Woman Gets Called “A Failure”, Waited Years Before Delivering Petty Revenge

in Social Issues

A young woman’s long-buried hurt resurfaced at a wedding when she seized the chance to quietly turn the tables on the guy who tormented her throughout childhood. For years he had belittled her intelligence, loudly branding her a failure after one poor test score and insisting he was the brilliant one, leaving deep scars on her self-worth until their families lost touch.

Decades later, at his sister’s celebration, his mother mentioned his repeated rejections from top law firms in the city. As relatives offered sympathy over how tough the competition had become, she stayed silent. When asked about her own work, she met his gaze directly and named one of those exact elite firms. The room fell into stunned quiet, handing her a delicious instant of well-earned satisfaction.

Woman, without intention, executed revenge by revealing her elite law job to the childhood bully.

'Finding out I got the job my arrogant family friend (who told me I was stupid) got rejected from'

I have a close family friend who I grew up alongside. We had an intense rivalry when we were kids, and he looooved to make fun of me.

One of his favourite insults was to call me stupid, and make me feel super incompetent.

I remember a particular gathering when I was in year 7 when I jokingly confessed that I messed up a math test.

He then spent the rest of the evening telling everyone at this gathering that he was a straight A student and that I “was a failure.” (Verbatim)

He made digs about me being an i__ot routinely for years and at one point it genuinely affected my self esteem.

ANYWAY, our families grew apart, I got older and stopped seeing him for several years.

Last week though, I went to his sister's wedding and our families were talking.

His mother mentioned that he applied for clerkships at the top tier law firms in our city (We’re both law students btw) and he was rejected by them all.

Everyone else then tried to console him (he was visibly irritated by this) and commented things like “oh it’s really competitive, hardly anyone gets in these days”.

I didn’t say anything but then his mother asked me if I was working and I said yes and then she asked where.

At first, I contemplated saying something like “oh just a place in the city” but then I decided it was too good an opportunity to pass up

so instead I chose to look him straight in the face and name one of the firms he was rejected from.

Everyone went silent for a minute and I can’t explain how satisfying it was to see the astonished look on his face.

(Just to clarify though - I don’t think grades or a fancy job are a measure of intelligence or a persons worth at all -

but he definitely does and it was just a really petty win for me cause the guy was a total jacka__)

Edit: thank you for all the well wishes everyone!! Really appreciate it :)

Also FYI - I’m 22F and his mum is actually quite a sweet, lovely woman so I have no idea how he turned out the way he did lol.

He also wasn’t really a ‘friend’ of mine - our families were quite close so I saw him all the time growing up.

I stopped going to events he was at when I got older. For anyone curious about the rest of the night, someone else changed the subject

and I didn’t see him again after that as his family was quite busy bc it was his sister's wedding.

The Redditor didn’t seek out revenge actively, yet it practically fell into her lap. She freely admits grades and fancy jobs don’t define intelligence or worth, but since her rival built his entire ego around those things, dropping the truth bomb felt like the universe balancing the scales.

On one side, you have the guy who spent years belittling someone to prop himself up. On the other, our Redditor, who quietly leveled up without needing to broadcast it… until the perfect setup arrived. Was it petty? Absolutely. Was it harmless in the grand scheme? Pretty much. She never started a scene or rubbed it in his face. She just stated a fact and let the awkwardness do the work.

This taps into a broader social dynamic: the lingering sting of childhood bullying and how it shapes self-view for years. Repeatedly being told you’re “stupid” or incompetent can erode self-esteem, making people doubt their abilities even when evidence says otherwise. But many channel that hurt into quiet determination and prove the doubters wrong on their own terms.

And then there’s the emotional payoff. Psychologists call it ‘schadenfreude’, the pleasure we feel at a rival’s misfortune, especially when it feels deserved.

As neuroscientist Dean Burnett explains, “when we see someone mess up in ways that cause them to lose face, and thus lose social status, we can feel a burst of satisfaction as our own status is raised, at no cost to us.”

In the high-pressure world of law clerkships at top firms, competition is brutal. Acceptance rates hover low, with even strong candidates facing mass rejections as firms pick only a handful from thousands of applicants.

It underscores that success isn’t just about smarts. It’s timing, networking, resilience, and sometimes luck. Our Redditor earned her spot through hard work, not spite.

If you’re ever in a similar spot, consider this neutral nudge: rise above without apology, but don’t go looking for the fight. Let your life speak.

And if karma hands you a golden opportunity like this? Enjoy the moment guilt-free. It might even spark a little self-reflection in the other person… though don’t hold your breath.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Some people share personal stories of overcoming doubters or bullies from school/teachers and later achieving success that shocked them.

nomad_l17 − Oh yes, I know the satisfaction. I got sent back to my home country for secondary school

and I couldn't speak the language much less write essays etc.

