Sam Raimi, the visionary director behind the Tobey Maguire “Spider-Man” trilogy, has finally weighed in on the swirling rumors about a potential “Spider-Man 4.” The buzz further intensified following Maguire and Andrew Garfield‘s nostalgic return in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” igniting hopes for the revival of their respective Spidey franchises.
With the Spider-Verse concept captivating fans more than ever, speculation has been rampant about Sony possibly revisiting their previous Spider-Man entries, especially Raimi’s much-anticipated Spider-Man 4 which got cancelled in 2010.
However, when cornered by CBR for some solid answers, Raimi poured cold water on the rumors. Well, I haven’t heard about that yet,” he confessed, dampening hopes of a “Spider-Man 4” revival with Maguire at the helm, at least for now.
“Well, […] I’m actually not working on it yet . I mean, Marvel and Columbia [are] so successful with their current Spider-Man and the track there and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me and say ‘We could also tell that story!’ I’m not sure. But I love all the new Spider-Man movies. I loved Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was really, super powerful seeing Tobey [Maguire] again in it.”
Raimi’s journey with Spider-Man began in 2002, culminating in the legendary trilogy with two sequels in 2004 and 2007. Returning to Marvel’s fold with “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” in 2022, Raimi remains closely knit with the Marvel universe. However, it seems that he has yet to discuss a “Spider-Man 4” project with Maguire or hear of any developments from Marvel or Columbia Pictures.
“I haven’t talked to Tobey about it, but maybe Marvel has, or Columbia Pictures. But, I just worked with Marvel on a movie called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So, I’m on great terms with them. I’m sure I would hear about it if it was in the works. I think so. I don’t know.”
The tale of “Spider-Man 4” is one of what might have been, with Sony initially setting a 2011 release date following the first trilogy’s box office success. Despite efforts, including hiring James Vanderbilt and several others to pen the script, Raimi was still dissatisfied with the rewritten script.
As a result, he told Sony that he couldn’t meet the 2011 deadline and leave the project. Consequently, this resulted in Spider-Man 4’s ultimate cancellation in favor of rebooting the franchise with “The Amazing Spider-Man” starring Andrew Garfield.
Though Raimi’s direct involvement in bringing Maguire’s Spider-Man back might be off the table for now, the possibilities within the MCU‘s expanding multiverse leave room for speculation. From potential appearances in “Deadpool & Wolverine” to a variant role in the upcoming Avengers titles such as “The Kang Dynasty” and “Secret Wars,” Maguire’s Spider-Man could still find a way back into the Marvel narrative.
Besides, the original trilogy’s fans can stay positive, as Raimi has expressed openness to reuniting with Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, whether in the Spider-Verse or another project back in 2022.
“I’ve come to realize after making Doctor Strange that anything is possible, really anything in the Marvel universe, any team-ups. I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible.”
“I don’t really have a story or a plan. I don’t know if Marvel would be interested in that right now. I don’t know what their thoughts are about that. I haven’t really pursued that. But it sounds beautiful. Even if it wasn’t a Spider-Man movie, I’d love to work with Tobey again, in a different role,” said the acclaimed director, giving fans a glimmer of hope for Spider-Man 4’s much-anticipated resurrection.
