Woman Admits She Hates Her Brother, But The Real Story Broke Readers’ Hearts

in Social Issues

One emotional argument revealed years of hidden resentment inside a struggling family. A young woman shared that her 19-year-old brother has profound developmental disabilities requiring constant supervision. Growing up, much of her childhood revolved around his needs, from changing plans to avoiding everyday activities that might trigger a meltdown.

After years of feeling overlooked, she finally admitted to her mother that she hated her brother—a confession that sparked an emotional debate about caregiving, burnout, and whether siblings should be expected to sacrifice their own lives. Want the full story? Read the original Reddit post below.

A young man admitted hating his disabled brother after years of putting his own life aside

'AITA for telling my mother I hate my special needs brother?'

For context, my brother is 19, and is diagnosed with autism and learning disabilities,

meaning he doesn't communicate in any form other than repeating things from TV, and doesn't understand much socially.

I've not once had a conversation with him. I've grown up with everything revolving around his needs and demands,

from going home from school early as a kid to get him, to listening to him shout every two minutes at home daily.

Since I've spent all my life around it, it doesn't particularly bother me.

Recently, since he's an adult, the laws in my area mean that if he was taken into hospital, and then a mental hospital,

he'd be out of reach from my parents and anything could happen. With him being prone to stripping in public during meltdowns, it's likely.

My mother constantly seems stressed from looking after him.

I dislike him because he's inconvenienced my life so much, I cannot go out and see friends at all,

I cannot say certain words or he'll shout and throw things, I cannot tell him to stop making noise or he'll do it more.

My parents abide by his every demand because they can't argue with him.

One night it simply got too much, and during an argument I told my mother that I hate my brother.

She still asks for me to accommodate everything for his needs. AITA and what do I do?

Sometimes the deepest guilt comes from emotions people never wanted to feel in the first place. Loving a family does not always mean loving every circumstance that comes with it. When someone spends years adapting their entire life around another person’s needs, resentment can quietly build alongside compassion. Those emotions often exist together, even when admitting them feels cruel.

In this situation, the OP was not simply expressing hatred toward a sibling with disabilities. They were releasing years of emotional exhaustion that had never been acknowledged. Growing up in a household where nearly every routine, rule, and opportunity revolved around one family member can leave siblings feeling invisible.

While the brother’s autism and learning disabilities clearly require extensive support, the OP’s frustrations stem from the sacrifices that became expected rather than chosen.

Their mother’s constant requests for accommodation likely come from survival rather than favoritism, yet that does not erase the emotional burden carried by the other child. The argument became less about the brother himself and more about a lifetime of unmet emotional needs finally reaching a breaking point.

Many people see stories like this through the lens of disability, but there is another perspective that often receives far less attention—the experience of siblings. Society frequently praises siblings for being patient, helpful, and understanding, while unintentionally overlooking the grief that comes with growing up in a caregiving environment.

Feeling resentment does not automatically mean someone lacks empathy. In fact, suppressed resentment often develops because people believe they are not allowed to express it. The OP’s words were painful, but they may have reflected accumulated burnout rather than genuine hatred toward a vulnerable brother who lacks control over his condition.

Psychologist Dr. Joshua Coleman, a family psychologist and author, has written that difficult emotions within families should not automatically be treated as evidence of a lack of love. Instead, emotions such as anger, resentment, and disappointment often signal that important personal needs have gone unrecognized for too long.

Likewise, Verywell Mind explains that sibling resentment in families with high caregiving demands can emerge when one child’s emotional experiences are repeatedly overshadowed by another’s care needs. Acknowledging these feelings without judgment is often the first step toward preventing deeper emotional harm rather than creating it.

Viewed through that perspective, the OP’s outburst appears less like an attack on a disabled brother and more like the language of chronic emotional overload. The mother’s stress is completely understandable, as caring for an adult with significant support needs can be physically and emotionally exhausting.

At the same time, expecting one child to continually absorb those pressures without recognizing their own losses creates another kind of hardship. Both realities can exist at once. Compassion for the brother does not require dismissing the sibling’s pain, just as acknowledging the sibling’s struggles does not diminish the challenges faced by the parents.

The healthiest path forward may begin with recognizing that no one in this family seems to be thriving. The brother needs ongoing care, the parents appear overwhelmed, and the OP is carrying years of resentment that finally surfaced.

