Woman Tricks Her Family Into Thinking Her Cake Pops Are Better Than SIL’s – Was She Wrong?

Sometimes, a little healthy competition between family members can make for entertaining moments but when it involves something as personal as baking, it can stir up some drama.

A woman (32F) found herself tired of being overshadowed by her sister-in-law (39F), a renowned baker in the family, whose treats always seemed to be preferred by their relatives. Despite her own talents as a baker, OP’s creations were frequently overlooked, leading to frustration.

So, OP decided to teach her family a lesson at a Memorial Day BBQ. She baked the exact same cake pops as her sister-in-law and waited for her family to praise them. When they did, she revealed the truth, leaving Kay and the rest of the family stunned. Now, OP is left wondering if her playful revenge went too far, or if she was right to stand up for herself.

After being ignored and criticized for her baking, one woman tricks her in-laws into trying her treats instead of her sister-in-law’s

'AITA for tricking my in-laws into trying my food?'

This isn’t necessarily my proudest moment but I am tired of being the outcast.

My (32f) husband “Pete” (34m) comes from a family where the women are all bakers.

I am a baker myself and I used to sell out of my house under my states cottage laws but stopped because I like it just being a hobby.

His SIL “Kay” (39) is the one who is “known” for her cupcakes and cake pops.

When I first met everyone years ago, it was the first thing I learned. Everyone talked about everything she made.

Even when Pete mentioned how good my stuff was, everyone would say that Kay sells hers and they’re popular so they must be better.

Whenever I bring treats, they are often left untouched because “they are not Kay’s”. Yes, I’ve been told that.

They ask me to bring something every get together and never touch it.

To be clear, Kay is mainly a baker whereas I bake and specialize in professionally decorated cakes.

Kay says that overly decorated cakes are compensating for their bad taste and Pete’s family agrees.

We had a BBQ Monday for Memorial Day and everyone made their treats. Kay decided to bring cake pops.

She posted them on her Instagram the night before. So, and I know this immature, I made the exact same ones she did, same flavor and design.

We got there and everyone asked where my treats were. I said they’re in car and I’ll get them in a minute.

So I waited for everyone to be outside then I brought mine in and put them next to Kay’s.

After we eat, I notice the family eating my cake pops and not Kay’s. She didn’t notice at first and then asked if they weren’t feeling cake pops.

They said they just ate them and they were the best she ever made and asked what she did different.

MIL even said they looked so much better in person than in the picture.

Kay was confused and said hers were still on the table. That’s when I said, “Oh, I brought those. Glad you enjoyed them.”

Her husband said he hadn’t had one yet (lies, he ate two) and everyone else just said “yeah, they were okay.” Kay didn’t say anything the rest of the night.

Pete thought it was funny (he didn’t know what I did until the reveal) but his brother (Kay’s husband) said yesterday that what I did was mean

and I’m just mad that Kay is a better baker.

But Pete said it’s ridiculous the family, including Kay, puts down my baking when they won’t even try it all because I’m not Kay. AITA?

ETA: We aren’t the only two who bring desserts, just the ones who tend to bake cake more than others.

Everyone else’s desserts get eaten to some degree except mine.

Edit 2: If it’s not clear, “everyone” includes Kay. She has often tried to “teach” me techniques that I either already knew or were completely wrong.

So she wasn’t like an innocent that got caught in the line of fire or something.

Family dynamics often revolve around unspoken expectations, and the OP in this situation was caught in a difficult spot. As a baker, she had always wanted her efforts to be appreciated, but time and time again, her treats were ignored or dismissed because they weren’t made by her sister-in-law, Kay, the “golden baker” of the family.

The OP’s decision to replicate Kay’s cake pops was, in a sense, an act of desperation for validation to prove that her baking could stand up to Kay’s in the eyes of the family.

However, this well‑intended act of seeking recognition turned into a game of deception that ultimately raised more questions about the boundaries of family support and competition.

At its core, the OP’s feelings were not just about a cake pop comparison, they were about the emotional toll of constant invalidation. In many families, the emotional labor of gift-giving, even in the form of baked goods, is often overlooked.

As social comparison theory explains, when someone is constantly judged against another person, especially within a family, it can lead to feelings of inadequacy and frustration.

The OP had witnessed firsthand how the family lavished praise on Kay’s treats, while her own efforts were left unacknowledged, even when she poured her heart into them. This constant comparison can lead to diminished self-esteem, especially when one’s talents are unappreciated.

According to Psychology Today, social comparison theory suggests that people measure their self-worth based on others, which is why the OP’s need to prove her skills by “tricking” the family makes psychological sense.

The OP’s actions reflect the emotional consequences of feeling excluded. Dr. Melanie Greenberg, a clinical psychologist, notes that in family situations, when someone feels overlooked or disregarded, they may resort to drastic measures to gain recognition.

