Relationships often start with that exciting, hopeful feeling of getting to know someone new. Everything is fresh, and you overlook minor things that might raise an eyebrow, assuming they’re just quirks or misunderstandings.

That was the case for this woman, who started dating a sweet, caring guy with no immediate red flags. But one night, while casually scrolling through social media together, she spotted something unsettling.

Andrew Tate’s videos popped up on his feed, and his comment about Tate being “misunderstood” caught her off guard. She’s now left wondering if this is a harmless interest or a deeper concern. Keep reading to find out how her past experiences are influencing her feelings and why she’s unsure whether to be worried.

A woman is concerned after her boyfriend expresses admiration for Andrew Tate, but is unsure how to feel

'My new boyfriend follows Andrew Tate, should I worry?'

So I’ve been dating this guy (26m) for about a month now, and it’s starting to become serious between us.

He is such a sweet guy, I haven’t noticed any red flags - and I’m normally very hyper vigilant to such.

The other night we were both scrolling through reels on our phones, and I see a couple of Andrew Tate videos pop up on his for you page.

So I ask him if he likes Tate, he didn’t really give a straightforward answer - but while discussing,

he says something like “Tate is kinda misunderstood,

and if you watch his full discussions with women etc., you would view him in a different light”

But idk, I must confess I don’t really know that much about him, but from what I’ve heard he’s basically a walking red flag.

I know my boyfriend likes boxing, and that’s probably partly why he’s interested.

I should also mention that my bf was raised in a female dominated home and is a little mamas boy, and loves his sisters very much too!

He’s never spoken disrespectfully about any women and is very gentle and mindful of me! So should I be worried?

1. Who Andrew Tate is and what his reputation actually reflects

Andrew Tate is a controversial online personality known for promoting a hyper‑macho worldview that many experts describe as misogynistic and harmful.

His commentary has led to bans from major platforms (Facebook, Instagram) and he’s been widely criticized for remarks about women that many social scientists and educators consider sexist or demeaning.

Tate’s influence isn’t only anecdotal; research and reports have documented how his rhetoric has spread through social media and been adopted by some young men, sometimes normalizing problematic ideas about gender, relationships, and hierarchy.

2. What research says about figures like Tate and their appeal

Scholars studying online communities like the manosphere (a cluster of male‑oriented groups including “red pill,” MGTOW, incels, and self‑improvement influencers like Tate) describe how such figures offer simplistic, emotionally satisfying narratives about masculinity and social role stress. Some research suggests:

These influencers appeal to people facing identity confusion, loneliness, or social frustration by providing a sense of clarity or belonging.

Their content often frames modern gender dynamics in binary, oppositional ways, sometimes portraying gender equality as a threat rather than a balanced goal.

Content from this sphere often emphasizes “dominant masculinity” and rigid gender roles, which scholars link to reinforcement of unequal power dynamics.

These findings do not mean that every follower will adopt all beliefs, but they do show that the ideology behind many such influencers contains themes that conflict with gender equality, respect, and mutual partnership which are important values in healthy relationships.

3. How this shows up in real life

Educators and researchers have observed that the influence of Tate and similar figures sometimes correlates with the spread of sexist or misogynistic language and attitudes, even among younger boys.

According to reporting from Education Week, teachers have seen some students repeat offensive rhetoric associated with Tate online, which can shape social dynamics and perceptions of gender roles.

Another report from the DCU Anti‑Bullying Centre highlights how online influencers in the manosphere can contribute to gender‑based discrimination and harmful stereotyping, raising real concerns among educators and parents.

4. What researchers don’t say

It’s also important to note that not everyone who watches or follows Tate is automatically misogynistic or abusive.

A recent study commissioned by the UK broadcast regulator Ofcom found that many men who engaged with manosphere content did so without adopting extreme views and were capable of critical thinking or rejecting harmful messages.

This nuance matters, someone can watch content from controversial figures for different reasons (motivation, debate interest, humor, curiosity) without fully endorsing their ideology. But watching does open the door to ideas that can subtly shape attitudes over time.

