Mom Refuses Summer Camp For Her Son, But His Daily Tantrums Make Her Question Everything

Choosing childcare is never just about convenience. Parents often have to balance cost, education, structure, and their child’s happiness, which can make even a simple summer decision surprisingly complicated.

The original poster believes her son is benefiting from a strict but highly experienced daycare provider who focuses on independence, responsibility, and learning. Her nine-year-old, however, feels completely differently and has been begging to attend summer camp instead.

With the two options offering very different experiences, the parents are now divided over whether they should prioritize discipline and value or their child’s growing frustration. Read on to find out why this summer debate has become such a big family issue.

'AITA for refusing to put my son in camp?'

My husband and I have 3 kids (9m, 5f, and 3f). My kids go to a home daycare after school and in the summers.

It’s run by a woman, Judy, with her daughter as an assistant. Every kid in the daycare is related to Judy, except for my kids.

Judy was a preschool and public school teacher for 20 years before opening her daycare. She’s a great teacher but she is very strict.

The kids aren’t allowed to bring any toys from home or anything with a screen (including a smartwatch).

Judy doesn’t allow screen time during the school year and over the summer she only allows a half hour to an hour of PBS

kids for the kids over 5 after they do roughly an hour of “summer school” while the kids 5 and under nap.

Judy also doesn’t make alternate meals without a doctors note.

She tells the kids she did her job by making the food, whether they choose to eat it or not is on them.

Additionally, the kids over 5 are responsible for packing their bags when they go out (they do at least 3 outings a week).

The first few times they get a list, after that it’s on them to remember their snacks, water bottles, books, toys, etc.

If they forget, she keeps a small water bottle and granola bar in her bag but it’s not as good as what they would get if they remembered to pack.

My son hates Judy’s daycare. He doesn’t want to carry a backpack so he ends up drinking lukewarm water and eating a granola bar or skipping snack,

he hates her lunches, he’s upset about the no screen rule and having to leave his watch at home, and he especially hates summer school..

He’s been begging me to put him in camp. I’ve been refusing because:

a) camp is $450 a week for him to be in a group of 25 kids watched by some teenagers at our local rec center.

Judy charges $375 and has 8 kids to 2 adults..

b) camp is from 9-4. Judy’s is from 7-7 (our kids are typically there from 8:30-6:30).

c) the kids are learning responsibility at Judy’s and the summer work helps prevent the summer slump.

My son has been throwing massive tantrums when it’s time to leave in the mornings and my husband is wanting to give in

and put him in camp to make things easier. I’m refusing to pull him from Judy’s so he’s upset at me for being difficult.

Every parent wants to believe they are making choices that benefit their child, but sometimes the hardest decisions involve separating what builds character from what causes unnecessary distress.

A structured environment can teach valuable lessons, yet children also need to feel heard when something is consistently making them unhappy. The challenge is finding the difference between normal resistance and a genuine sign that a situation is no longer working.

In this situation, the disagreement is not simply about camp versus daycare. The OP sees Judy’s program as an opportunity for her son to develop independence, responsibility, and healthy habits. From her perspective, packing his own bag, eating what is provided, spending less time with screens, and continuing academic practice are skills that will help him long after summer ends.

Financial considerations and convenience also matter, since Judy provides longer hours at a lower cost with more adult supervision. However, her son’s repeated frustration suggests the issue may not be a single complaint.

He dislikes several major parts of the experience, including the food expectations, lack of personal choices, summer lessons, and the strict rules around technology. The question becomes whether he is simply resisting structure or whether the environment is creating ongoing stress.

A different psychological perspective is that children often resist boundaries that are actually beneficial, but persistent emotional distress deserves attention. Adults may value independence-building activities because they understand the long-term benefits, while children experience only the immediate discomfort.

At the same time, responsibility develops best when children feel some ownership rather than feeling powerless. A child who learns independence through encouragement may develop confidence, while a child who feels constantly controlled may associate responsibility with frustration.

The strongest approach often involves finding balance between reasonable expectations and giving children some choices within those limits.

Child psychologist Dr. Laura Markham explains that children cooperate more effectively when they feel emotionally connected and understood, rather than simply being forced into compliance. She emphasizes that validating a child’s feelings does not mean giving in to every request; it means acknowledging their experience while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

Verywell Family similarly notes that children benefit from routines and expectations but also need opportunities for autonomy, especially as they grow older.

