rather than “under and behind,” but if it's up and over, the cats will unwind it.

tipper420 − This is perfect! I hope he understands that you only do this to empty rolls that he should have replaced himself!

These users wrapped it up best, sometimes, a backward roll is the only language inconsiderate people understand.

[Reddit User] − I do the same thing to my MIL, but she hasn't figured out what the connection between no TP and backwards TP is.

lukas_carls − That is the most perfect way to encourage someone to be considerate. You'll be considerate when he starts being considerate. Boom.

This lighthearted petty revenge proves that sometimes the smallest habits spark the funniest household battles.

It’s a harmless reminder that actions, no matter how small, speak louder than rolls of paper.

Would you have done the same, or chosen a less sneaky route to prove your point? Share your take below!