So for five years I was usually the last in the grade and I took pure science instead of accounts because the accounts teacher went on leave.

So I made sure I enrolled in an accounting diploma which was taught in English

and I continued with my degree in accounting & finance at an overseas college.

I got a job at one of the most competitive companies in the country and am still there.

Attended one school reunion and the teachers were all like oh you're back in the country, where are you working?

Their faces showed pure shock when I answered and it still gives me good vibes to this day. Congrats and good luck!

NefInDaHouse − Oh, the moment of utter satisfaction. Reminds me a bit of my primary school teacher.

So, from 5th grade you can apply for a different school, gymnasium, a sort of premium school

(there are also options to apply from 7th and 9th grade, but you may be missing al the stuff taught at gymnasium from the 6th grade).

And this one teacher had a beef with me ever since I dared to correct her this one time

(silly me was full in pursuit of knowledge and couldn't wrap my head around the fact that teacher claims something that is incorrect,

oh how stupid and lacking self-preservation I was), and ever since, I couldn't do anything right in her eyes.

She was constantly belittling me, calling me stupid in front of the whole class,

half the class took to bullying me, since the teacher would do nothing about that... And then came the time we could apply for those schools.

I mostly applied for the fun of it, to see what it was about, since my parents originally wanted me to go to school that took applicants from 7th grade.

Of course the teacher would constantly tell me how useless I am, how stupid, how someone this stupid could never get accepted...

The moment when I told her I got accepted, while none of her darlings got, was pure awesome.

[Reddit User] − I can kind of relate. In high school I didn't yet treat my ADHD

and was often seen as the guy who was not that bright, the guy you want to avoid in group projects if you want 100% etc.

Some "smart" classmates even told me I'm not gonna end up anywhere good in life

(which is weird, I mean my grades were still decent, but they were 95% average students).

Anyway fast forward 5 years, I'm a nuclear engineer making quite the salary while 2 of them dropped out of university for abusing drugs,

one of them got expelled from university for a__on, and the others just never landed jobs and work min wage now.

It's really satisfying how things work out. All of their words now mean nothing to me and so I'm not even bothered by last experiences anymore

sqweet92 − My story doesn't count as petty revenge but yours reminded me of the time I went on a quick road trip with my best friend and her parents.

We somehow got on the subject of her dad locking her out of the house once, and he was denying it saying he would never do that.

My friend started crying and dropped the subject because it just wasn't worth it.

Her mom attempted to change the subject by asking me how my dad was doing.

My friend already knew what I was about to say because I had just vented to her about the issues I was having with him,

so as I answered I looked at my bestie and said "Idk I haven't talked to him in a few months because he kept denying that he ever did anything...

and wouldn't just accept his mistakes and apologize, even after I reminded him of specific situations." The car went silent and my friend smiled.

To give a bit of context, both her parents love me, especially her dad, because I talk back to him in Spanish when he tries to poke fun at me,...

nd her mom thinks the sun shines out of my a__ and if I was a guy she would 100% want me dating her daughter

(she's h__ophobic sadly, and doesn't want her daughter to be openly gay, even with me.

Unfortunately for me, my bff sees me as a little sister, so my bisexual heart is sad but also respects her boundaries)

Her dad asked about what my dad had done and I told him of just a few things

and I think he realized he might have been a d__k to my friend, because he didn't ask anymore questions about my own dad.

Maybe this counts as unintentional petty revenge.

Some people celebrate the petty satisfaction and justice of the OP’s subtle reveal about the job offer.

hat-of-sky − Plot twist: his mother knew. That's why she lobbed you that set-up, because she can't stand him either.

(Of course I'm just making that up, but it could be.)

[Reddit User] − Love this. Serves him right and also indicates that him being rejected from all these firms could be a “him problem”.

Random_Raw_Dogger − Sweet, sudden, petty revenge is a dish best enjoyed with other people. Congrats on the job!

Admirable-Course9775 − He deserved that! Good for you! Congratulations

Some people offer simple congratulations and positive wishes for the OP’s job.

InformedConservative − Living your best life speaks volumes. Congratulations on your job, you’re going to do great!

sundancer2788 − Congratulations on the job and best wishes! That was perfect!

A delightful reminder that living well really is the best revenge. Congrats again to the OP on the job! Do you think her reveal was fair game after years of being torn down, or should she have taken the high road forever?

Have you ever had a “quiet glow-up” moment against a past critic? How would you handle running into your old rival at a family event? Drop your hot takes below, we’re all ears!
