Teacher Was Mocked For Wearing Cardigans Until Her Coworker Learned The Real Reason

Sometimes the smallest choices people make every day have a story behind them that nobody else can see. A repeated outfit, a routine, or a personal habit may seem unusual to others, but it can be connected to memories and experiences far deeper than anyone realizes.

The original poster worked as a teacher and often wore the same style of outfit: slacks, a loose top, and a cardigan. Some coworkers mocked her for having a “uniform” and repeatedly questioned why she dressed that way. For a long time, she simply ignored the comments.

But when one colleague asked again, she finally decided to explain the real reason behind her choice. Read on to find out why the room suddenly went silent.

A teacher revealed the heartbreaking reason behind her everyday cardigan when coworkers mocked her clothing

'Why do you always wear a cardigan?'

Years ago before I moved jobs, I was a teacher for a couple of years. I wore the same thing to work every day, slacks, a loose top and an...

I had a bunch of them, not the same one every day.

Some of the other teachers made fun of my "uniform" and there was some attempted bullying that I ignored.

When they'd ask why I always wore what I did, I'd just reply that I liked it. They'd roll their eyes and I'd go back to whatever I was doing.

Near the end of what I knew would be my last year there, one of them started in again with "WHY do you always wear the same thing?"

I stopped what I was doing and asked her if she really wanted to know. She laughed and said she did, so I told her.

When I was a kid, one of my cousins was killed in a school shooting. She bled out. It was really hard for me and my family.

I ended up learning all I could about how to help someone who had been shot.

I always wore a cardigan to school so if one of the kids got shot, I'd have something to use to put on the wound to hold pressure.

The other teacher just said a quiet "oh" and nobody asked me again.

Sometimes the things people see as ordinary are actually carrying years of fear, preparation, or personal meaning that they will never know about. A person’s clothing, routines, or habits may look simple from the outside, but they can represent memories, survival strategies, or a quiet way of feeling prepared for the unexpected.

In this situation, the teacher’s cardigan was never just part of a workplace outfit. To her colleagues, it looked like a repetitive style choice that invited teasing. To her, it was connected to a painful childhood experience and a desire to protect the students in her care.

After losing a cousin in a school shooting, she chose to learn emergency response skills and carried a cardigan every day because she believed it could become a useful tool in a crisis.

The repeated questions about her clothing likely felt frustrating because they focused on something superficial while ignoring the possibility that there was a deeply personal reason behind it.

A different psychological perspective is that humans naturally make assumptions based on visible behavior. We often create simple explanations for what we see because it helps us navigate everyday life. Someone wearing similar clothes every day might appear to be following a fashion preference, avoiding decisions, or simply having a personal style.

Rarely do people consider that the behavior could be connected to trauma, anxiety, preparation, or a sense of responsibility. This story also highlights how survivors and people affected by tragedy sometimes develop rituals or habits that provide a feeling of control after experiencing something uncontrollable.

Trauma psychologist Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, author of *The Body Keeps the Score*, explains that traumatic experiences can influence how people perceive safety and prepare for potential threats long after the original event has passed. These responses are not always obvious to others because they may appear as ordinary routines or behaviors.

The National Center for PTSD similarly explains that trauma can affect people’s thoughts, behaviors, and sense of safety in ways that are not immediately visible to those around them.

Viewed through that lens, the teacher’s response was powerful because it revealed the hidden meaning behind something others had dismissed.

She was not asking her coworkers to understand every detail of her personal history, but their repeated teasing ignored the possibility that there was more behind her choices than they realized. The moment also shows how quickly judgment can disappear when people learn the story behind someone’s actions.

The lesson is not that every unusual habit has a dramatic explanation. It is that curiosity should usually come before criticism. People carry invisible experiences every day, and a small choice that seems strange from the outside may be connected to something far more meaningful than anyone expects.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors praised OP for standing up to an intrusive coworker

EternallyNotFine − Good for you OP! Edit: Not that your school got shot up i mean, but that you put that nosy-mosey in her place

rrudolph − First, you’re basically my hero. Second, I, too, wear cardigans every day.

DragonfruitFew5542 − Well I'm a therapist and we wear cardigans on cardigans on cardigans. Also, kudos to you for standing up for yourself!

This group questioned why anyone cares so much about another person’s clothing

haylovemyka − It is wild to me that people pay so close attention to what people wear.

I barely can pay attention to people’s hair. I can barely remember what I ate yesterday but people can remembers outfits. Crazy.

luvbirdpod − I had a coworker who always wore a button down shirt and khaki pants. In the winter, she'd add a turtleneck.

Different colors. I noticed, I thought it was boring, but I never said anything

because clearly having a "uniform"worked for her and it was none of my nevermind.

Brilliant_Wait_3266 − I must be lucky in my school. No one gives a crap what the others wear.

I’ve never heard anyone even talk about someone’s outfit unless it’s a compliment.

hiddenleafs − i never understand why people care what others are wearing? ?

like a lot of the time people wear the same thing bc it’s just what they like or feel comfortable in.

also unfortunate that you (we, in america) have to think about school shootings enough to prepare for them like that. i’m sorry for your loss

These commenters defended repeating outfits as practical, comfortable, and efficient

spaetzlechick − I wore a cardigan almost every day for years, occasionally wearing a blazer on higher profile days.

Why? Office temperature control sucked and layers were required to avoid freezing or boiling.

Tulipsarered − My go to is, "Steve Jobs wore the same thing everyday and people called him a genius for not wasting mental bandwidth on meaningless decisions.

I do it and I'm the weirdo. Sounds pretty classist to me. "

This Redditor admired OP’s preparedness and thoughtful approach to student safety

oohrosie − Cardigan sleeves could easily be a tourniquet for student limbs since they're small enough.

You are 100% the teacher I wanted to be before I was shown the ways this state expected its teachers to teach.

What do you think? Should coworkers have been more respectful from the beginning, or was the teacher’s explanation the moment they needed to understand? Share your thoughts below!
