Husband Refuses To Repeat Miserable Family Vacation After Wife Breaks Their Agreement

Compromise matters in every marriage, especially when vacation time is limited and extended family expectations are involved. The problem begins when one partner believes a decision has already been settled while the other quietly changes course.

That is what happened after the original poster and his wife agreed not to repeat a family beach trip they had both stopped enjoying. Despite that conversation, she later signed herself and their children up for the same location, schedule, and week-long routine because her mother wanted everyone together.

He offered to attend part of the trip, but even that was not enough to calm the disagreement. Scroll down to decide whether he is protecting his boundaries or letting resentment take over.

'AITA for refusing to go for a full week on my wife’s family vacation after we had agreed not to repeat it?'

For years, my wife, our two kids, and I went to the same beach town for a week with part of my wife’s family: her brother, SIL, their kids, and...

We originally did this because another sibling’s family lived there, so it was a chance for all the cousins to be together.

The issue is that the trip became extremely repetitive and rigid.

Same beach, same street, same basic schedule, same restaurants/meals on the same days, strict quiet times/bedtimes, very little flexibility.

My wife’s family is very routine-driven and frugal. My family is structured too, but on vacation we like variety, activities, and some flexibility.

When the other sibling’s family still lived there, there was more balance. Once they stopped going, it became just us and the routine-driven side.

The last couple years were miserable.

The houses got smaller while the kids got bigger, the routine became more rigid, our kids were bored and stir-crazy,

and I ended up trying to take them out to do things just to break up the week.

That caused tension because I was “going outside the plan.” My wife was also stressed and admitted afterward that the trip was no longer enjoyable.

After the last trip, my wife and I had a long conversation and agreed we would not do that same vacation again.

We talked about trying something different: mountains, lake, different beach, really anything else.

Recently, my wife handed me her phone and asked which vacation house was nicer. It was the same beach, same street, basically the same exact trip again.

I was angry because I thought we had already agreed this was done.

Her explanation is that her mom said this location is sentimental to her and that she wanted all the grandkids together there.

Her brother’s family agreed immediately.

My wife says it was “this or nothing,” so she chose this because getting Grandma and the grandkids together was important to her.

She has already fully committed herself and our kids to going for the full week, and she assumed I would eventually just agree and go too.

My issue is that I feel like her mom and brother made the decision, my wife accepted it, and I was informed after the fact.

I told her I felt betrayed and isolated because we had already agreed as a couple not to repeat this trip.

She keeps circling back to “this is important to me, why won’t you just do it for me?”

We've been fighting for a solid week about it, so I offered a compromise - I said that because it's become so important to her, I'd come for the last...

She has committed herself and the kids for the full week.

Now she says that since she knows I don’t want to be there, I’ve ruined it, and asks why I have to “act like this.”

She has also brought it up around the kids, so now they know there is conflict.

I am not trying to stop the kids from seeing their grandmother. I am not saying no to them going.

I am saying no to spending a full week of my vacation time repeating the exact trip we already agreed was bad for our family.

Compromise is one of the foundations of a long-term relationship, but compromise only works when both people believe their agreements still matter.

Few things create resentment faster than discovering that a difficult conversation seemed settled, only for one partner to reverse course after outside pressure. In those moments, the conflict often shifts from the original decision to whether each person’s voice still carries equal weight within the marriage.

In this situation, the vacation itself appears to be only part of the problem. The OP and his wife had previously acknowledged that the annual beach trip had stopped being enjoyable.

They agreed to break the tradition and explore something different for future vacations. When the same trip resurfaced, however, the decision had already been shaped by the wife’s mother and brother before the OP was meaningfully included.

From his perspective, the issue is not refusing family time or preventing his children from seeing their grandmother. He even supports the children attending. What hurts is feeling that a mutual agreement between spouses was quietly replaced by an extended family’s preferences, leaving him expected to accept a decision that had effectively already been made.

A different psychological perspective is that families often experience what therapists describe as loyalty conflicts after marriage. A spouse may genuinely want to honor commitments made within the marriage while also feeling responsible for preserving traditions and meeting the emotional expectations of parents.

When those loyalties collide, people sometimes avoid disappointing their family of origin because the consequences feel more immediate or emotionally intense.

Unfortunately, that can unintentionally leave their partner feeling like the relationship has become secondary. The resulting conflict is rarely about a beach house or a vacation schedule, it is about which relationships are allowed to influence major family decisions.

