in Social Issues

Sometimes, a simple moment of comfort can turn into an unexpected conflict.

OP was having a quiet night in when her younger sister came in after a bad dream, looking for reassurance and a safe place to sleep.

Wanting to help, OP made room for her without thinking much of it.

But what felt like a harmless, caring decision quickly became a problem when their mom walked in and reacted strongly.

Now, OP is left wondering how something so ordinary could be seen so differently. Keep reading to see how this situation unfolded!

not the actual photo

'Aiw for letting my 8yo sis sleep with my gf and i after she had a nightmare?'

I’m 18f, my gf is 17f and my sister is 8

My gf was staying the night due to some issues going on at home

and her and I sleep together.

My sister woke us up around midnight saying she had a bad dream

and asked if she could sleep with us.

My bed is quite big so we allowed her and I slept between them.

My mom woke us up yelling at my gf and I for sleeping with her

and said it was very inappropriate.

Neither of us think it was inappropriate especially

since we were fully clothed and I was between them.

Sometimes what feels normal and caring in the moment can look very different through someone else’s lens, especially when it involves kids.

In this situation, OP didn’t act out of anything inappropriate. She responded to an 8-year-old who was scared, needed comfort, and trusted her enough to ask for it. Letting a younger sibling sleep in the same bed after a nightmare is a very common, nurturing response.

The fact that OP positioned herself in the middle and everyone was fully clothed shows she was mindful of boundaries, even if she didn’t explicitly think about it that way at the time.

Where the tension comes in is perspective. From OP’s point of view, this was about comfort and safety. From the mom’s point of view, it likely raised concerns about boundaries, supervision, and what she considers appropriate when a partner is involved, especially since

OP is in a relationship and her sister is much younger. It doesn’t necessarily mean the mom thought something harmful was happening, but it may have triggered a protective reaction about situations she feels should be more controlled.

Psychologically, situations like this often come down to different interpretations of safety and boundaries, not intent.

Looking at the bigger picture, OP didn’t do anything wrong in terms of intention or care. But this is one of those situations where intent and parental boundaries don’t always align.

Her mom likely expects to be the one making decisions about where the younger child sleeps and who she shares space with.

This doesn’t make OP “inappropriate.” It just means she and her mom have different comfort levels, and the mom’s role is to set rules for the younger sibling.

At the end of the day, this was a moment of comfort, not misconduct. But in families, especially with younger kids involved, perception and boundaries often matter just as much as intention.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

This group views your sister’s decision to come to OP as a “good thing”

nyx926 − It is not inappropriate. Ask your mother why she thinks that way.

The best thing to do in family conflict like this is to ask questions.

Free_Solid9833 − Mom is just mad her daughter doesn't go to her for comfort

and protection. That's a her problem.

why0me − As a mom I applaud that you're taking care of your gf so young

And still loves your sister enough to let her crawl in when she's scared?

That's awesome Like does she not see how great it is that

when your sister go scared she ran to you? ? That's a GOOD THING

These commenters emphasize the innocence of the situation

Professional_Fix_147 − Not wrong. The sister is 8 years old, everyone was fully dressed,

little sister found it calming to have a loved one near her after a nightmare,

you weren’t doing anything inappropriate in the bed. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mean-Vegetable-4521 − Assuming you were both clothed, not wrong.

People are asking why sister came to OP. I think she assumed it was a sleepover party.

It's the sign of an innocent mind, and that's good.

Siblings often go to each other for comfort.

My siblings and I had a normal upbringing and did it all the time.

shelby20_03 − What? ? There’s nothing inappropriate about that. Like at all.

These users suspect OP mother’s overreaction may be rooted in homophobia

ON-Q − Not wrong. Honestly, as a fellow lesbian,

I think maybe your mom overreacted thinking

that there was a potential for "converting" your younger sister.

Even though we both know loving who we love is not a choice,

and we're born that way. I'd sit down with mom and plainly state:

Litte sister had a nightmare, she came to me to seek out comfort.

I do not know why she chose me instead of you,

but I offered her comfort and when she asked if she could sleep in the bed

with my girlfriend and myself I made the choice to say yes

and situate myself between them. Nothing inappropriate happened,

nor would it have happened. Next time she has a nightmare,

I will suggest she bother you instead.

Then sit down with your sister and tell her that while you enjoyed

being the one to provide her with comfort and care in her time of need,

that it upset your mom and that you need to respect the boundaries

she is providing for both of you.

That next time she has a bad dream, she can still seek comfort in your arms

as you will always be her big sister and be there to protect her.

But that after a few moments have passed allowing her to collect herself

from whatever may be scaring her, you want to talk through her nightmare,

take her to get a drink of water, to the bathroom and tuck her back into her own bed.

That you'd be happy (if you are) to sit near her

while she drfits back off to sleep and then go your separate way.

You didn't s__ualize the situation, but I fear your mom did.

And there are people who will gloss over your gender,

or hyper focus on it and state that you're trying to convert your sister

when you are simply being a great big sister to her by comforting her

in a time of need. Keep being awesome OP.

It is clear your sister searched for you for comfort for a reason,

she clearly isn't finding it with your mom.

maddasher − Sounds like your mom may have some hang ups. Possibly about your s__uality?

These users provide a more tempered “NAH” or “INFO” perspective

SharpestEagle − Your mum isn’t wrong, neither are you.

You just need to be aware of family boundaries, and respect them.

We know from case studies & from statistics

that child abuse is rarely perpetrated by strangers

but from people known to the child, or to the child’s family.

I’ve heard far too many stories of young people having sleepovers,

only to wake up to having unimaginable things done to them

WITH people in the room. In a response to another post,

you mentioned your mum has a history of SA that she made you aware of,

when you told her about your history.

Perhaps your mum’s trying to protect your sister, in a way that she feels she didn’t with you?

That’s something you should have included in the initial post for context …

and a glaring omission that you didn’t.

If there’s a history of SA in your family, it’s wise for your mum to do exactly what she did.

I don’t know the specifics of what occurred,

but I can only imagine her only desire was to protect her 8yo daughter

from possibly experiencing the same. If it was a friend, a platonic friend,

I would expect your mum to have a similar reaction.

RodentQueen_1997 − I suspect your mom has some SA trauma

she may not have discussed with you.

You did nothing wrong trying to comfort your little sister.

OP handled the situation based on comfort and care, not anything inappropriate.

An 8-year-old waking up scared and asking to feel safe is a normal moment, and OP made space for that while keeping clear physical boundaries.

From OP’s perspective, it was about reassurance, not anything else.

The conflict really comes from how the mom interpreted the situation, likely seeing it through a different lens and reacting emotionally rather than contextually.

That doesn’t automatically make OP wrong, but it does explain why it escalated so quickly.

At its core, this isn’t about what actually happened, but about differing assumptions and boundaries.

Was OP simply responding to a child needing comfort, or should more caution have been taken knowing how it might be perceived?
