Mother Accused Of “Lying” About Her Symptoms After Removing Shirt In Her Own Home

Awkward moments can happen to anyone, especially in your own home where you expect to feel the most comfortable.

For this original poster, a sudden moment of discomfort led to a quick decision that she didn’t think twice about—until it became a much bigger issue later.

What seemed like a harmless reaction in the moment ended up leaving her feeling embarrassed and at odds with her daughter, who saw the situation very differently.

Now, what should have been forgotten has turned into an unexpected conflict. Keep reading to see how this situation unfolded!

Mother removes shirt due to overheating, daughter feels embarrassed in front of friends

Mother Accused Of "Lying" About Her Symptoms After Removing Shirt In Her Own Home
not the actual photo

'AITA for taking off my shirt in front of my daughter's friends because I was having a hot flash ?'

I (55f) felt I was on fire in my living room so I took off my shirt. I had a vest underneath.

My daughter Becky (27f) and several of her friends were in the living room.

I was humiliated as I was sweaty and red in a sweaty vest.

2 days later, Becky confronted me. She said I embarrassed her,

and that her male friends are taking about me to her.

I told her I couldn't help it but she called me a liar.

Am I the a__hole ?

Sometimes embarrassment doesn’t come from what actually happened but from how it’s later interpreted by others.

In this situation, OP didn’t act out of carelessness or attention-seeking. She reacted to a physical sensation in the moment.

Feeling overheated can trigger an almost instinctive response, especially in one’s own home, where there’s an expectation of comfort and privacy. The important detail is that she wasn’t exposing herself in a sexual or inappropriate way, she still had a vest on.

But what felt like a quick, necessary reaction to her became something her daughter later framed as socially inappropriate.

From Becky’s perspective, though, the situation likely felt very different. Social embarrassment, especially in front of peers, can be intense even for adults.

Her reaction seems less about what OP actually did and more about how her friends interpreted it afterward.

The discomfort may have been amplified by comments from others, turning a brief moment into something that lingered. That’s why she pushed the idea that OP “couldn’t help it” because if it *could* have been avoided, then the embarrassment feels more personal.

What’s interesting here is how people assign intent after the fact. OP experienced the moment as involuntary. Becky interpreted it as avoidable.

That gap is where the conflict sits. Psychologically, this ties into how people process embarrassment.

According to expert insights, embarrassment is often less about the actual event and more about perceived social judgment.

When someone feels judged by others, they may redirect that discomfort toward the person they believe caused it, even if the situation wasn’t intentional.

That helps explain why Becky reacted so strongly days later. The embarrassment didn’t fade, it grew through retelling, comments, and reflection.

Meanwhile, OP is left confused because her intention was never to create a scene. This mismatch between intention and impact is common in family dynamics, especially when personal comfort clashes with social expectations.

Looking at the bigger picture, OP wasn’t acting inappropriately, she was reacting to her body in her own home. But Becky’s feelings, while perhaps exaggerated, are still real to her.

The tension comes from two valid experiences colliding, not from one person clearly being wrong.

In situations like this, the real issue isn’t the moment itself. It’s how much weight gets assigned to it afterward.

Because sometimes, what feels like a fleeting, forgettable moment to one person can become a defining embarrassment to another and neither fully understands why.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

This group provided the most visceral descriptions of what a hot flash actually feels like

TangledUpPuppeteer − I remember the first time my mom had a hot flash.

We had a bunch of people over, and I don’t remember for what.

But it was a coed group, and it was my friends and my sister’s friends.

There were probably 25 people that didn’t belong to us in that house.

My mom came in to find out what we wanted for dinner.

We were all arguing and she was clearly done with our shenanigans.

She opened her mouth, likely to tell us all to eat dirt, when this weird sound came out of her.

Honestly, it sounded like… I don’t know. Someone dying.

Literally everyone stopped and looked at her.

She was very red, sweating profusely (she was fine maybe 10 seconds before),

and without even thinking, she just ripped her shirt off.

Up and over her head (not actually tearing the shirt or anything

but there wasn’t even a hesitation).

She was in her bra, and her whole chest was red like she was sunburnt,

and then she just turned and left the room and went into the kitchen.

Literally everyone watched her go.

It’s an open floor plan, so we watched her go straight into the kitchen, open the freezer,

and grab a handful of ice from the bucket and shove it in her bra

and stick her whole head into the freezer. Not one word from her.

She did all of this in this weird way like she wasn’t even in control of it.

It was just the only way to stop the burning.

Two of my friends apparently had grandparents who had gone through it

when they were younger. They just followed her into the kitchen,

both got paper towels and ran them under the tap with cool water.