Marriage researcher Dr. John Gottman explains that successful couples develop what he calls a “culture of us,” where important decisions are made with the partnership at the center rather than allowing outside relationships to consistently override shared agreements. He notes that trust grows when partners believe they will advocate for each other even under external pressure.

Verywell Mind similarly emphasizes that healthy boundaries with extended family help protect the marital relationship by ensuring that decisions affecting the household are made collaboratively rather than by default through family expectations.

Viewed through that lens, the OP’s proposal to attend the final two nights appears less like punishment and more like an effort to balance competing priorities. He acknowledged his wife’s desire for the children and grandmother to spend time together while also remaining true to the agreement he believed they had made.

His wife’s disappointment is understandable because shared family traditions often carry emotional significance that extends beyond the activities themselves.

At the same time, expecting a partner to dedicate an entire week to an experience both previously agreed had become miserable risks sending the message that preserving tradition matters more than honoring commitments made within the marriage.

Strong marriages are not built on always choosing the same vacation or always satisfying extended family. They are built on confidence that promises made to one another remain meaningful, even when outside expectations become difficult. Sometimes protecting that trust requires finding a solution that respects family traditions without sacrificing the couple’s ability to make decisions together.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These Redditors suggested going but refusing to follow the family’s plans

AshlynM2 − NTA But I’d probably just go, and make plans with my kids to do whatever they/you want and who cares what anyone else thinks.

Find stuff that you haven’t done before, go places you haven’t gone before,

and if her family has an issue with it, say it’s your vacation too and you and the kids are gonna have fun.

Maybe if they realize that you aren’t just gonna be a pushover and do what they want,

They either one won’t push as much for you to go, or they’ll just let it go. Make memories with your kids :-) s__ew everyone else lol

Squinky75 − How about you go and stop letting them dictate the plan. You want to take the kids somewhere, take them. And let them complain.

This group condemned the wife for breaking their agreement and using guilt

Ipso-Pacto-Facto − Why did you let me down? Why did you lie? Why do you prioritize your mother and brother over your husband?

You’re disrespectful and clearly our marriage isn’t something you care too much about.

Don’t ask me why I won’t give in to you, your brother and mother. Ask yourself why you put me in this position.

Your mother’s vacation wants have come first for too many years.

I am entitled to have my wife keep her promise to me without being demonized. I wouldn’t go at all.

Leourana − NTA - Your wife is a manipulation master.

She made a decision without consulting you and now she is putting extra emotional baggage on you becuse you wont just do what she wants to do. "

This is important to me" while completly ignoring what was important to you and what was decided before hand. That vacation sounds like a nightmare.

If my husband tried to force me to go on a vacation and then also be so childish as to say "I ruined it"

becuse I didnt just do what he wanted (after I voiced and communicated what I actually want way in advance) I would lose my s__t.

Getting the kids involved is also 100% not ok.

iffyfell − NTAH “this is important to me, why won’t you just do it for me? ” that's manipulative af.

if its so important to her, she should've brought it up when you two were agreeing on not going there again,

or at the very least brought you in on the discussion before she unilaterally trashed said agreement.

krendyB − NTA but the problem isn’t the vacation, it’s that your wife has now made you the bad guy to both your kids and her family. You’re supposed to...

B3liall − This is pretty simple. You and your wife agreed that you would not do these vacations again.

Your wife went behind your back and committed herself and your kids to going and when you tell her how you feel she makes it about herself.

This also means the solution to this problem is equally a simple, don't go.

Don't let her guilt you, don't let anyone else change your view on not going,

because if you do then you're pretty much agreeing to do it forever. . NTA, stand your ground. Good luck.

These commenters said OP and the children should not be forced to attend

Trick-Love-4571 − NTA but your wife is. She can go alone if she wants, the kids shouldn’t be forced into it and neither should you.

Aidyn_the_Grey − NTA. Well maybe a slight E S H for allowing your wife to take your kids on a vacation they are sure to hate.

Your wife needs to put her big girl panties on, grow a spine, and tell her mother NO.

Forreal, doing the same miserable vacation year after year is straight up asinine.

enby-wgong-slxt − NTA, your wife should have spoken to you before making plans FOR you.

Was the husband’s compromise reasonable, or should he have gone for the full week to preserve family harmony? How would you balance your spouse’s wishes against long-standing family traditions? Share your thoughts below.
