Pregnant Woman Asked Sick Nephew To Skip Family Party, Brother Accused Her Of Ruining Everything

Most people agree that sick children should stay home, but family emotions have a way of complicating even the most straightforward decisions. When everyone wants to be included, setting a reasonable boundary can suddenly feel like a personal attack.

This Redditor was looking forward to celebrating her younger brother’s birthday while preparing for the arrival of her own baby. Instead, she found herself caught in the middle of an argument after her older brother insisted on bringing his feverish toddler to the gathering despite her high risk pregnancy.

What followed left family members hurt, angry, and taking sides over who should have stayed home. Read on to find out how everything unraveled.

A pregnant woman asks her sick nephew’s family to skip a party, sparking outrage

'AITAH for telling my brother and SIL not to come to a family gathering?'

I (31F) am 8 months pregnant with a high-risk pregnancy. I could go into labor any day now.

I have a younger brother (YB, 27) and an older brother (OB, 33).

OB is married with a 2-year-old and a 7-month-old. We rarely see OB’s family for a few reasons:

* They live 45 mins away, OB doesn't drive, and public transit with toddlers is hard.

* His wife has CPTSD from childhood trauma, is deeply suspicious of us and keeps her distance.

She is also a doctor and fiercely protective of her kids. We all try our best to respect her boundries.

* OB is an undiagnosed autistic. He’s brilliant but has the emotional maturity of a toddler. He cannot handle any criticism and gets easily offended.

We grew up very close and I spent my life acting as his emotional regulator. Now he only calls me when he needs emotional support or cuts contact for weeks.

The Situation: YB planned his 27th birthday party at our parents' house. We were thrilled because OB's kids have almost never been there.

However, the morning of the party, OB called our mom saying his son had a fever. Mom initially told him to stay home to protect me and our older parents.

An hour later, OB called back crying and begging for a ride anyway, claiming it was "just a small fever."

Feeling guilty, my mom actually drove all the way to get them before calling to ask my opinion.. I told her it was a terrible idea.

It left me with three options: complicate my high-risk pregnancy even more, skip the party and isolate

from my newly-contagious family (dangerous if I go into early labor), or make everyone upset by telling them to stay home.

My mom didn't want to be the bad guy, so I called OB to express my discomfort.

His wife intercepted the phone and said that, as a doctor and a mom, she understood—but since I was the one at risk, I should stay home and miss the...

She passive-aggressively asked, "So do you prefer we don't come?" I said yes, and she hung up. OB said nothing.

Immediately after hanging up, my brother had a full-blown meltdown. He called my mom (who was already waiting in her car outside their house),

started yelling and accused her of ruining everything.

I think deep down he knew that if the roles were reversed, there is no way in hell they would let me near them with a fever.

Mom turned around and came home. We had a lovely party without them, but now OB and his wife are furious at everyone.

OB is giving me the silent treatment and only calling our parents to scold them. AITA?

Family gatherings often force people to balance kindness with responsibility, and those priorities do not always point in the same direction. Saying “no” to loved ones can feel especially painful when children are involved or when someone is already emotionally vulnerable.

Yet there are moments when protecting someone’s health is not an overreaction but a necessary boundary. Pregnancy, particularly a high-risk pregnancy approaching full term, is one of those moments because even an ordinary viral illness can carry consequences far beyond a missed celebration.

From a third-person perspective, the OP was not trying to exclude her brother’s family out of preference or resentment. She had initially been excited that everyone might finally be together. The problem arose only after learning that one of her young nephews had a fever.

Given her high-risk pregnancy and the possibility of going into labor at any time, avoiding unnecessary exposure to illness was a medically reasonable concern. She was also placed in an unfair position. Her mother, after initially encouraging the family to stay home, changed course and then sought the OP’s opinion while already driving to pick them up.

That left the OP feeling responsible for making a decision no one else wanted to make. When her sister-in-law directly asked whether she would prefer they not attend, the OP answered honestly rather than pretending to be comfortable with a situation she genuinely believed could put her health at risk.

Another perspective is that the older brother and his wife were likely experiencing disappointment of their own. Traveling with two very young children is difficult, and it sounds as though opportunities to attend family events are already limited.

