in Social Issues

Everyone has different fashion preferences, and most couples occasionally disagree about what looks good. Those conversations usually end with one person saying, “Wear whatever makes you happy.” Unfortunately, not every disagreement stays that simple.

The original poster says her boyfriend has repeatedly mocked the way she dresses, even going so far as to exclude her from plans because he disliked her outfit.

After losing their jobs, the couple has been living under her family’s roof while he remains unemployed, but another humiliating argument has made her wonder whether she has finally reached her limit. Scroll down to see why this relationship has the internet debating where honest opinions end and emotional manipulation begins.

A woman considered ending her relationship after her unemployed boyfriend repeatedly belittled her in public

Boyfriend Mocked Her Outfit In Public, Then Expected To Keep Living Rent-Free
not the actual photo

'WIBTAH if I asked my boyfriend to move out at the end of the month for criticising me?'

So I’ve (25f) been with my boyfriend (25m) for a little over 4 years now.

For some context we worked at the same company, but recently got made redundant so I started working at a bar

(I worked there previously so it has been nice to go back), but my boyfriend has been unemployed.

Yesterday, we went out with some old colleagues from the company we got made redundant from as a catch up.

It was around 34 degrees so very hot and I chose a flowing skirt and black tank top with a green sort of splash design on it (my aunty gifted...

My boyfriend chose a thick black woven jumper and black jeans to wear.

So when he saw my outfit the first thing he said was “ you aren’t seriously wearing that, come on that is indoor clothing”

I said I was happy with my outfit and I regularly wear these items outdoors.

Then he made a disgusted face and said “we are going to \*fancy area in my city\* you can’t go like that you look awful”

I was immediately offended by this because I thought my outfit looked nice and I had spent time picking it out.

I asked him to stop commenting on my outfit and we left the house. But on the way there he wouldn’t stop making rude comments and remarks.

The one I found most offensive was he said the green pattern on my top looked like a child had vomited on me.

This was so demoralising and I was in a bad mood by the time we met with our coworkers and I had to shake it off.

On the train ride home he was also drunk and he made a compliment saying I was “…very beautiful BUT”.

I knew it would be some sort of backhanded compliment and thought he would mention my outfit again.

However then he started saying how I’m so talented and he doesn’t understand why I’m wasting myself and my potential working at a bar.

I said that we just got made redundant and that I enjoy working there.

Then he was trying to say I’m wasting my life and talking about the bar I work at as though

It’s like so rubbish and I’m letting myself down by not striving for more.

So my problem with this is he was saying it quite loudly and many people on the train could hear and were looking and although at first

glance it potentially sounds like maybe a caring concerned partner, I think actually underlying in it was almost like he was trying to put me down.

And trying to humiliate me publicly for working in hospitality?

A lady from the train eventually spoke up and told him If im happy that should be all that matters.

I was so grateful to hear that as I was getting very embarrassed and worried that everyone on the train probably by that point thought I was a loser..

These events were uncomfortable for me. Going back to the clothing thing quickly:

Now this is not the first time he’s done something like this!

Last year we jointly planned a cute double date with his friend to just go into the city to get some food and watch football etc.

it was a casual outing and I chose my outfit which was a white shirt with a printed hippo artwork on the from and my dark green dungarees

which have some flowers on and things. He saw my outfit and demanded I changed saying I looked horrible again and in the end

he said i was uninvited and he went on his own and made excuses to his friends for my absence.

I think this was also rude as the outfit was not outrageous and it was a casual hangout.

I’ve worn this outfit out other places and people often compliment the pieces asking where I got them!

So today I spoke to him about his behaviour and said I wasn’t comfortable with him being unkind and speaking this way about me and what I choose to wear.

I said it’s my body and he doesn’t have any right to treat me that way because of what I choose to wear.

He said that’s ridiculous and he doesn’t see why I should be allowed to wear horrible outfits to his things he’s planned.

