Construction Started At 7 A.M. Every Day, Then One Morning Pregnant Woman Lost It

A home renovation next door became unbearable for one exhausted mom-to-be. Nine months pregnant and barely sleeping, one woman found herself waking every weekday at 7 a.m. to the sound of heavy drilling from the neighboring house.

The renovation had already stretched across three months, and she claimed the work even continued on Sundays, when local rules prohibited noisy construction.

After another sleepless night, she finally marched next door in her pajamas—and the conversation quickly fell apart. Want the full story? Read the original Reddit post below.

One emotional confrontation followed months of frustration and lost sleep

'AITA for yelling at my neighbour for ruining my sleep during my pregnancy?'

I (29F) am currently 9 months pregnant, and as anyone who has been pregnant knows, getting comfortable and actually sleeping is an uphill battle.

The house next door used to belong to a sweet old lady who sadly passed away recently.

Her niece and the niece's boyfriend inherited or bought the place, and they are planning to move in.

However, they've been doing massive, top-to-bottom renovations for the last three months.

Stripping the house of its walls and floors and completely starting over.

Because they are doing all the construction themselves with the help of their friends and associates, it feels like it's dragging on forever.

The biggest issue is that they start drilling, hammering, and making massive noise at exactly 7:00 AM

on the dot every single weekday and some days don't stop until 8pm.

In Ireland there is no legal "quiet hour" law here, but City Council guidelines allow noisy construction from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays.

So, technically, their weekday morning start time is allowed.

However, the drilling is right against my bedroom wall, and it wakes me up instantly, shaking the room.

Between the pregnancy insomnia, nausea, and general exhaustion, losing those early morning hours of sleep is absolutely breaking me

when most nights I'm only actually managing to fall asleep around 2/3am.

To make matters worse, they have also been keeping the heavy construction going through Sundays and bank holidays.

According to DCC rules, noisy work is strictly not allowed on Sundays and public holidays. They’ve completely ignored this, meaning I get zero days of rest.

Yesterday, after another weekend of noise and a terrible night of barely sleeping, the weekday drilling started at 7:01 AM. I snapped.

I went over there in my pajamas and confronted the boyfriend. I told him that they have been doing this for months,

it’s incredibly inconsiderate, and that as a pregnant woman, I desperately need sleep.

I asked if they could at least push the heaviest drilling back to 8:30 or 9:00 am and reminded him that they shouldn't even be working on Sundays.

He was incredibly dismissive.

He pointed out that on weekdays they are legally within the 7:00 AM guideline and said they have a strict schedule to finish the job.

He completely brushed off the Sunday stuff and basically told me it’s not his problem.

In my sleepless emotional state I ending up calling him a few unsavoury names and walked away.

My partner thinks I was justified because of how long it's been going on and how exhausted I am,

but a friend told me I might be the a__hole here because they are just trying to get their home finished,

and trying to restrict their hours stretches out the time line. I'm also torn because I'm due to have my baby in a few weeks

and I doubt they'll be finished construction by then and will be constantly waking up my newborn when she tries to sleep..

AITAH or is there anything else I can do?

There comes a point when exhaustion changes the way people experience the world. Lack of sleep does more than create fatigue, it reduces patience, heightens emotions, and makes even small frustrations feel overwhelming.

When someone has been physically and mentally depleted for weeks or months, reactions that seem disproportionate on the surface often reflect accumulated strain rather than a single bad moment.

In this situation, the OP was not simply angry about construction noise. She was coping with the final weeks of pregnancy, chronic insomnia, physical discomfort, and the stress of knowing that rest was becoming harder to find each day. The renovations next door became the symbol of everything she could no longer control.

At the same time, the neighbors were working within permitted weekday hours to renovate a home they hoped to move into, though continuing noisy construction on Sundays, if it violated local regulations, understandably added another layer of frustration.

By the time she confronted them, months of interrupted sleep had likely transformed a reasonable request into an emotional outburst. The yelling was not ideal, but neither was it surprising.

Many people judge conflicts like this by asking who was technically right. A more interesting question is why both sides felt unheard. The neighbors may have viewed the project as temporary and necessary, while the OP experienced every morning as another reminder that her body and environment were working against her.

Pregnancy often increases sensitivity to stress because the brain is already managing significant hormonal and physical changes. What sounds like ordinary construction to one person can feel almost unbearable to someone whose sleep has already been reduced to only a few fragmented hours.

Understanding that difference does not excuse harsh words, but it explains why empathy can disappear when chronic exhaustion takes over.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Michael Breus, widely known as The Sleep Doctor, explains that sleep deprivation significantly impairs emotional regulation, making people more reactive, less patient, and more likely to interpret stressors as overwhelming.

Verywell Mind similarly notes that chronic sleep loss affects mood, judgment, and the ability to cope with everyday challenges, particularly during periods of major physical stress such as pregnancy. These effects are not signs of personal weakness but predictable responses to prolonged exhaustion.

