Losing someone you love is never easy, but losing them without warning can leave a person feeling completely lost. There is no time to prepare, no final conversation, and no chance to say goodbye before life changes forever.

The original poster (OP) lost his wife suddenly after a medical emergency at home. After 24 years together, he was suddenly faced with making decisions she had never written down, including what should happen to her remains.

With family members having different wishes and no clear plan in place, he turned to Reddit for guidance during one of the hardest moments of his life. Read on to see the advice and support he received.

A husband lost his wife unexpectedly and was left trying to honor her wishes without knowing where to begin

'Wife passed away yesterday and I don't know where to go from here.'

My wife died suddenly from an aneurysm yesterday. It was quick, so much so we didn't have a chance to say goodbye.

She was there one minute scoring plexiglass for a project, and then suddenly on the floor.

I called ambulance and they declared her dead at hospital.. They gave me a few days to "get her affairs in order", since its the weekend.

I know she wants to be cremated AGAINST her families' wishes, and to be buried in Ireland,

where her grandparents were from, or Scotland, where I'm from, and in our family grounds.

We're both in our mid-40's so neither of us had really planned anything for it. She doesn't have a will, nor does her family have anything held for her.

It was just... far too quick.. I appreciate any advice you can offer, especially if you've been through a similar situation.. Thank you all.

EDIT: I'm so incredibly greatfull for all of your messages of support and advice. I am taking steps because of you folks that I didn't consider beforehand.

I'm attempting to go through the messages one by one, and theyr'e getting many, so it may take me a bit to get to you, but I will.

Thank you again from the bottom of my heart.

EDIT 2: Some of you have been asking about how long we've been married. She and i have been married 24 years. It would've been 25 in October.

EDIT 3 (1/6, 22:52CST) I spent the day getting paperwork together and getting a funeral home, etc.

She IS going to be cremated with a stone here in the US.

It was a compromise between myself and her parents, though the placement of her ashes is still in discussion. Thank all of you, from the bottom of me heart.

Some losses arrive with a warning, giving people time to prepare, say goodbye, and slowly adjust to what is coming. Others arrive in a single moment and completely change the shape of someone’s life. Sudden grief is uniquely painful because the person left behind is not only mourning the loss itself but also the future conversations, plans, and ordinary moments that will never happen.

In this situation, the OP was not just trying to arrange a funeral. He was trying to make decisions about the person he loved while still processing the shock of losing his wife without a final goodbye.

The emotional weight of this situation comes from the conflict between grief and responsibility. After 24 years of marriage, the OP’s wife was not simply a partner; she was someone woven into his daily life, memories, and identity. Being asked to handle practical matters immediately after such a sudden death creates an impossible situation where emotions and logistics collide.

At the same time, he was facing pressure from his wife’s family, who had their own wishes for how she should be remembered. The difficulty was not only deciding what happens after death, but honoring the person she was while navigating the expectations of the people who also loved her.

A helpful perspective comes from grief expert Dr. David Kessler, who explains that grief is not a problem to solve but an experience people must move through. He emphasizes that sudden loss can create a sense of disbelief because the mind struggles to accept a reality that changed without preparation.

Kessler also notes that rituals and meaningful decisions after death can help survivors create a connection with their loved one while beginning the healing process.

This insight helps explain why the OP’s decisions carried so much emotional significance. Cremation, burial location, and memorial choices were not simply practical arrangements. They represented his wife’s identity, her wishes, and the life they shared together.

His desire to honor what she wanted came from years of knowing her, while her family’s wishes likely came from their own love and grief. In moments like this, disagreements often happen because everyone is trying to hold onto the person they lost in their own way.

The OP’s update shows an important part of grief: sometimes there is no perfect solution, only choices that respect the relationships involved. Finding a compromise that honored his wife while allowing her family to participate demonstrated compassion during an incredibly painful time.

Ultimately, sudden loss forces people to handle responsibilities they never expected to face. The most important thing is not creating a perfect farewell, but creating one that reflects the person who has passed and provides comfort to those left behind.

The OP’s focus on honoring his wife’s wishes shows the depth of their bond, and his willingness to listen to others shows the strength required to navigate grief with love rather than conflict.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors advised OP to write things down, take care of himself, and follow his wife’s wishes

rthomasucf − I'm sorry. I've gone through this nhself and it's a whirlwind.

First, get a notebook to start writing everything down in, with grief you tend to forget a lot of things and you will need to make lists.

Second, follow her wishes and don't feel pressured by the family.

Life is going to feel very heavy and confusing for a while, take care of yourself and allow yourself to feel ALL of the things.

Obvious_Amphibian270 − OP, hubby and I were both 46 when he was killed in an accident. I like the suggestion someone made about keeping a notebook.

My memory was shot at the time. Writing things down helped. As for cremation, your in laws don't get to make that decision. Do what brings you comfort.

My in laws were big on the whole wake, funeral and burial.

