Student Shares Notes All Semester, Then Considers Pulling Them an Hour Before Finals

in Social Issues

Collaboration only works when everyone actually participates, and that’s exactly where things fell apart for OP.

After putting in the effort to build shared study notes, this one was met with little to no response from classmates. The idea of teamwork quickly turned into a one-sided effort.

But just as the final exam approaches, the dynamic shifts. Suddenly, everyone is eager to use what OP created, raising questions about fairness and timing.

With the clock ticking, OP is left weighing a tough choice. Scroll down to find out what happened next.

Student considers removing shared notes before exam after others contribute nothing

'WIBTA If I took down my shared notes moments before the exam?'

Final is soon so I’ll be quick. I started up a study discord for one of my classes

and made a google docs to share notes. Thing is, no one else participated.

They didn’t add their own notes, didn’t respond to questions, nothing.

People joined but that was about the extent of their contribution.

It was so little; I’d completely forgotten I shared my notes at all.

Now we’re about an hour before finals and the discord is suddenly alive

with people saying they’re going to be using my notes (open note final).

Thing is, I’m kind of tempted to take them down.

I put them up there so that we could all work together and collaborate our work.

Not so that they could just use mine with little to no effort on their part.

But its so last minute and that would probably really mess some folks up.

So should I just let it go? Thanks

UPDATE: Hey, thank you for all the responses and rewards! It’s appreciated!

I was only expecting one or two comments to be honest.

I ended up taking them down because as some pointed out this was open notes,

not a group project and there was a non zero chance this could be seen as cheating.

I received no complaints for doing so. So either folks copied,

or it just wasn’t that big of a deal. Probably both!

Either way, all done and I’m pretty sure I did well so yay!. Thanks again and Happy Holidays!

Generosity feels great until it starts to feel like you’re the only one giving. In this situation, OP didn’t just share notes. He created an opportunity for collaboration, hoping others would contribute and build something together.

When no one engaged, that effort quietly turned into a one-sided contribution. So when people suddenly showed up right before the final, ready to benefit without having helped, it’s understandable that frustration kicked in.

The emotional core here is fairness. OP wasn’t trying to gatekeep knowledge, he was reacting to a lack of reciprocity. When effort isn’t acknowledged or matched, people often feel used rather than appreciated.

That’s why the sudden activity in the Discord didn’t feel exciting, it felt opportunistic.

From the other students’ perspective, though, it might not have felt as intentional. Some people procrastinate, some rely on last-minute prep, and others simply assume shared resources are there to be used.

They may not have seen it as “taking advantage,” even if that’s how it came across.

Psychologically, this kind of situation reflects what’s known as social loafing when individuals contribute less in group settings because they expect others to pick up the slack.

According to Psychology Today, this behavior is common in loosely structured group efforts, especially when accountability is low. People tend to engage only when there’s immediate personal benefit, which often shows up right before deadlines.

That insight explains why the Discord suddenly came alive. It wasn’t about collaboration, it was about timing and self-interest.

Looking at the bigger picture, OP’s decision to take the notes down wasn’t unreasonable.

He created the resource, and he had every right to control it. Especially since the original intent, collaboration, never happened. On top of that, his concern about academic integrity adds another layer that justifies the choice.

What’s interesting is that nothing really blew up afterward. No complaints, no backlash. That suggests something important: either people already had what they needed, or they weren’t as dependent on those notes as it seemed in the moment.

At the end of the day, OP didn’t punish anyone, he just stopped offering something that had become one-sided. And sometimes, stepping back from being the only one contributing isn’t selfish. It’s just recognizing your effort has value.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These users believe OP only responsibility is to OP own grade

fargoLEVY13 − NTA & repeat after me: Your grade is not my responsibility.

mort-er − NTA. Agree, take them down. Enjoy YOUR notes and good luck!!

BookishWorrier − Take them down now! Don't let people piggyback off your work

These folks believe that while OP have the right to take them down, doing so right before the exam will ruin OP reputation

MidnightMalaga − I know the overwhelming answer is that you wouldn’t be, but

I think YTA if you do this without warning right before the exam

when you know people are planning on using them.