Viewed through that lens, both parents have understandable concerns. The OP is trying to provide a structured summer that supports development, while her husband is responding to the emotional toll of seeing their child unhappy every morning. A possible middle ground would not necessarily mean abandoning Judy immediately.

They could explore whether certain adjustments are possible, such as allowing the son to have more input into snacks, activities, or preparation routines, while also setting a clear expectation that responsibility remains part of his day.

The best childcare arrangement is not always the one with the strictest rules or the lowest cost. It is the one where children are safe, supported, and growing while still feeling respected. Teaching responsibility matters, but so does teaching children that their feelings are important enough to be considered.

These Redditors believed OP should prioritize the child’s happiness and consider summer camp instead

disagreeabledinosaur − YTA He's 9, not 5 or 6.  Judy's camp sounds targeted at a much younger level then he's at.

He's old enough to know when he's miserable and bored.

Pickle_Holiday18 − YTA You, for getting your son so into screens he’s miserable without them.

You, for not listening to your kid who is not thriving in a very strict environment. And I pity any neurodivergent kids under strict Judy.

Parenting is not one size fits all, and your kid is not fitting in. Right now your kid is learning that his discomfort is not important you.

Sit with that a while.

IslandQueen504 − Put him in camp for heavens sake. Summer is supposed to be fun.

BerneDoodleLover24 − Info: How old are the other kids? Your son is 9, your youngest daughter is 3.

They all do the same activities, so it is likely that one of them doesn‘t like it.

Having all three kids at the same daycare is convenient for you, but your son HATES it. I guess, he is bored.

He is nine and the summer should be fun and not worse than school.

10 hours day care everyday is really long and if your son is the oldest, I get that he hates it. Tending to YTA.

sparkleyyyy − YTA kids have so little say in their lives. If you can swing it even for a few weeks, send him to camp.

No one deserves to go somewhere they hate every day.

(I’m not saying to give into the tantrums but really try to see it from his perspective and talk it out with him. ) Also, summer school for an 9...

If he doesn’t need the help, he really should have a break.

NovaScrawlers − I feel like a lot of these commenters are seeing "no screens" and that's why they're cheering for Judy.

But man, I was a kid in the 90s who loved reading and I would've hated Judy's, too.

She seems a very "all work and no play makes kids into great adults"

and I just think that's going to have as negative an effect on them as if they had no rules at all.

If you can afford the camp, do the camp.

You can do some summer work with your kids in the evenings yourself if you're that concerned with "summer slump."

But camp also won't have screens, and he'll be with other kids his own age, and trust,

summer camps with a gaggle of kids are just as safe as classrooms with gaggles of kids. He'll be fine. YTA.

FullExplanation9400 − Put him in camp. Sounds fun. And he’ll have new experience that will expand his learning.

Dont most summer camps have no screens as well?

This group asked for more details about Judy’s childcare environment and whether the son’s concerns were being taken seriously

cassjames6789 − Info - what’s your husbands plan for managing the additional drop offs and hours outside of camp hours you need camp for?

In general, it does sound as if your son might have outgrown Judy’s.

timothybcat − INFO: what exactly do the kids do when they're with Judy in her home?

They can't watch TV (except the time she schedules) or play video games or play with their own toys.

I'm guessing they go out to places like the park or the beach, and that's probably fun.

Who does you son have to play with at Judy's house? Do they get along?

Does he have any free play where he gets to choose what to do, or is his every activity scheduled for him?

Do they have access to activities he actually likes? For instance, if he likes books, does he have any time to just sit and read by himself?

If he likes trucks or teddy bears or puzzles, can he do those type of activities?

Does he ever have any say in what type of food they eat?

Does Judy accept any feedback about what activities your kids like, or what kind of food they're used to?

Judy's place does sound overly regimented and it's not surprising that some kids might balk at being micromanaged.

Yes, it's her house and her rules, but it's it really the right place for *your* son?

Mrs_B- − INFO. How many reviews did you get? Is there any regulator who carries out inspections?

Have you ever dropped by unannounced to check all is ok? How do your other children react? Sometimes anger and rebellion can be signs of abuse.

You love Judy, your eldest with the ability to communicate is telling you something isn't right.

Is there someone else he can talk to about this who has no bias?

Before you write this off as acting out, be 100% sure that Judy isn't abusing your kids. Learn to look for the signs.

What do you think? Should parents prioritize a structured environment that builds skills, or should summer include more freedom and fun when possible? Share your thoughts below!
