Customer Makes Wells Fargo Mail A Useless Statement Every Month Out Of Pure Spite

in Social Issues

Most people close their accounts and move on after a bad experience with a company. Others decide that if a business wants to put profits ahead of people, they can live with a tiny inconvenience that costs them money month after month.

The original poster watched his father lose a longtime job after repeatedly warning his employer about a problem that management refused to address. Angry over how everything unfolded, he cut nearly all ties with the company but held onto one account for a very specific reason.

Then he found a small way to make the bank spend money on him every single month without breaking any rules. Read on to see how his quiet act of revenge has lasted for years.

A man kept one unused credit card open to make a bank pay for monthly statements

'I force Wells Fargo to mail me a statement that will always be zero?'

I saw a story earlier today and it reminded me what I did to Wells Fargo a few years ago.

My dad worked for Wells Fargo for over 20 years on the call center side.

He managed a team that forecasted call volume for all call centers Wells Fargo had.

They had trouble staffing over night with Americans, so they opened a call center in the Philippines. Their day shift is our night shift. Perfect, right?

That was until Wells Fargo did what they do best and got greedy. They wanted to maximize their profits.

So they slowly started closing down American offices and opening new ones in the Philippines.

My dad warned them over and over and over again that if they continued this practice, they were going to have scheduling issues.

Shockingly, they ignored his warnings.

Well he ended up being right and Wells Fargo ran into huge staffing issues. What was his reward for being right?

He was laid off. I was so mad at them I cancelled all my accounts except my credit card.

The reason I didn’t cancel my credit card is because it’s my oldest line of credit and I didn’t want my credit score to be impacted.

I went online and made sure any reoccurring charge/subscriptions were on my new accounts at a local credit union.

While I was online, I also switched statements delivery from “E-Delivery” to “mail delivery”.

Wells Fargo now pays to send me a monthly statement for a credit card I never use. It’s been almost two years now. S__ew you Wells Fargo.

When people feel powerless after witnessing someone they love being treated unfairly, they often look for small ways to reclaim a sense of control. Those actions are rarely about the practical impact they create. Instead, they become symbolic expressions of justice, allowing someone to feel that they have not simply accepted what happened.

In this situation, the OP’s decision to receive paper statements was never really about a monthly credit card bill. It was tied to the frustration of watching a parent dedicate decades to an employer, provide repeated warnings about a business decision, and ultimately lose his job after those concerns proved accurate.

Closing nearly every account represented a practical response, while keeping the oldest credit card protected the OP’s financial health.

Switching from electronic statements to paper delivery became a personal protest, a small inconvenience directed at a company the OP believed had prioritized short-term savings over employee expertise and loyalty. Whether the financial impact on the company was meaningful mattered less than what the act represented emotionally.

A different perspective is that symbolic acts of resistance often serve the person performing them more than the organization receiving them. People sometimes assume revenge is about causing equivalent harm, but psychology suggests that many acts of “petty revenge” are actually attempts to restore fairness after an event that cannot realistically be undone.

The OP could not reverse the layoff or influence the company’s decisions. Choosing paper statements created a ritual that reminded them they still had agency over one aspect of the relationship. The emotional benefit came from exercising choice where they once felt helpless.

Psychologist Dr. Ty Tashiro, who has written extensively about how people respond to unfairness and disappointment, explains that perceived injustice often motivates behaviors designed to restore a sense of balance or personal control, even when those actions have little objective impact on the original situation.

Verywell Mind likewise notes that people frequently engage in symbolic coping behaviors after stressful or unfair experiences because these actions can reduce feelings of helplessness and reinforce personal agency. While such behaviors may provide temporary emotional satisfaction, they rarely resolve the underlying source of the hurt.

Viewed through that lens, the monthly paper statement was less a financial attack on a large corporation than a personal reminder that the OP still had choices. At the same time, it is worth recognizing that large organizations are unlikely to notice a single customer’s delivery preference.

