Couple Uninvites Complaining Guests After They Call the Wedding Too Much Trouble

Weddings can be expensive for both the couple and their guests, which is why honest communication is important from the start. If someone cannot make it, most people would rather hear a polite decline than a reluctant yes filled with complaints.

That is exactly the situation facing the original poster after chasing one couple for their RSVP. When the response finally arrived, it included far more criticism than excitement about the celebration.

Feeling that their guests clearly did not want to attend, the couple responded in a way that has sparked a heated debate over whether they went too far. Scroll down to decide who handled the situation worse.

'AITAH for telling my guests, it’s better they don’t come to the wedding, after they complained about our wedding too much?'

We are getting married in less than two months. Our RSVP-Deadline was a month ago and everyone responded our RSVP, but one couple.

We really had to hound them, to get any kind of answer from them.

Yesterday they sent us a message, telling us, they are free to come, but alongside the reply, they sent us a long message,

how cumbersome and expensive it is, to attend our wedding and how tiring the weekend for them will be and how they probably retreat

to their Hotel Room for most of the day and stay for the ceremony and part of the dinner, but retreat to their room for the rest of festivities.

We were taken aback, because we are paying for everything. Food, Drinks, Parking, we are also paying for everyone’s accommodation, a very nice Lakeside Hotel.

There biggest expense would be to pay for the Gas for the 4 hour drive to the wedding and back (they have a car).

They also complained about the Dresscode (we have Black Tie), but they both own clothes that would fit the Dresscode,

so they wouldn’t have to buy new ones anyway. But they complained about that too.

We read the message and basically told them, that if coming would be so tiresome for them, it is better not to come.

We said that we aren’t mad at all, if someone can’t make it or doesn’t feel up to it and there are no hard feelings, but basically uninvited them.

(I know it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things budget wise, but each guest costs us around 600 bucks

and I didn’t feel like spending 1200 bucks on people, that don’t event want to be there)

They are now angry at us and refuse to speak to us and we were thinking that maybe we were a bit harsh. Were we the A**holes?

One of the simplest gifts someone can offer is showing up wholeheartedly. Weddings are not only celebrations; they are invitations to share an important milestone.

That is why it can feel especially hurtful when someone accepts an invitation while simultaneously listing all the reasons attending is an inconvenience. The disappointment often comes less from the decision itself than from the message it sends.

In this situation, the conflict was not really about a four-hour drive or a black-tie dress code. The couple had already delayed responding to the RSVP, requiring repeated follow-ups before finally replying with a detailed explanation of how expensive, inconvenient, and exhausting the weekend would be.

At the same time, the hosts had arranged and paid for accommodations, meals, drinks, and parking, significantly reducing the guests’ financial burden.

Reading those complaints, the engaged couple concluded that attendance felt more like an obligation than a celebration. Their response, saying it was perfectly acceptable not to come, appears to have reflected the guests’ own description of the situation rather than introducing a new conflict.

A different psychological perspective is that people often underestimate how much emotional meaning RSVP decisions carry. Guests may believe they are simply being honest about logistical concerns, while hosts interpret those same comments as a judgment on the importance of the event itself.

Interestingly, the hosts did not appear to punish the guests for declining. Instead, they removed what they believed was an unwanted obligation. The misunderstanding arose because each side viewed the conversation through a different lens: one saw practical complaints, while the other heard reluctance and resentment.

Relationship researcher Dr. John Gottman has written that successful relationships depend not only on honesty but also on expressing concerns in ways that preserve goodwill and respect. The manner in which feedback is delivered often matters as much as the content itself.

Verywell Mind likewise explains that healthy boundaries include allowing people to decline invitations without guilt, while recognizing that others are equally free to adjust their own expectations based on those decisions. Respect works best when it flows in both directions rather than creating obligations through resentment.

Viewed through that lens, the hosts’ response seems less like retaliation and more like an attempt to align everyone’s expectations. If attending truly felt burdensome, removing that pressure was a reasonable option. At the same time, the wording may have landed differently than intended.

The guests may have hoped to vent about the travel while still expecting reassurance that their presence was deeply wanted. Instead, they received acceptance of the very possibility they had repeatedly described. Neither side appears to have fully anticipated how the other would interpret the conversation.

Celebrations are rarely remembered because every guest attended. They are remembered because the people present genuinely wanted to be there. Sometimes the kindest outcome is allowing people to decline gracefully, while remembering that accepting an invitation with visible reluctance can unintentionally diminish the joy the occasion is meant to celebrate.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These Redditors believed the guests wanted extra perks and were upset their manipulation failed

dragon34 − Aww the ungrateful people planning to use their free hotel room as a personal retreat instead of celebrating

with you laid it on too thick and will have to pay for their own weekend getaway.   Too bad.   So sad.   Nta

Profession-Unable − NTA, sounds to me like they were fishing for you to pay their gas costs or something and now they are mad that it didn’t work.

PatchEnd − nta. not harsh, just not playing their game. if YOU are paying for everything, they were going to use this as a personal vaca and NOT to celebrate...

they were just telling you this before hand so that you would know why they aren't around.

they wanted you to think it's a hardship, when really they wanted a free vaca.

Coygon − They wanted you to beg them to come. They wanted you to think this was such a real hardship

that you'd offer something special to make up for it, like an extra-large hotel room or a paid spa visit.

And tgen they'd probably still complain once they were there, either to wheedle still more out of you or just to make you

feel grateful they were willing to sacrifice so much to be there.   Now they're angry at you because you didn't fall for it. NTA

These commenters said wedding guests should RSVP politely instead of complaining

Adelucas − NTA. Your wedding should be a time of celebration.

You've got enough to do without having to waste the mental bandwidth on entitled people who complain and whine about utter insignificance.

Go. Don't go. Retreat to your room for a nap. Whatever. It's not on the happy couple to validate you.

Skittle146 − I don’t understand all this fuss about weddings. You either RSVP yes or no. Done. Because the date and location either work for you or they don’t.

my1stComputerWasC64 − NTA. Here we have a couple on one hand about to celebrate the biggest day of their life, and on the other,

people who already complain about it in advance. It doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever that they would do that.

If they're old, like I'm talking 75+, then the fact that they would maybe have to rest more than other guests would be fine,

but why send a whiny disclaimer about it in advance? If they're young to middle-aged, then they're just being whiny little brats about this.

Frappuccino63 − How rude of them to send you that bs!

These Redditors cheered OP for cutting off entitled, negative people from the celebration

BrewDogDrinker − Nta. F**k em. They sound miserable.

YourLittleRuth − Win! They don't come and grouch up your wedding celebrations, AND they don't speak to you again!

Feel free to go on with your life without them. Seriously, why would you want such mannerless, entitled people in your friendship circle?

What do you think? Was uninviting the couple a reasonable way to avoid unnecessary tension, or should the engaged pair have overlooked the complaints and let them attend anyway? Share your thoughts below!