They went over and started applying them to her.

I had never actually witnessed a hot flash before.

The one thing I did not even begin to think was

that she was lying about what she was going through,

and I most certainly wasn’t embarrassed.

My mother looked like she was being boiled alive from the inside out.

Even my youngest sister, who spent 98% of her childhood completely

mortified about everything wasn’t remotely embarrassed.

We just needed to know she was ok.

My mother literally walked half our downstairs, in a group of people 25+ large, girls

and boys mixed, in her bra. The only concern anyone had was if she was ok.

No one sexualized the situation, no one made her feel like she did anything wrong

(because she didn’t).

She just found out at that very moment, under no uncertain circumstances,

that she was in for a long few years ahead,

and that she most certainly did not like the feeling of her insides boiling.

She was trying not to die, she didn’t give two shits who saw

and she wasn’t thinking one thought about whether or not it was socially appropriate.

She just knew she thought she was burning to death in that moment.

You were in your home, these were adults invading your space

AND you had a shirt on under your shirt. If she has a problem,

she can hang out somewhere else or couch surf until

she stops thinking a woman is faking actual medical symptoms.

She is an adult, it’s time she stopped acting like a preteen,

hopelessly mortified that women have unpleasant experiences as a woman.

Do yourself a favor: keep the house five degrees colder than you ever kept it before.

This made my mother sane. She either would end up losing the shirt

OR would take up residence in the freezer after that.

She didn’t have to do both. This was before they had any real help for this either.

She just had to deal with it. The basically told her to drink cool liquids.

But her flashes were absolutely brutal.

From one daughter to another mother: your job is to get through it

without bursting into flames or k__ling anyone.

Your daughter has to learn to live with it or learn to work around it.

Nature doesn’t care if she’s embarrassed, and honestly, neither should you.

Apologize if you want to, but NTA for having a body

that did something completely natural that you cannot control.

Anyone trying to shame you for just simply existing

while being a woman in menopause should go to hell.

Oh, and talk to your doctor. They actually do have stuff that can help a little bit!

Good luck! You’ll get through it, and then you will be period, cramp and flash free!!

SallyJane5555 − For those of you who have never experienced it,

a hot flash can feel like a RIGHT NOW emergency.

It’s like being lit on fire from the inside, and the urge to strip is stroooonnnnggg!

These Redditors focused on the home ownership and age dynamics

Time-Examination2378 − Whoa whoa whoa…. Let me get this straight.

Your adult daughter told you off about what you were wearing in YOUR OWN house???

And then her friends, who were also in YOUR house, were rude about you

and she didn’t call them out on it??? And then she called you a liar? Rude rude rude. NTA!

I think it’s about time Becky learns some adulting skills.

Tell her to jog on to her own place where she can sweat as much

or as little as she wants and learn to keep her sweat shaming to herself!

🙄 Maybe you can tell I’m a menopausal lady with judgy teen daughters

so I’m there with you!

Although hopefully my girls will have grown out of this when they are 27!!!

🙀🙀🙀 Good luck, stay safe and if in doubt, duck and cover.

PushkinMage − I. N. F. O: is it your house or hers?

NTA if it's your house, maybe it's time Miss Becky finds somewhere else

to entertain her friends so her mom can feel comfortable in her own skin in her own house.

(edited after it was answered)

rathrowawydsabldsib − NTA. You would think at 27 your daughter

and her friends would have more interesting things to talk about than her mom in a tank top.

Maybe it's time they find somewhere else to hang out.

Evening-Tomatillo-47 − They're nearly 30, they can get a grip

These voices represent the NAH/Minority view

Novel_Fox − Curious why it was you had to take off your shirt in front of everyone?

Do you not a room you can to or somewhere private?

I don't think you're a ah but you said you were humiliated by the situation.

Seems like you could have stripped somewhere else no?

JeepersCreepers74 − NAH. I'm close to your age, I get it.

My guess is that you looked like a crazy woman ripping off your clothes

in front of these young adults and that it was that,

rather than specifically the act of taking off your shirt to reveal a tank top underneath,

that embarrassed your daughter.

She's not an AH for being embarrassed under the situation,

but you are not an AH for not caring about said embarrassment

OP reacted to sudden physical discomfort in her own home, not to create a scene. It ended up awkward, sure, but intent matters and this wasn’t done for attention.

Becky’s reaction seems rooted in social embarrassment, especially with friends involved, but calling OP a liar adds unnecessary tension.

Some will see this as an unfortunate moment blown out of proportion, others as something that could’ve been handled with more awareness.

Was this just bad timing, or is Becky overreacting to a harmless situation? How would you handle it? Share your thoughts below!
