Woman Refuses to Work With Her Brother’s Friend After His Girlfriend Starts Monitoring Her

in Social Issues

Working with family can already blur the lines between personal and professional relationships.

When a workplace issue involves a relative who is also your boss, standing up for yourself can become much more complicated.

One employee found herself in that exact situation after a coworker’s unusual behavior crossed a line.

What started as an annoying habit of constantly being on a video call became something much more uncomfortable when the coworker began showing his partner the workplace layout to prove where she was.

After bringing her concerns to her brother, who owns the business, she was told to handle it herself.

Now she is questioning whether refusing to work alongside this coworker is reasonable or if she is creating unnecessary conflict.

not the actual photo

'AITAH for telling my boss that I don’t want to be surveilled by my coworkers girlfriend at work?'

Context : my (36f) boss is my brother (42m). I largely wfh but I also work

part time at my brother’s food truck. Recently he hired his friend, I’ll call

him Jake. Jake spends his entire shift on FaceTime with his girlfriend.

Initially it was annoying but I just let it go because it’s not my problem and I

only have one shift with this person per week.

However, this weekend during our only shift together Jake started

defending himself to his gf about where I was in relation to him inside of

the truck. At one point he grabbed his phone to show her a 360 of the like

14 foot truck so she could see that I was no where near him. Obviously this

is super invasive and also just straight up weird. It was very clear to me that

what started as a strange and unprofessional behavior had escalated into

straight up surveillance.

I told my brother that I am no longer comfortable working with Jake if he is

on his phone to which I was told that it is my problem and I need to handle

it myself. When I reminded him that it’s his business and he’s the boss he

got pretty upset and told me that if he (my brother) is not doing his job

well enough then I should just quit. I will say I absolutely think he’s bluffing

on that I have helped my brother build this business and frankly he

doesn’t want to do alot of the jobs (paperwork mainly) that I do for him.

That said, I have been considering leaving the job for a while.. So guys,

AITAH for saying I won’t work with this guy anymore?

Family businesses often blur the line between personal relationships and professional responsibilities.

A disagreement that would normally be handled through workplace policies can quickly become emotionally charged when the manager is also a sibling.

Yet regardless of family ties, every employee has the right to work in an environment where their privacy and comfort are respected.

According to this account, the poster works remotely for her brother’s business while also helping at his food truck.

A newly hired employee reportedly spent entire shifts on FaceTime with his girlfriend. Although the constant phone calls were distracting, the poster initially chose to ignore them because they did not directly affect her work.

The situation changed when the employee allegedly turned the phone toward the interior of the truck to prove to his girlfriend where the poster was standing, effectively showing her the workspace without the poster’s consent.

Feeling that this crossed the line from unprofessional behavior into an invasion of privacy, she asked her brother, the owner, not to schedule her with that employee if the behavior continued.

Instead of addressing the concern, her brother reportedly told her to handle it herself and suggested she quit if she believed he was managing the business poorly.

The central issue is not simply the FaceTime call itself. It is the expectation that employees should unknowingly become part of someone else’s personal video conversation.

Most people reasonably expect that coworkers, not strangers on the other end of a video call, will be the only audience during their shift.

Even if the employee’s intention was merely to reassure his girlfriend, repeatedly pointing a camera around a confined workplace without colleagues’ permission can make others feel monitored rather than respected.

Viewed through that lens, the poster’s request appears relatively limited.

She did not ask for the employee to be fired or disciplined immediately.

Instead, she explained that she no longer felt comfortable working alongside someone who continuously broadcast the workplace through video calls.

Whether the owner chooses to establish a no-phone policy, prohibit personal video calls during shifts, or speak privately with the employee is a management decision, but ignoring the concern risks sending the message that employee comfort is secondary to avoiding an awkward conversation.

The broader lesson is that professionalism applies even in small, family-run businesses.

Familiar relationships should not lower workplace standards but strengthen them.