The OP’s choice to replicate Kay’s cake pops wasn’t driven by malice but by an urge to prove herself, to challenge the narrative that Kay was the only talented baker in the family. This behavior is understandable, as it stems from a need for respect and acknowledgment in a setting where the OP had been left out.

However, deception as a way to gain respect can lead to unintended consequences, especially when it’s uncovered.

In this case, the OP’s strategy backfired, and while the family may have acknowledged the quality of her baking, the truth behind the act created tension with Kay and her husband. Instead of fostering a positive connection, the situation raised doubts about trust and fairness, creating more division.

As psychologist Dr. Judith Orloff explains, healthy boundaries are essential in preventing emotional burnout and maintaining respect in relationships. She advises setting limits with family members and communicating needs directly rather than through manipulative tactics.

This is why, although the OP’s actions may have been understandable, a healthier approach could have been to communicate openly about her frustrations.

Instead of tricking Kay and the family, the OP could have explained how her feelings were hurt by the lack of appreciation for her baking. Open dialogue, while difficult, could have fostered a deeper understanding of the emotional challenges she was facing, without resorting to trickery.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters support OP’s actions, acknowledging the family’s favoritism and agreeing that the petty act was justified and hilarious

Emptyplates − NTA, but Pete's family is full of AHs.

FoxBun_17 − NTA Gotta love how they said how much better it looked/tasted when they thought Kay made it,

but immediately changed their tune once the truth came out. Kay sounds like an insufferable s__b when it comes to baking,

and there is clear favoritism in the family, so it's high time you made your point. And thank goodness Pete had your back.

MySquishyFishy − I mean. .. People are going to say you're TA for all that petty, but you know what, I'm here for it. NTA.

Kay needed to be taken down a notch, and the family needed to hear how shittily they've been treating you.

You're not obligated to follow along while everyone puffs up her ego.

Sweet_pea_girl − This is so ridiculous. I'm an amateur baker and get very good feedback on my cakes,

and see absolutely no need to get weird and competitive about it.

Like, I'm here hyping up what other people made and encouraging folks to have some because f__k,

there's enough room in the world (and tummies) for multiple cakes and bakers and why can't we just share the love?

NTA because while yes, this was petty AF, I think it was justified and also pretty funny.

However, I don't imagine it will help these people grow up.

This group sees the act as petty but understandable, suggesting OP could have handled it differently, though they still find it amusing

brainfreeze4445 − What you did was petty. I don't blame you for being pissed at them but it was still petty as hell.

For that reason I give you a soft YTA and a high five for making them look dumb.

pawsons − Soft ESH. Soft A for you because what you did was petty, but honestly also kind of understandable.

Hard A for your extended family obviously.

Instead of being petty you could have just refused to bring anything and justified it with their history of not even touching your stuff.

That being said, it was also kind of hilarious and I wouldn’t feel too bad about it. They had it coming with their snobbish comments.

8ell0 − A) that was some sweet petty revenge post it on r/pettyrevenge B) NTA; y’all all grown adults and this is cupcakes.

Who gives a s__t about cupcake tribalism; eat the thing and enjoy the party. C) in laws sound like little children; poor Katy’s feelings can’t be hurt. Rise above this;

These users focus on the family’s behavior and suggest OP stop bringing baked goods altogether, as the family doesn’t appreciate them anyway

[Reddit User] − NTA His family is rude af. "Bake them and bring them! Now that thy unskilled hand hath brought them, we shan't touch!"

[Reddit User] − Ugh, this family f__king sucks. How do you suffer through it?

I'm not the one married to Pete but I certainly feel the urge to divorce him and his family.

SnooOnions1515 − NTA. Just stop baking stuff for them.

excel_pager_420 − NTA but for the love of all things good, just stop bringing things.

And if they ask, say they never eat them anyway so you've decided to save your money.

This group points out the family’s disrespect for OP and suggests skipping family gatherings or confronting the issue head-on.

Please_call_me_Tama − NTA, this was amazing and sometimes extreme assholery requires extreme pettiness.

But OP, why isn't your husband putting his foot down about his family's mistreatment of you? In my family this would warrant no or low contact.

forthewatch39 − I remember this being done in an episode of _Desperate Housewives_.

Bree was known as the best chef in their friend group and then Katherine came into the neighborhood.

They told her she could bring a salad, she did that and made the dessert and switched out the pie with hers.

Everyone said it was the best they ever had and asked Bree what she did differently. She took one bite and knew immediately it wasn’t hers.

The salad Katherine made was apparently gourmet as well with baby arugula and candied walnuts, she came to play as Bree’s husband put it.

[Reddit User] − NTA. But this isn't about baked goods. They simply don't like you or respect you. I'd skip the family gatherings from now on,

and if you must go, don't bring anything and just say "I know no one likes my cooking, so I'll spare everyone, including myself, the trouble."

Time to stop dancing around, and just get everything out on the table.

What would you have done in her situation? Should she have played it cooler, or was this her time to stand up for herself? Share your thoughts in the comments!