I HATE that "stuff". We compromised. Hubby was cremated. They paid for the wake and funeral. They even rented a coffin for it.

It was what they needed. I just wanted it to be over with.

(funny side story, hubby was late for EVERYTHING in life. His body almost did not make it to the funeral home before the wake.

I thought it was hysterically fitting. ) We had the funeral home split his ashes. In laws paid to have their share buried in the family plot.

I have my portion in a container that is not an urn sitting on a shelf. Sorry this got so long. Short answer is to do what brings you peace.

_SmileCrocodile_ − I’m so sorry for your loss. Please take the next few days to grieve. When it’s time to start planning I would follow your wife’s wishes.

They were hers and that’s what matters when it comes to final wishes.

This group offered practical guidance about paperwork, funeral arrangements, legal rights, and handling accounts after a spouse’s death

AmyinIndiana − I am so deeply sorry. You must be devastated. I read some question of practicality in your post, so I’m going to go more practical with my answer.

Since you’re married, she didn’t really need a will. The search term you want is “intestate” - that just means “without a will. ”

So a good starting point is to Google “spouse died intestate in (your state).”

However, since the law has you covered, I wouldn’t worry about any of that for the next couple weeks.

Focus on getting through each day. Plan a memorial for her, preferably with the help of her family.

Since she’s being cremated, perhaps more of a wake than a funeral in a funeral home.

My family owns a wedding venue and they do quite a few memorials for people who aren’t religious and prefer to avoid the traditional funeral home.

The funeral home that handles the cremation will help you write and publish an obituary.

If there’s a family member you can designate to handle notifying people, you should.

Calling dozens of people to say “she died” and having to recount how is awful. Let someone help you with that if possible.

For the next month, put any mail with her name on it aside and when you feel stronger call those companies and let them know she’s gone,

and any business will need to be transferred to your name (I’m thinking bills, etc).

You may need to get into her email to manage other accounts, depending on how things are set up in your household.

You’ll want to inform the bank, mortgage company, etc.

but you might as well wait until you have a death certificate to do that, which the funeral home will handle and you only need like 3.

I wasted a bunch of money getting way too many. Most entities just need a copy of it, not an original.

In my state they’re $20 each. Finally, get yourself into counseling.

What happened to you was traumatic and horrible, and it robbed you of the whole future you had planned.

That’s going to take some work to process. Give yourself time with a professional to help you come to terms with it. You’re likely in shock now.

Expect for it to hit you hard in a couple weeks, and maybe plan for some support to be on standby for when it does.

(It was about two or three weeks when my dad died - I was his primary carer - the shock was nice, looking back. It kind of buffered the emotions.

Then it wore off and I was really bowled over by how raw everything really was.

Our brains protect us so we can do what needs to be done. ) Again, I am so very sorry.

Tess408 − You are the husband so her family should not be able to make any decisions for her cremation and burial.

Don't apologize or overexplain to them, just say that she was very clear about *her* wishes and hopefully they will back off.

You will end up needing the death cerificate more than you think for paperwork.

As you start dealing with closing out accounts, keep that handy.

If she had a life insurance policy through work that will help with the loss of income and funeral services.

If she had any credit cards with a balance, close those out first so you aren't charged interest.

If there was any debt you didn't know about, get specific legal advice, you may not have to pay it.

A lot of people don't think about their own health much. It's okay to reach out to your doctor and ask for an antidepressant and/or some therapy.

There are support groups for this and it may help to meet others who have been there.

Try to eat healthy even when you don't want to, and if you don't want to do that, try to at least eat something.

When friends and neighbors offer help, food, or a shoulder to cry on, take them up on it and don't feel bad about it. I'm really sorry for your loss.

crazy_relic5725 − I am so sorry for your loss. Similar situation mys3lf. Breath. Call a friend or a family member.

Sharing with someone helps. My husbands mother tried to plan his funeral. You are her next of kin.

No one else can tell you what to do with your wife. Call a funeral home in your area.

They will come to you and they will guide you in the steps you need to take and help you with paperwork. You will get through this. Give yourself time.

These commenters encouraged OP to honor his wife’s final wishes rather than letting family pressure change decisions

Nsr444 − So sorry for your loss. Must be a roller coaster right now. Can the hospital help you with next steps?

bellesearching_901 − Hey, I’m so sorry this happened. I’d follow your wife’s wishes. Sending you a virtual hug.

No-Focus2310 − The family knew the girl, you knew the woman. I hope you find some comfort and peace in respecting her final wishes.

I hope you have a support system in place for yourself and don’t forget to eat!

wonkiefaeriekitty5 − I'm so sorry for your loss OP. My advice for what it's worth, is to honor her wishes. You could ask for 2 urns and go to Scotland...

Do you think families should prioritize a person’s final wishes above traditional expectations? How would you handle difficult decisions after losing someone without warning? Share your thoughts below!