Employees should be able to focus on serving customers without wondering whether they are being shown to strangers through someone’s phone.

Respecting reasonable boundaries is not about restricting personal relationships, it is about ensuring that everyone sharing a workplace feels safe, valued, and treated with the same consideration they would expect in any professional environment.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors advised the poster to quit and find a more professional workplace because her brother was failing to manage the business properly

toxiclight − NTA. Better to leave sooner rather than later, because the

coworker's behavior is unacceptable. I'm assuming you're a woman and

your coworker's gf is jealous? Either way, not your circus, not your monkeys.

MidwestNormal − NTA. Your brother is clearly not equipped to “run” this

business if he can’t make a clearly obvious decision about an employee’s

unprofessional behavior. I suspect that much of the business’ success is due

to you. Start looking for a different position where things are run

professionally.

OutragedPineapple − NTA. He wants to be a big boss but doesn't want to

do the actual responsibilities of being a boss? He's a wimp and his 'business'

is probably going to crash and burn real quick. You don't want any part of

that dumpster fire. Take what he owes you and leave.

Humble_Pen_7216 − NTA. Call his bluff and quit. He can either accept your

resignation or deal with his friend

destro23 − At one point he grabbed his phone to show her a 360 of the like

14 foot truck so she could see that I was no where near him. I'm guessing

you are an attractive girl from this, cause why else would she care? NTA -

Quit the job, you don't need all that.

Your brother, on the other hand, needs to learn how to properly run a

business on his own. Deep end time.

BulbasaurRanch − So quit. Your brother is a failure of a boss. Show him first

hand what his “leadership” results in.

TNJDude − NTA. Your brother and Jake are being very unprofessional and

dismissing your concerns because of familiarity with you. They don't

respect you enough to care what you think, and being family/friend makes

them think they can do that. Simply go work for someone who cares and

let your brother find someone else.

In the meantime, whenever Jake is on the phone with his girlfriend, yell

over to him "Hey babe, can you hand me rolls? " or "Sweetie, can you help

me for a second? "

calacmack − He's prioritizing a loser over you, despite your significant

contributions. It's not going to get better so start looking for job with a

better work environment. NTA.

These commenters agreed that Jake’s constant FaceTime calls were highly unprofessional and that the brother needed to stop the behavior immediately

smokinNcruisin − Tell him good luck finding somebody that’s willing to put

up with that nonsense. It’s extremely unprofessional for him to be on

FaceTime while he’s working even if he’s not engaging with the person on

the phone.

He’ll either back down and do what he needs to do or you will need to find

a new job which it sounds like you’re on the precipice of wanting to do

anyways.

nordicskye − Is your brother dense? Who wants an employee who is on a

videocall 24/7? NTA.

Dino_Jr_ − That’s a very uncomfortable work environment. NTA. Don’t

work the shift unless he stops using his phone.

Individual_You_6586 − NTA. Being filmed at work is invasive and

unacceptable.   If Jake’s girlfriend is constantly jealous, HE should quit.   But

you can also solve this. On your next shift with Jake, lay down the law. He’s

there to work, not to coddle his partner’s feelings; and he has no right to

live broadcast from your workplace.

Tell him he’s going to do the shift alone if he starts filming.

Glittering-Paper4516 − Take a bit of space and approach him again.

“Asking you to handle this as Jake’s boss was a sign of respect and I’m sorry

you didn’t see it that way. You know his behavior isn’t professional. Let me

know when you’ve talked to him”  NTA

This disagreement wasn’t really about one employee using FaceTime, it was about workplace boundaries and feeling respected.

Many readers felt the situation crossed a line when a coworker effectively broadcast the workspace to someone outside the business and made another employee part of his relationship drama.

Others believed the bigger issue was the brother’s response as a boss, dismissing a legitimate concern instead of addressing it professionally.

What do you think? Was refusing to work with Jake a reasonable boundary, or should the poster have handled the issue directly with him instead of involving the owner? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