Viewed through that perspective, the OP’s confrontation seems less like a dispute over construction schedules and more like the result of depleted emotional reserves. Her request for a slightly later start reflected a genuine health need, while the neighbors’ desire to complete renovations efficiently was also understandable.

The real breakdown occurred when both sides focused on defending their own position instead of recognizing the pressures the other was experiencing. Once the conversation became dismissive, frustration quickly replaced any chance of compromise.

Sometimes there is no perfect solution when legitimate needs collide. Yet acknowledging another person’s circumstances without abandoning reasonable boundaries often creates better outcomes than relying solely on legal rights.

A home renovation will eventually end, but treating neighbors with empathy, even during difficult moments, offers the best chance of preventing a temporary conflict from becoming a lasting one.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters acknowledged the neighbors’ behavior is frustrating but suggested reporting only if they break legal rules and managing the rest patiently

fuzzyizmit − If they are doing on prohibited days, call the authorities on it. Other than that, you have to deal with their assholery until they are finished.

ei_laura − What do you mean, is there anything else you can do?

You can report them for the Sunday violation - noting that they will likely know you did so, whether you want to deal with any pushback from that is up...

Other than that though, while they are being incredibly inconsiderate, if they’re operating within the permitted hours

that’s unfortunately going to be something you’re going to need to manage

(noise machine, headphones, sleeping when you can and potentially adjusting your routine to facilitate that.

You really should have gone and spoken to them calmly a long time ago rather than letting it get this far and exploding,

I’m not sure what other advice you’re looking for?

This group felt OP is YTA for losing their temper instead of calmly communicating, emphasizing polite discussion and legal channels first

Oyster49 − YTA you never went to them and asked them start later than they were legally required to as a favor to you in your current condition.

Instead, you went over there as though your pregnancy was their problem and you were entitled to a later start time. Of course they were defensive.

Now, you may get them to stop working on Sundays and bank holidays, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they continue to start at 7 am every day.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if they are less than forgiving about the all hours of the night noise maker you’re about to have.

tiredgummybear − YTA. Living next to people sucks, but we all have to do it. It comes with people renovating.

You could have talked to them for 3 months but instead decided to go and yell and curse. Sundays you can complain about, weekdays, tough.

He said they’re on a strict schedule, you have no idea why and probably didn’t care to ask.

Why should they care you’re pregnant? Consideration goes both ways.

EmmalouEsq − YTA. The world doesn't stop because you're pregnant. You just have to deal with it.

Just like you'll have to deal with a new born who might have also have sleep issues.

Being 9 months pregnant sucks, I know first hand. Although how you sleep at all without getting up to pee like 17 times at night, I don't know.

I hope everything goes well when the time comes and there is a happy, healthy baby and mother!

this_is_an_alaia − YTA if you'd politely gone over and asked them to not have construction on Sunday I'd have a different answer.

But you yelled at them for doing construction they're allowed to do. I get it, construction sucks.

Not sleeping sucks. But the world doesn't stop because you're pregnant and they're in the middle of a job.

You can't expect workpeople to incur costly delays because you can't sleep.

youshallneverlearn − Sorry, but YTA. Your inconvenience and pregnancy is one thing, but what is legal is what matters.

The only thing you can do, since it's illegal to do works on Sundays, is to call the police when that happens, or weekdays after 6PM.

I'm quite surprised why you haven't done that for so long. ..

Seventhventure − YTA You had 3 months to strike up a conversation with your neighbours, and let them know the impact their noise was having on you.

Instead you went nuclear on one random morning and swore at them. No wonder they refused you!

You do know being pregnant doesnt entitle you to behave like this? You should apologise to your neighbour and attempt to start over.

Its the most likely way to get consideration out of them, and do you really want to be at war with people you share walls with?

These commenters suggested acknowledging the pregnancy but approaching the situation with clear, respectful dialogue rather than letting frustration build

What-Is-Your-Quest − White noise in noise canceling headphones in the room farthest from the construction?

Was this the 1st time you confronted them about it?

I think going off on them with no warning after stewing about it for weeks would make YTA. I feel for you though.

You should apologize though & kindly let them know that in your condition you just snapped

but that you're also worried about the noise messing with the baby's sleep.

d1zz186 − YTA. Why would you leave it and get angrier and angrier until you yell at someone about something they had no idea was a problem?

Seriously what happened to having a simple conversation and finding a solution together?

What I’d do Go back, apologise for your emotional state, say you’re hoping to have a conversation about times and weekends and take it from there.

If he refuses to talk, and he continues doing noisy work on prohibited days then report him. Signed - Tired mum of 2 under 3.

What do you think? Should the neighbors have voluntarily adjusted their schedule out of kindness, or was the expectant mother asking too much from people simply renovating their home? Share your thoughts below.