He said he should be able to comment as much as he likes because he doesn’t feel like his point is getting across as clearly I refuse to change.

I told him after being told to stop following his first comment he should’ve stopped. He tried to argue more about it but I was getting very frustrated

so I said I needed to go to bed and that he can just not invite me to any of his hangouts if he thinks my fashion sense is so...

Now he wants to talk about it again tomorrow no doubt to try and strongarm me into agreeing to his perspective.

Previously I saw things like this as smaller issues and not a reason to break up,

but as I’m getting older I’m finding it very hard to imagine being with someone who essentially is trying to break me down every opportunity they get.

Like I didn’t think his outfit was the right choice for yesterday, but instead all I said to him was “ that jumper is very thick wont you be hot...

And when he responded saying it was fine I left it at that. Like maybe he’s embarrassed by me!

But even then that’s no reason to talk to someone the way he spoke to me and he should’ve stopped when I asked him to stop the first time.

So this is where I’m wondering WIBTAH because since being made redundant he hasn’t been able to pay rent.

We were made redundant at the beginning of May. He’s staying in my family home so it’s me and my mum here.

My mum said the only reason she’s letting him stay is because of our relationship which makes sense.

He said he’d probably be able to pay half of the rent by now but he still hasn’t found a job so has no money at all.

He’s also been quite depressed about being made redundant so I’m not sure he’s been putting much effort into looking for a new position

until very recently (this week).

His parents won’t send him any money either and if he left here I assume he’d have to go back to live with his mum who lives around a 2hr...

I was thinking I could just tell him we can’t afford to keep him without paying rent anymore and that he has to move out at the end of the...

and then we wouldn’t be together anymore. Is that wrong to do???

I just feel like it’s the easiest way to be free of his bad energy and kind of guarantees he will be away from me.

Respect rarely disappears all at once. More often, it erodes through repeated moments that are easy to dismiss individually but painful when viewed together.

A critical comment here, a public embarrassment there, another conversation where one person’s feelings are ignored over time, these moments stop feeling like disagreements and start feeling like a pattern that changes how someone sees themselves.

In this situation, the OP’s distress does not stem from one harsh opinion about an outfit. Throughout the relationship, her boyfriend repeatedly criticized her appearance, continued after being asked to stop, publicly belittled her career, and even excluded her from a social outing because he disliked what she planned to wear.

When she calmly explained that his comments hurt her, he did not apologize or acknowledge her feelings. Instead, he argued that he should be free to keep criticizing her until she changed. That response shifts the issue away from fashion entirely.

It suggests that the disagreement is no longer about clothing, but about whether one partner believes they have the right to override the other’s personal choices.

An interesting psychological perspective is that criticism and control are not always expressed through shouting or obvious insults. Sometimes they appear as repeated attempts to reshape another person’s identity under the belief that “I’m only trying to help.” Genuine feedback leaves room for disagreement.

Control often does not. The key difference is whether the other person’s autonomy is respected after they have clearly expressed a boundary. In this story, the OP repeatedly said she liked her clothes and wanted the comments to stop. The criticism continued anyway. That persistence is what makes the interaction feel emotionally draining rather than constructive.

Relationship researcher Dr. John Gottman identifies contempt and persistent criticism as two of the strongest predictors of relationship dissatisfaction because they communicate superiority rather than mutual respect. Healthy couples can disagree about appearance, careers, or lifestyle choices without attacking each other’s character or dignity.

Verywell Mind similarly explains that controlling behavior often includes repeated criticism, attempts to dictate personal choices, and dismissing a partner’s expressed boundaries. Over time, these patterns can gradually reduce confidence and create an unhealthy imbalance in the relationship.

Viewed through that lens, the question becomes larger than whether the boyfriend should move out. The OP is considering whether the relationship still provides emotional safety. His unemployment and depression deserve compassion, and losing a job can deeply affect someone’s confidence and behavior.

