She Wanted a Pool Party for Her 40th Birthday, but Her Friend Was Shocked She Expected to Use Someone Else’s Backyard

Most people have no problem helping friends celebrate a milestone birthday.

Bringing a gift? Sure.

Helping decorate? Absolutely.

Even hosting a small gathering for close friends isn’t unheard of.

But one woman was left stunned after discovering that a friend expected to throw a 40th birthday pool party at her house, complete with dozens of guests, many of whom were complete strangers.

What made the situation even stranger wasn’t just the request itself. It was the way it unfolded.

The husband approached her husband instead of speaking to her directly. The request kept resurfacing after an initial rejection. Then, after the couple firmly said no, a surprising series of phone calls revealed that the birthday girl herself had apparently been orchestrating the entire thing behind the scenes.

By the end of the drama, what started as a simple request for a venue had become a lesson in entitlement, boundaries, and why some people mistake generosity for unlimited access.

Here’s what happened.

A Backyard That Had Become the Neighborhood Favorite

The woman and her husband belong to a close-knit group of local families. Their children attend the same school, they live in the same neighborhood, and during the warmer months they regularly gather for casual pool days.

Out of the five families in the group, only two have pools.

Whenever Vancouver’s unpredictable weather cooperates, invitations are sent out and friends come over to swim, socialize, and enjoy the afternoon. By all accounts, the gatherings are relaxed and welcoming.

Most guests respect the arrangement.

One family, however, had a history of pushing boundaries.

According to the homeowner, this particular couple frequently seemed eager for pool invitations. They had previously asked to use the pool when the family wasn’t even home. Their children routinely ignored house rules and wandered indoors despite being told that pool guests should remain outside and use the outdoor bathroom facilities.

The behavior had already caused some frustration.

Then came the birthday request.

The “Surprise Party” That Wasn’t Really a Surprise

The husband of the soon-to-be birthday girl approached the homeowner’s husband with a proposal.

Could they host a surprise 40th birthday party?

The guest list wasn’t small.

In addition to their regular friend group, approximately twenty additional guests would be invited. People the homeowners had never met.

The husband immediately felt uncomfortable.

Not only was the request substantial, but it was made publicly in front of other people, making it harder to decline without feeling awkward.

He attempted a polite deflection, mentioning scheduling uncertainty and work obligations.

That didn’t stop the pressure.

The friend then suggested they could use the property even if the homeowners weren’t there.

That suggestion raised even more concerns.

At that point, the answer was effectively no.

Yet the issue refused to die.

At another gathering, the same friend was overheard encouraging the husband to “convince his wife” to agree, despite the wife standing nearby and perfectly capable of answering for herself.

That detail struck many people as especially strange.

Why ask the homeowner’s husband repeatedly instead of speaking directly to the actual co-owner of the property?

The answer became clearer later.

The Plot Thickens

After the homeowners formally declined, the situation took an unexpected turn.

A few hours later, another friend called with fresh information.

Apparently, the birthday girl had been complaining about the rejection and immediately began searching for another friend with a pool who might host instead.

That revelation shattered the illusion that this was a surprise party.

According to multiple conversations, the birthday girl was fully aware of the planning efforts and may have been encouraging them from the beginning.

When confronted via text, she reportedly denied nearly everything.

Her explanations changed repeatedly.

First she claimed she knew very little about the proposed party. Later she suggested she shouldn’t have been involved because it was her birthday. She also denied plans to invite large numbers of additional guests despite evidence suggesting otherwise.

The more details emerged, the less believable the story became.

What bothered the homeowner most wasn’t even the request itself.

It was the secrecy.

She had spent time with the birthday girl socially just days earlier. If they were truly friends, why not simply ask directly?

Instead, the entire plan seemed designed to pressure her husband into saying yes while avoiding a direct conversation with the person most likely to say no.

Why Boundaries Matter in Friendships

Friendships often thrive on generosity.

People share resources, celebrate together, and help each other through life’s milestones.

However, psychologists note that healthy friendships also require respect for personal boundaries. According to Psychology Today, boundaries help protect relationships by clearly defining what individuals are comfortable sharing, giving, or allowing. When boundaries are ignored, feelings of resentment and distrust frequently emerge.

Experts emphasize that respecting a boundary means accepting a “no” without repeated pressure, guilt, or attempts to work around the decision. Persistent efforts to change someone’s answer can damage trust and create unnecessary conflict.

That insight feels particularly relevant here.

The issue wasn’t simply a birthday party.

It was the assumption that access to someone’s property, pool, and home was available upon request, even after hesitation had already been expressed.

The repeated attempts to secure a different answer transformed what could have been an innocent question into something much harder to ignore.

A Friendship Tested by Entitlement

Most people would agree that asking isn’t inherently wrong.

Friends ask favors all the time.

But there is a difference between asking once and refusing to accept the answer.

The homeowners had already spent weeks hosting gatherings, opening their property to friends, and sharing their space generously.

That generosity was apparently interpreted as an invitation for something much larger.

Ironically, the very behavior that made them good hosts may have encouraged expectations that eventually crossed a line.

And once those expectations surfaced, they became difficult to overlook.

Here's what Redditors had to say:

Many pointed to the enormous liability involved with hosting forty people around a private pool, particularly when half the guests were strangers.

a-boring-millwright − That’s a lot of liability. Also likely a lot of people who will hear “no people in the house” and translate that to “the pool is the toilet”.

OpenMindedEthic − NTA for saying no. If anything happens to them or one of their guests on your property they could sue you. It’s a liability.

PossibleIntern7509 − Asking to have it at your place even if you were unavailable was a crazy ask. I would stop inviting that couple over since they seem to feel...

ConsistentParking424 − NTA The "friend" asked your hubby in front of others to try and guilty hubby into saying yes, that is an AH move. Asking again is a double...

You know if you do host the party that the kids and guests will be wandering about your house "looking for the bathroom". Plus no one will really clean up,...

Others found it outrageous that the friend suggested using the property even when the owners wouldn’t be home.

needabook55 − NTA. And it may be time to set boundaries with this family. Next time you invite them over, let them know that if their family, including kids go...

You don't need to deal with their entitlement.

CiaraTDesigns − NTA - I wouldn’t host a pool party with a bunch of people I don’t know coming in and out of my house. You may want to give...

bronwyn19594236 − Just tell him the pool is not available for people you don’t know. Go low contact with him. When his wife finds out, tell her you are uncomfortable...

UpInSmokeMC − Tell them to get an Airbnb with a pool

Nta

Several readers argued that the repeated requests after an initial refusal revealed a sense of entitlement rather than genuine friendship.

MaySeemelater − NTA. It may be time to stop inviting that family over at all, seeing as they were also ignoring the rules you had set out regarding not going...

canvasshoes2 − NTA, at all. 40 people? Yikes!

Respect for another person’s home. Respect for their boundaries. And respect for their right to decline a request without being pressured into changing their mind.

A good friend accepts a “no” and moves on.

A less considerate friend keeps looking for ways around it.

So was this simply an innocent request that got blown out of proportion, or did the birthday couple reveal exactly how entitled they had become after years of enjoying someone else’s hospitality?