The lasting value of the decision therefore lies not in the cost imposed on the company, but in the emotional closure it may have provided after watching a family member experience an outcome that felt deeply unfair.

Sometimes the smallest acts of protest are not intended to change the world. They simply help people reclaim a sense of dignity after circumstances reminded them how little control they had. Whether those gestures are worthwhile depends less on their practical effect and more on whether they allow someone to move forward instead of remaining consumed by resentment.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

This user offered a practical tip to prevent account closure due to inactivity

yoyoyohan − Make sure to put 10 cents of gas on it every now and then so they don’t close the card for inactivity.

The credit card processing costs more than 10 cents anyways

This group shared personal negative experiences with Wells Fargo, describing lost funds, inaccessible accounts, and bureaucratic difficulties

YSoSkinny − Wells Fargo is like the worst bank ever. And there's some stiff competition.

I had an account with them and didn't realized it had an "inactivity fee" (I know, my bad for not reading the fine print, but f__k them).

I ended up losing everything in that account.

FamousLetterhead8992 − I hate Wells Fargo. My work banked at a place that was bought out by Wells Fargo.

I did AR and added up, stamped the 100-150 checks we received at the first ten days of the month,

the bookkeeper and bookkeeper assistant prepped them for deposit, locked up the bag and I went in to the bank to deposit it.

One time, actually the LAST time I went to make a deposit there, the lines were really long and i was really surprised.

Well, they were verifying that each person who was depositing a check - they called the bank of each check,

made sure the amount of each check was in the account of the check writer… On every customer. And I was no different.

They refused to give me a deposit receipt after 5 minutes of phone calls. I called the office, told head bookkeeper what was happening

and she said to grab all of the checks and cash, put it back in the bag and come back to the office.

They (Wells Fargo) didn’t want me to do that, but refused again to give me a deposit receipt.

So back to the office I went, loaded deposit bag in hand.

The head bookkeeper called them, had a long conversation with them and the decision was made to pull OUT of Wells Fargo

and do banking business with another, local, bank. Not just my division, the WHOLE COMPANY, all offices, all divisions.

Our Catholic Diocese is in the top 20 in size in the United States. That’s a lot of fricken money that Wells Fargo lost.

That was every church, school and other divisions. I, myself, laughed my ass off because they had screwed me over 7 years before.

Heh heh heh heh heh…. . still laughing to this day!

Im_jennawesome − Wells Fargo is traaassshhh. I used to have a bank account there but after two back to back incidents, I closed it.

First incident: went to the giant 24-hr grocery store near me to do my big shop.

I'm a night owl so it was like 130am, way faster and easier to get in and out at that time.

I got to the register, scanned all my stuff, swiped my card. .. Declined. Huh? I had like 10k in that account.

This store was also unique in that they ONLY accepted cash, check or debit. NO credit cards. My debit card was my only option. Tried again, same thing.

Called Wells Fargo and was told they they had taken it upon themselves to decide that my card had been lost or stolen and had deactivated it days prior.

I was like um. What? I never reported it lost or stolen, in fact I haven't contacted you guys at all in months. Wtf?

Guy on the phone was an ass about it, yelled at me for being 'too stupid to understand' and then hung up on me.

I was PISSED. Ended up having to leave all my groceries and go home empty handed.

2nd incident: This was only a couple weeks after incident #1. Stopped at the bank on my day off to withdraw cash for something specific.

Idr what it was for but I remember I needed like $800 or so.

They flat out refused to give me my money and told me the maximum they would 'allow' me to withdraw on any given day was like $3-400.

I was like excuse tf out of me? I have over 10k in that account.

It is MY money that was earned and deposited BY ME. Tf you mean you won't 'allow' me to withdraw it? !

Escalated to manager, they still wouldn't budge. So I said OK bet.

In that case you can just close out my entire account right now and hand me a check because you will never see a penny from me again.

