Couple Gets Upset After Friend Refuses to Host Their Unsupervised Child Again

Most children test boundaries from time to time, and most adults understand that accidents happen. However, when expensive belongings are involved, many people expect parents to take responsibility instead of hoping nothing goes wrong.

The original poster says an eight-year-old family friend regularly runs through the house, ignores instructions, and handles anything within reach while his parents laugh it off as harmless energy.

After watching him nearly knock over several costly electronics, the poster decided enough was enough. Rather than risk a future accident, a new boundary was set that has left longtime friends feeling hurt and unwelcome. Keep reading to decide whether that request was fair.

A homeowner banned friends’ unruly child after he nearly destroyed expensive electronics

'AITA for asking my friends not to come over my place with their kid anymore?'

I have a couple of friends, we know each other from our fourteenth. They've helped me through tough times and I don't want to lose touche with them.

The problem is their son who is 8. I don't expect a youngster to sit quietly all the time since I recognize that children are noisy.

But he wants to take everything in his hands, runs around, touches items on the shelves and seldom responds when told to stop.

Usually, my friends laugh and comment on how energetic he is,

They gently warn him to halt if I ask him to be more cautious, but he ignores them and nothing occurs. And that's all the time.

When they last came to see me, he was racing around close to the TV stand, knocked the controller,

almost dropped my Xbox, which I purchased a month ago, and nearly collided with the TV.

That would have caused damage worth hundreds of dollars, so I was afraid.

I asked my friends straight out who would pay if he broke something.

They gave vague answers, like don’t jump to the worst case scenario, he’s just a kid, but nothing about their accountability here.

Basically it meant that they won’t pay.

I’m not a greedy person, but I don’t wanna spend on new electrics just because people can’t make their own child listen to them.

So I said though I love seeing them all, but I don’t want them to come to my house with their child anymore.

We can meet at their place, at a cafe, at the park anywhere if they want to take him with, but not at my house no more.

They got offended and said I'd basically banned their child. Now we have a tense relations. AITA?

Friendships often become more complicated when people’s lives move in different directions. One person may build a home around quiet routines and valuable belongings, while another builds a life around raising an energetic child. Neither lifestyle is wrong, but conflict can arise when expectations about responsibility and boundaries are never clearly shared.

In this situation, the OP’s concern was not that an eight-year-old behaved like a child. Running, exploring, and testing limits are all common at that age. What changed the situation was the combination of repeated risky behavior, ineffective supervision, and uncertainty about who would accept responsibility if expensive items were damaged.

When the child nearly knocked over an Xbox and television, the OP asked a practical question about accountability. Instead of receiving a clear answer, the parents minimized the possibility of damage. That uncertainty understandably left the OP feeling responsible for protecting belongings in a home where the child’s behavior had not changed despite repeated reminders.

A different psychological perspective is that this disagreement is less about parenting styles than about perceived responsibility. Many parents become accustomed to the unpredictability of young children and mentally discount near misses because they happen so often without serious consequences.

Someone who does not have children, however, may view the exact same situation as an unacceptable financial risk. Neither perception is necessarily irrational.

The problem begins when one household’s tolerance for risk is assumed to apply inside another person’s home. Respecting boundaries sometimes means recognizing that different environments require different expectations.

Developmental psychologist Dr. Laurence Steinberg has written that children learn self-control gradually through consistent limits and adult guidance rather than through reminders alone. When expectations are not consistently reinforced, children naturally continue testing boundaries.

Verywell Mind similarly explains that healthy boundaries protect relationships by clearly communicating what is and is not acceptable, especially when shared spaces and personal property are involved. Boundaries are not punishments; they are agreements that help prevent resentment from building over time.

Viewed through that lens, the OP’s request appears focused on preserving both property and the friendship. Rather than ending the relationship, alternative places to meet were offered, including the parents’ home, parks, and cafés.

That distinction matters because the issue was not the child’s presence in general, but the inability to safely manage his behavior in one particular environment. At the same time, hearing that their child was no longer welcome in a friend’s home would understandably feel painful to the parents, even if the intention was practical rather than personal.

Strong friendships often survive difficult boundaries when both sides recognize that protecting a home and valuing a friendship are not mutually exclusive. A child can be welcomed as a person while certain environments remain unsuitable until everyone involved feels confident that both safety and responsibility are being shared.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors backed OP’s boundaries, saying parents should control their child

JaeliaPebblex − NTA. IMO they are offended because you boundary set makes thier lack of discipline visible. Stay your ground.

Vera_Carterr − NTA. You didn't ban their child from your life. Instead, you just set limits around your house

when they failed to accept responsibility for any damage. That makes perfect sense.

Flat-Replacement4828 − NTA. This is a pretty basic thing. If they could actually watch their child, you wouldn't have to set this boundary.

NectarStar_04 − Boundaries aren't punishments. Your home doesn't have to double as an indoor playground.

Strong_District_5894 − NTA Heaven forbid they take responsibility for their kid. I wouldn’t let them come over either.

This group criticized poor parenting and parents refusing accountability

SilkenHalo_3 − NTA. Sometimes parents dont realize that their kid seems energetic and fun only to them, and they just block out serious conversations

Fun_Ticket2476 − Look, they don't know how to control their child in other people houses. The child has no home training.

If they want to be emotional idiots who refuse to look in the mirror then so be it.

DeborahSimmons52 − NTA. Unfortunately a lot of parents are entitled and think that their kids can do anything they want.

I see such cases not for the first time and also have such people in my friends circle.

They also don't wanna take any accountability for what their kid is doing. Awful parenting methods.

JMLKO − We’re living in a time of the shittiest parenting ever. Parents value being friends with their children, not preparing their kids for life outside of the house.

This commenter agreed with OP but suggested meeting elsewhere to avoid damaging the friendship

A9J9B − NTA but also not smart. You could have just planned no more meetings at your placem whenever they want to meet you just say

"yes, i can come by your place" or "great, let's go to the park" or whatever. Don't offer your home.

But by telling them that you don't want their kid around (even though I'm completely with you on this) you obviously angered them.

What do you think? Was asking them to meet somewhere else a fair compromise, or did the homeowner unintentionally make the situation more personal than necessary? Share your thoughts in the comments!