5. What this means for a relationship

Having seen this research, the question isn’t simply “Should I worry?”, it”’s “What does following this content mean for values and communication in this relationship?”

  • Following controversial influencers can be a red flag if it reflects unexamined acceptance of harmful beliefs.
  • But it isn’t definitive proof that someone is abusive or holds those beliefs.
  • What matters most is whether your boyfriend critically engages with the content or passively absorbs it, and whether he respects your values and boundaries.

You don’t have to know every detail about Andrew Tate to ask important questions like:

  • “What do you think about some of the things Tate says about relationships and women?”
  • “Do you agree with those ideas, or do you see them as exaggerated or problematic?”
  • “How do you think those messages apply to real relationships versus online hype?”

How he answers is a much stronger indicator of his values than the mere fact that content popped up in his feed.

Check out how the community responded:

This group criticizes the defense of Andrew Tate, calling it inexcusable and a red flag

Aminal1234 − I disagree with your “I haven’t noticed any red flags” statement.

[Reddit User] − Red. Flag. This is a man with trafficking and DV charges. You can't say that's "misunderstood".

He's probably absorbed misogyny by osmosis even if he didn't go into his videos. Don't waste time with tater tots

luluzinhacs − INFO how long have you met this guy for?

Honestly, saying a human trafficker and rapist is misunderstood is inexcusable in my eyes

These commenters emphasize Tate’s violent behavior and criminal history, urging the poster to run from him

spilly_talent − There are videos out there of Andrew Tate literally beating the hell out of his female partners.

That is the only light I need to view him in, he is a monster.

Old-Zebra-3107 − Tate is on video violently choking a woman and is currently fleeing a trial for r*pe and s__ trafficking charges.

He's also a generally massive, idiotic piece of s__t. I'd be concerned.

dngrkty − RUN. Tate's advice to his followers for "dealing with" a woman who disagrees with you is "punch, chke, rpe" until she's compliant.

This group expresses deep concern for the poster’s safety, warning that men who admire Tate are dangerous and manipulative

Nivosus − I am a man. I am friends with many men.

We all see Andrew Tate as a guy who hates women, wants to subjugate them, strip them of their humanity, and define them as property.

We all hate him and hope he ends up in prison for his horrific crimes. Any man who likes him, is not a man. They are a child.

A hateful child.

Payup_sucker − As quickly as you can change “new” to “ex”

[Reddit User] − Run away as fast as you can. Guys like this will hide themselves until a few months in, when he thinks he has you “locked in.”

Girl, run. You’ll regret it later if you don’t.

These Redditors highlight the toxic influence of Tate and the potential risks to the poster’s future, advising immediate action

OwnCaramel1434 − They are always "mamas boys". You'll be picking up after this "adult toddler" very soon and then the tantrums will start.

wanderliz-88 − We are who we listen to and surround ourselves with. Do not forget this.

magpieofchaos − Holy s__t yes, you should worry.

SadExercises420 − You should be running in the opposite direction of this guy,

or really any person who makes a claim like “Tate is really misunderstood”. Barf.

bongtermrelationship − The way you’re responding in these comments tell us you’re not taking the information and walking away, like you should.

You WILL become a statistic if you stay.

People who think violent men who r*pe are “misunderstood” are waiting to be violent rapists themselves.

It always happens once they trap you, once you get married, once you get pregnant,

if not before all of that if you show him you’re meek enough to stay and put up with it.

Also you mentioned he was a mama’s boy, guess who will be supporting him when you’re fighting legal battles against him?

[Reddit User] − He's gonna start talking about "females" and slowly become insufferable to be around.

When it comes to a relationship, the stakes are high, especially when your partner’s beliefs start to feel at odds with your core values. In this case, Tate’s influence is more than just a passing interest; it could shape how your partner views and treats you in the long run.

Can someone be “misunderstood,” or is this a serious warning sign? For this woman, it’s a crossroads. She needs to decide whether to let this go, or face the uncomfortable reality that some red flags can’t be ignored.

So, what do you think? Should she stay and trust him, or should she walk away before things get deeper? Share your thoughts below!