It’s not an a__hole move to use a resource that’s offered to you,

even if you’re not also chipping in. Would it be nicer if they had? For sure.

Was it ever going to happen at the whole class level? Ehhhh...probably not.

Take the lesson from this, and only share notes with a small study group

where you know all the individual members are going to participate.

For now, it doesn’t cost you anything to leave them up and if they’ve been lazy

and not working independently, even having notes won’t help them do amazingly.

VivianCold − I'm gonna be honest, that's kind of an a__hole move.

I know from my study experience that sometimes you're the one to do the work

but sometimes you'll just be the one to take advantage of other people's.

Not everybody plans correctly for every exam and your notes

might be what saves somebody's ass.

And next time, that exact person might repay you with something similar.

Sharing stuff like that comes with the understanding that people might

or might not participate and you will definitely not make any friends by doing this.

Instead of "getting back" and be petty about the situation, just take it

as a learning experience and next time find a smaller group of more motivated students

who will actually help you out. Or just keep your notes to yourself all in all.

Btw, in my faculty it was pretty common for one person to write notes

to a specific class (because they wanted to) and then share them on a wiki-like page.

Over the years, a nice collection accumulated and many students

kept being remembered as life savers by the following grades.

I had both personally written a few of these notes

(usually for classes i understood particularly well) but also used many others.

And most of the time, we were very proud of the work we did and the fact

that we could make it easier for somebody else.

It created a nice community and group feel and eliminated a lot of the competitiveness

you might expect from students. Just cut each other a little bit of slack sometimes 😅

pingywen − NTA, but you're not making friends in the long run.

People will remember you as the guy that screwed them that instead of

the guy that was nice enough to put the notes out.

that aside, IT WOULD BE HILARIOUS.

sawdeanz − NAH. YTA

I guess I'm going against the grain here.

Look, I get that you feel a little miffed that you put in effort and nobody else did,

but it sounds like you posted them without much expectation from people.

How were they supposed to know what you're arbitrary expectations are?

I feel like when you post stuff like that online it's with the understanding

that people may or may not participate.

But it's really cool that people are now using it.

I feel like you can either leverage this in a way to get more participation in the future,

or you can just learn not to put in that effort in the future.

To take them down now is just an act of pettiness. I'm sure some of

these people are just lazy assholes, but there could also be other students

that legitimately studied the material and still found your notes helpful.

edit: NAH because OP was afraid of getting in academic trouble.

I don't think the other students are assholes, though. So changed to NAH.

These users point out that even with OP notes, lazy students likely won’t do well

Jazzlike_Humor3340 − Ask the teacher. They said the test was open notes.

Does the teacher feel comfortable with everyone using your shared notes

if they didn't contribute, or would they consider that helping them cheat,

because they're supposed to use their own notes?

If the teacher doesn't want people using shared notes,

ask if they'll send an email saying all shared notes must be taken down before the test.

Honestly, your notes won't do anyone much good if they are just going to download

and use them without doing the work of

making their own notes, reviewing them, organizing them, etc.

They won't know where to find information, or how you think up tricks to remind you of class.

fishydogs − I mean, I used to send notes to the entire class.

People were always really thankful. I'd like to think it helped some of them.

I think it's better to do that sort of thing without expecting anything back,

because you'll just be disappointed.

As for the judgement, it kind of depends how well you communicated your intentions,

if you simply shared the notes then honestly Y W B T A imo,

even though it's fully within your right. I also don't think it would be worth it considering

it would probably just p__s a lot of people off/annoy them/make it difficult for them to pass.

Which sure, isn't your problem but it could be frustrating dealing with people's attitudes.

OP wasn’t wrong to feel frustrated after putting in all the effort while others stayed passive until the last minute. The original intent was collaboration, not carrying the entire group, so the sudden rush to benefit from that work without contributing understandably felt unfair.

At the same time, pulling the notes right before the exam could have blindsided people who had come to rely on them, even if they didn’t earn that reliance.

In the end, OP’s decision wasn’t just about fairness, it also tied into concerns about academic integrity, which makes the choice more grounded than impulsive.

Was this a justified reclaiming of effort, or a last-minute move that crossed into pettiness? And in group settings like this, where does generosity end and being taken advantage of begin?