Missing another gathering may have reinforced feelings of distance or exclusion, particularly for the brother, who reportedly struggles with emotional regulation and abrupt changes in expectations. Those emotions deserve empathy.

However, disappointment does not automatically outweigh another person’s legitimate health concerns. It is also notable that, as the OP herself recognizes, the same family likely would not have welcomed someone with a fever into their own home around their infants. Applying different standards depending on whose health is at risk often creates unnecessary conflict.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advises that preventing infections during pregnancy is an important part of protecting both maternal and fetal health.

Pregnant individuals, particularly those with high-risk pregnancies, are encouraged to reduce avoidable exposure to contagious illnesses whenever possible because infections can increase complications for both parent and baby.

That guidance highlights why the disagreement should not be viewed simply as a matter of hurt feelings. The OP was making a decision informed by medical risk rather than personal preference.

While her brother’s emotional reaction may reflect genuine distress, it does not change the underlying reality that attending a social gathering with a child who has a fever creates a preventable health risk for others, especially someone nearing delivery.

Ultimately, healthy families sometimes disappoint one another in order to keep each other safe. Missing a birthday celebration is unfortunate, but it is temporary. Protecting the health of a mother and unborn baby carries consequences that last far longer.

Compassion for the brother’s disappointment and firmness about reasonable health boundaries are not mutually exclusive. In this situation, they can, and likely should, exist together.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These Redditors agreed sick children should stay home and backed OP’s boundary

RandiLynn1982 − NTA: you don’t bring sick kids or people around others.

TheKreatori − NTA. Are your OB's kids in kindergarden yet?

If not they will soon learn what the mentality "its only a little fever" actually causes when they are constantly sick due to parents being morons.

PrincessCG − NTA. She's a doctor and thinks it's okay to bring her sick kid to a party?

Spiritual-Air-2196 − A sick child and a high-risk pregnancy are valid reasons to avoid the gathering. Your boundary was reasonable.

cwrightbrain − NTA. The responsibility to not spread a disease is on OB and his wife. You were not the only one at risk.

Pale-Attorney7474 − Nta This is ridiculous. The sick people stay home. End of. You'd have to be an actual numpty muppet to think otherwise.

These commenters said the brother’s behavior was exhausting and OP should step back

TrustVisual1394 − NTA. You need to drop the rope.

Your brother's undiagnosed suspected autism might be the cause of his meltdowns, but that doesnt make them okay.

I'm autistic and I am still responsible for my behaviour, and for apologising if it ever crosses a line Frankly,

I don't believe your SIL is "suspicious" of your family, I think she's most likely an abuser who has succeeded in isolating your brother

from the rest of your family, and you need to discuss that with your other adult family members.

Maybe someone can buy him driving lessons for Christmas/birthday or offer to teach him for free

After you have your baby I think you need to make time for therapy.

Until then, reach out to your brother and send him a message explaining that you'll always be here for him,

but you don't have the mental bandwidth to be his therapist, a role you have not trained for.

You are his sister and his friend, so you can't only ever receive calls from him when he's suffering, you want to share in his happy moments too.

But right now, you need some space to prepare for your baby's arrival. And then leave the ball im his court. Don't call him, text him, nothing.

Let him come to you Do NOT apologise to him, for excluding him from the party or anything else.

Just drop the rope and see if he ever pulls his head out and recognises his problematic behaviour.

is_it_worth_itt − NTA. I can't stand dealing with someone like him at all.

This Redditor blamed the mother for ignoring the agreed plan and risking others’ health

firefly232 − NTA But I'm sorry to say this, your mother is TA a little bit.

Why on earth did she think it was OK to go back on her previously agreed statements

and plan to go and pick her son and grandchildren up when this in theory could be harmful to you and your grandparents?

This commenter joked that the entire family sounded chaotic and difficult

Proud_Mistake_4686 − Your family sounds tiresome to be around. And I thought my family was messed up .

LoL (ok, we are. But we can be a fun group of f-up’s)

Do you think the mother should have held firm from the beginning, or was the pregnant woman right to directly tell her brother’s family not to attend?