So they closed my account and handed me a check for the full 10k+.

I turned around and walked that check straight into a credit union and have been there ever since with no issues. F__k Wells Fargo.

These commenters focused on the bank’s mishandling of sensitive situations like POA accounts, social security deposits, and state-mandated procedures

Unlikely-Lab-658 − In 2020, after we took my FIL in to care for him, we went into Wells Fargo to close his account.

We had the Power of Attorney in hand. They told us we had to make an appointment to talk to someone about it.

We couldn't just talk to somebody right then and there. We make an appointment for the following Monday.

We arrive 15 minutes early, and wait and wait and wait. Finally 30 minutes after our appointment time,

The jerk that had been standing around schmoozing for the last 45 minutes came over to help us.

No apology for making us wait. He saw us waiting that entire time, and decided his time was more important than ours.

We told him we wanted to close the account. It also still had my late MIL's name on the account, and they would not let us close the account.

He scanned in the POA, MIL's death certificate, and a copy of the last statements we had. Told us we couldn't close the account.

Gave us some stupid b__lshit reasons, and we kept saying to close the account. We left after an hour of listening to his b__lshit.

They even refused to take MIL's name off the account.

The only thing he did do was change the address of mailing statements to our home instead of where FIL used to live.

The account had a zero balance the entire time. Statements still come, every month like clockwork, even though my FIL passed away a year ago.

F__k Wells Fargo. They will probably still be sending statements long after my husband and I have passed away.

CaptainDudley − My sister has trouble with money, and lives from one SS check to the next.

Submitted all her bills to Wells Fargo along with the check to pay them. Big mistake.

They first debited her account (insufficient funds), then deposited her check,

then fined her big bucks for the overdraft which put her back to insufficient funds, and fined her again. Utter garbage behavior.

This is what people mean when they talk about poverty being expensive.

I had a much healthier account with them but closed it immediately after I heard about this and moved to a credit union. Never looked back.

Haunting_Incident_41 − Reminds me of a time a lady was trying to deposit money and they kept asking her for her ID.

Reasonable enough, they weren't budging at all. The lady had explained they never asked before and her other bank doesn't, it's not a withdrawal but a deposit.

The teller said it's because there's been fraud with people's accounts and its been a new "state" implementation.

Note. My credit union asks for my phone number only for deposits.

I looked it up, the reason Wells Fargo asks for an ID, is because there's been fraud committed at their bank before. BY WELLS FARGO!

They were opening and closing accounts, on people's behave and moving money.

This group emphasized excessive fees and predatory practices, encouraging switching to more customer-friendly institutions

kdp4srfn − I left WF years ago after realizing it was literally costing me money every month to even have a savings account.

The “monthly maintenance fees” for both my checking account and savings account were far more than

I earned with their insulting interest rate, something like 0.18% if I remember right.

The branch manager came hustling over when I asked to withdraw all my funds from both accounts, asking me why I was “leaving them”

after over 15 years as their customer. I told him I could receive every service they were charging me for,

plus a few more, for free by switching to the credit union across the street.

He didn’t have any response to that. I left a small amount in my checking account just in case,

since I knew it would take some time to switch all my subscriptions and automatic payments,

and they drained that dry with their monthly fees too. Higher fees, of course, since I no longer met their “minimum balance” requirements.

The last thing low-income people need are penalties for being poor, but all these moneygrubbers see is a vulnerable population

with limited options so “Hey! Let’s suck those last nickels right outta those loser’s pockets! ” Bastards.

delulu4drama − F__k Wells AND Fargo! 🤬

This user added a practical tip for handling unwanted mail or statements from the bank

p-graphic79 − Nice. If you write return to sender on the envelope, they have to pay for it twice.

Is this clever long-term pettiness, or simply an amusing ritual that helps someone move on from a frustrating experience? Have you ever made a small decision that felt far more satisfying than its actual impact? Share your story below.