Rather than asking who is right or wrong, the more important question may be whether every member of the family has been given space to have their own needs seen, heard, and valued.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters agreed OP is NTA and should prioritize moving out and establishing independence from a parentified role

MochiPryncess − That’s a really difficult position to be in, and it’s not your fault. If you’re old enough, it might be time to move out.

If you’re not, it may be time to reach out to family and…yup. Move out.

Your parents are likely burnt out and not realizing how it’s impacting you, but that doesn’t make it okay. NTA.

Sorry-Visit-6743 − I have autism, and I'm going to say NTA on this one.

While your brother obviously has difficulties it's 100% possible to work on problem behaviors,

and it sounds like your parents just give in to keep the peace instead of trying to help him improve.

I'd highly suggest looking up the phrase "glass children," this refers to kids that have a disabled sibling

and are basically looked through (like glass) and ignored because the disabled sibling takes up all the time and attention.

If you're able to move out, I'd suggest doing so, and if possible, start seeing a therapist

because being raised as a glass child can be stressful, painful, and even traumatic.

Agree with reaching out to family members besides your parents as well.

Any-Box-678 − You need to leave, go live on your own or go off to college.

Willothewisp2303 − NTA. You deserved a normal childhood,  but instead you got to be a second caretaker for your brother.

Set yourself up to live independently, be that going to college or trades, and live your life.

Cat_Stitch − NTA - I hope you're able to move out soon and live your own life,

go to college or a trade school or start a job, make friends, and live without everything being dictated by his needs.

Meanwhile, your parents need to file in court for medical and legal guardianship/conservatorship of their adult child

(so they can be notified and involved if he is ever arrested or put on an involuntary hold),

get him into day programs, get respite care, and start looking at residential programs for when they're no longer able to manage him themselves.

Edited, still getting used to the new phone's keyboard

Revolutionary_Bag518 − OP I’m going to say this as someone on the spectrum, you are in no way obligated to deal with your brother or

even take care of him after your parents die. They are HIS parents and they’ve failed him monumentously and they’ve failed you.

You need to get out of there as soon as you can and take control of your own life. NTA

These users emphasized that OP’s frustration is with parental mismanagement rather than the brother himself, encouraging focus on the real source of stress

minteemist − NTA.   But from reading your post, it seems less than you hate your brother perse,

but rather that you hate how your parents have been so incompetent in teaching him and forcing you to accommodate his bad behaviour.

Your parents have neglected your needs and let you down. Your brother is just the byproduct of their mismanagement.

It might be more productive going forwards to direct you frustration at the real problem: your parents and their choices.

SartorialDragon − Ooof. Parents are TA. Your parents were responsible for two things: 1. Helping your brother become an adult.

Autistic children need to learn to become autistic adults. To the best of their ability. Pampering him isn't the solution.

2. Making sure their other child isn't parentified. You deserved a childhood aside from always revolving around him.

I understand that you resent him, though resenting him isn't a good state to stay in. Do you still live with them?

Can you move out, focus on your own life soon? I think it'd do you good!

This commenter noted the impossible position of the parents and brother, advising OP to show some understanding while still protecting their own well-being

cbm984 − As the mother of a special needs child, NAH. Nobody wants to be in this situation.

Not your parents, not you, and certainly not your brother. It’s no one’s fault, just a lose-lose situation.

I’m sure your parents would give their left arms to ease your brother’s struggles so they could give you more attention.

I’m sure they’d give their left arms just to be able to communicate with him.

I can only imagine what it’s like to know that the smallest thing (a noise, a statement, etc)

could mean a sleepless night for everyone or a violent meltdown that needs to be handled immediately for who knows how long.

Your parents likely want you to accommodate him because if you don’t they’ll need to handle a brutal situation while they’re already hanging by a thread.

But that doesn’t mean you need to be completely selfless.

Every kid deserves attention, kindness, and patience from their parents

and I’m sure those things are hard for your parents to give you given the circumstances.

Do what’s best for you and don’t feel bad about it. Whether it’s moving in with another family member, moving away for college,

or refusing to visit your brother once you leave.

If you can see a therapist, I’d highly recommend it because you deserve to talk through all this with someone.

But I will say, although they aren’t blameless, try to give your parents some grace.

They are in an impossible situation and I’m sure they probably know they’re failing you

but don’t have the ability to make things better as long as your brother lives with them.

What do you think? Was her emotional outburst understandable after years of sacrifice, or should she have expressed her feelings differently? Share your thoughts below.
