Woman Babysits SIL’s Kids For Free, Then Sees Texts Calling Her “Annoying” And Refuses To Help Again

Helping family can sometimes feel like walking a tightrope. You try to be kind, supportive, and cooperative, even when the relationship isn’t exactly warm. Many people convince themselves that putting in the extra effort will eventually smooth things over.

That was the mindset of one 26 year old woman who agreed to babysit her sister in law’s kids on weekends, even though she wasn’t getting paid. She hoped it would ease the awkward tension between them and make her husband happy.

But during a family dinner, a quick glance at a phone notification revealed a conversation she was never meant to see. The messages painted a very different picture of how her help was actually being appreciated. Scroll down to see why the situation quickly spiraled into a family conflict.

AITAH for refusing to babysit my sister in laws kids after i saw text messages between her and my mother in law saying horrible things about me?

I (26f) am married to my husband (28m). I don’t have the best relationship with his family but have always been civil.

I’ve never had a problem with my sister-in-law (30f) but there was always some tension between us.

She asked me two months ago to babysit her children since she likes going out with her girlfriends on weekends

but never got the time because of the kids and plus i don’t work weekends.

My husband thought this would be a great way to bond with her kids (4f) (7m)

and smooth the tension between me and my sil.

I thought a few weekends here and there wouldn’t hurt but she was also refusing to pay since I’m ‘family’.

I didn’t want to without payment but I did want make my husband happy and keep the peace

because I knew she was going to cause drama in his family if I didn’t so I said yes.

It wasn’t so bad and the kids are nice and respectful, plus she payed for food. Fast forward to this weekend, i saw a notification on my sils phone who...

at a family dinner between my mil and sil talking s__t about me saying stuff like i’m annoying.

I was shocked because i had been babysitting her kids for free and been very nice to her.

I confronted both of them with my husband who said it wasn’t a big deal and to drop it but I was enraged.

They both said I had no right to snoop and crossed a line but eventually they gave a halfhearted apology.

I was still mad at them and my husband for not sticking up for me.

My sil asked me if I could babysit on Sunday. I said no and told her i was shocked at the audacity for her even asking.

Now her ,my husband and his family are mad and saying i’m overreacting and blowing things out of proportion.

I think I’m in the right but my husband isn’t speaking to me and is sleeping in the guest room.

So, Reddit, I'm a TA

Everyone wants to believe that kindness will be met with kindness. When someone gives their time, energy, and patience, especially to family, they often do it with the quiet hope that the effort will be appreciated.

When that goodwill is met with ridicule or disrespect behind closed doors, the betrayal can feel deeper than the original conflict itself.

In this story, the OP wasn’t just deciding whether to babysit again. She was reacting to a moment that reframed months of emotional effort. She had agreed to watch her sister-in-law’s children for free, despite her initial discomfort, partly to maintain peace in her husband’s family and partly to build a better relationship.

When she unexpectedly saw messages mocking her, the issue became less about childcare and more about dignity. Feeling dismissed by both her sister-in-law and her husband likely intensified the hurt. Psychologically, moments like these trigger what researchers call a “violation of reciprocity”, when someone’s goodwill is met not just with ingratitude, but with contempt.

Interestingly, reactions to situations like this often split public opinion. Some people view refusing to babysit as retaliation, arguing that family disagreements should not affect practical help. But another perspective is that the OP’s refusal represents a boundary rather than revenge.

When individuals discover they’ve been the subject of private ridicule while still being expected to provide unpaid help, continuing the arrangement can feel like participating in their own disrespect. From a psychological standpoint, boundaries often emerge not from anger alone, but from the realization that kindness without mutual respect becomes exploitation.

Experts in relationship psychology often emphasize the importance of boundaries in family dynamics. According to licensed clinical social worker Sharon Martin, people frequently struggle with guilt when they stop doing things for others, even when those actions are draining or unappreciated.

However, she explains that boundaries are not punishments; they are a way of protecting one’s emotional well-being and clarifying what behavior is acceptable.

Seen through this lens, the OP’s decision to stop babysitting may not simply be about anger over a rude message. It may reflect the moment she recognized that her effort to “keep the peace” had come at the expense of her own self-respect. When her husband minimized the situation, the emotional isolation likely deepened the wound, making the boundary feel even more necessary.

Family relationships often blur the line between generosity and obligation. But kindness works best when it is voluntary and appreciated, not expected as a silent duty.

In situations like this, stepping back from unpaid emotional labor can sometimes be the clearest way to restore balance, not to punish others, but to remind everyone involved that respect should never be optional.

These Redditors argued the real issue is the husband not supporting his wife

CharmingWarning9611 − NTA but you really have a husband problem.

He did not stick up for you and suggested you are overreacting. And now imagine having kids with that guy

where his mother's and sister's opinion means much more to him than yours.

I can imagine SIL dropping her kids off with you because you're home with your kids anyway

so you are free to look after hers and your husband's not going to do anything about it,

as at the end of the day 'family helps family and you shouldn't complain'. Honestly, think about this.

To me it is a huge red flag

GrouchyBear_99 − "I (26f) am married to my husband (28m). I don’t have the best relationship with his family" Lady,

I've got news for you: you don't have the best relationship with your husband either.

He is the reason why you're being taken advantage of. For god's sake, don't have any kids of your own

until you get this "relationship" on equal footing and stabilized.

NTA unless you keep letting him and his family use you.

Well-Done22 − If your husband treats you like a doormat, how can you be surprised your in-laws see you as that?

You have a major husband problem.

greenglossygalaxy − Your husband is an i__ot.

My sympathies for you having to deal with him on top of your two-faced MIL and SIL.

What a flipping cheek to call you annoying and then yet again ask for a favour. Nope. NTA

llkahl − NTA. Tell your husband that he needs to have your back on this.

I had issues with my in-laws early on in our marriage. My wife reluctantly told her parents to back off,

and eventually things smoothed over. If she had not, we would not still be married 47 years later.

Husbands and wives are a pair and they need to stand together or go in different directions. That’s what a marriage is.

These commenters suggested the husband or MIL should babysit instead

Artistic-Sherbert136 − Let your husband take care of his sister's kids since he's so anxious to please her.

Hold your ground. Your in-laws are entitled takers.

moncyka − NTA husband/mil can babysit the kids

bad-mean-daddy − Get your MIL to babysit Or for that fact how about your hubby do it?

Have him read the responses on here to make him realise what a wuss he is for not standing up for you NTA in any way

These users criticized the in-laws for expecting free childcare and favors

Away-Elephant-4323 − Your in-laws sure don’t think your annoying when she needs a free babysitter!

It’s not the kids fault but the sis and mom sound insufferable!

lilkittrn666 − NTA; free childcare in this economy? You aren’t a babysitter, and even if you were,

you'd need to be paid. Looking at her phone was a little aholeish

but at the same time she shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds her

CyberRedhead27 − NTA, obviously. I absolutely despise the "I shouldn't have to pay you

because you're family" mentality. Same with the "but we're friends" mentality.

Offer to pay for the service, and let the family/friend choose not to accept the payment.

What began as a simple family favor quickly turned into a lesson about boundaries and respect. After discovering the hurtful messages, the woman felt her kindness had been taken for granted and many readers understood why she decided to step back.

Still, the bigger issue might be how she and her husband handle conflicts with family moving forward. What do you think? Was refusing to babysit the right call, or did the situation escalate too quickly?