However, those struggles do not excuse repeatedly humiliating a partner or refusing to stop after being told that the comments are hurtful. Compassion and accountability can exist together. One does not erase the need for the other.

Ending a relationship because a pattern of disrespect has become unacceptable is different from abandoning someone during a difficult period. If the OP decides the relationship is over, asking him to move out of a home where he is staying because of that relationship is a practical consequence rather than a punishment.

The healthiest long-term relationships allow both people to feel accepted for who they are, not constantly pressured to become someone else to earn kindness.

Check out how the community responded:

These users highlighted the boyfriend’s hypocrisy and praised OP for maintaining her style and confidence

Regular_Boot_3540 − YWNBTA. It's rude and controlling of him to criticize what you wear.

And it's really weird that he put you down for working at a bar when he's not working at all.

sassy_doilies − NTA. He clearly has certain expectations of what you should do/be/wear and it will only continue or get worse.

It feels like he’s trying to make you less attractive, and/or tear you down to make you not think you can leave.

Prove his unemployed self wrong. Both those outfits sound absolutely adorable, btw!

CharieRarie − NTA. Your boyfriend sucks, kick him out. Also your outfits sound ridiculously cute.

AnnNonNeeMous − Kick. Him. To. The. Curb. … and wear your best outfit while you do it!

This group emphasized that the boyfriend’s behavior is abusive, manipulative, and unlikely to change, urging a breakup

MysteryCrapybarbra − This man doesn't like you. He treats you terribly, insults you to your face, and humiliates you in public.

All the while scrounging off of you. You deserve better. Break it off with him and make him move out.

You don't need that kind of useless man in your life. No relationship is better than a bad relationship.

Edited to add: YWNBTA for making him move out. But you will be TA to yourself if you don't break up with him.

ThatsUh_dam_shame69 − I want you to reach deep deep down and find your anger girl, I’m talking primal anger,

that the patriarchy has taught you to suppress, and I want you to leave this pile of s__t right now.

Call your mom, call your friends, call a co-worker, and just leave him to get his things and have him leave effective immediately.

Obviously this means break up with this fool. He’s not going to change, most men’s brains are too weak to open or change.

He is a prime example. RUN AND BE FREE! NTAH!

Traditional-Ad2319 − Why are you living with a man who treats you like crap?

kkrolla − 1st - no one on the train thought you were a loser. They thought he was an obnoxious pr*ck for demeaning you.

To the point where someone felt they had to stand up for you. It says everything about him.

2nd he doesn't get to tell you what you can or cannot wear as you are not his child and have your own mind and style.

He doesn't have to like it but he better respect it and you. He's trying to disguise his controlling and condescending personality as knowing more than you.

Don't just ask him to move. Dump his condescending unemployed a**, get some therapy so you can recognize your strengths

and also recognize do*ches like him in the future so you don't end up with Mr. Know-it-all again.

Also, no one thought he was trying to be nice or was a caring bf. Everyone, except maybe you,

which is why therapy would do you well, saw a jerk bf who was belittling his gf and thought he was a sorry POS. Trust.

This group noted the financial and household imbalance, stressing that his mooching and lack of contribution justify eviction

Top-Bit85 − NTA. He is too good to work at a bar but not too good to mooch off you and your mother.

Time for him to go to his own home. Your whole house will be lighter!

Actual-Deer1928 − NTA at all. He insults your job while being unemployed and not contributing to rent?

I bet he’s not doing the majority of the cooking/cleaning while unemployed either. And if he’s so embarrassed by you, you’re doing him a favor.

Someday you will find someone who makes you feel good about yourself, who appreciates your style and thinks you’re great just the way you are.

Every minute with this loser is just a waste of time.

Would asking him to move out be a reasonable consequence, or should unemployment and depression change how much patience a partner is expected to give? At what point does criticism stop being honesty and start becoming emotional erosion? Share your thoughts below.
