Living with someone who acts completely differently behind closed doors can leave you questioning your own reality. It becomes even more isolating when the people you turn to for help cannot imagine the version of that person you see every day.

That is the painful situation this 17 year old Redditor says he faced after years of trying to explain how his mother treated him whenever his father was not around. Feeling dismissed and running out of ways to prove what was happening, he made a decision that changed everything.

The truth finally came out, but now part of the family believes he crossed a line that should never have been crossed. Scroll down to read the full story.

A teenager secretly recorded private conversations after no one believed how their mother acted

'AITAH for recording my mom without telling her and playing it back to my dad because nobody believed what she says to me when hes not around?'

I dont even know how to start this so I will just say what happened.

My mom has two completely different versions of herself. When my dad is home she is calm, reasonable, normal.

The second he leaves she becomes someone I genuinely do not recognize.

Nitpicking everything, saying things like you are just like your father meaning it as an insult, telling me I am ungrateful and that she does not know why she bothers.

One time she told me she wishes she had stopped at my older brother. Stuff like that.

Whenever I would tell my dad he would get this look on his face like he felt bad but did not fully believe me.

Not in a mean way, more like he just could not picture it because he had never seen it. My brother is older and out of the house so it...

He would talk to her and she would deny it and then be even colder to me for a few days after.. This went on for about two years.

A few months ago I started recording on my phone whenever I felt the tension building.

Nothing crazy, I would just hit record in my pocket before things escalated. I got maybe four or five recordings over two months.

Her telling me I ruin the atmosphere in the house.

Her saying I should be grateful she does not just kick me out even though I am 17 and have nowhere to go.

Her bringing up a mistake I made three years ago in the middle of an unrelated argument.

Last month my dad and I were alone in the car and he brought up that I seemed distant lately and asked if everything was okay at home.

I just handed him my phone and pressed play. He did not say anything for a long time after it ended.

That night he and my mom had the longest conversation I have ever heard them have behind a closed door.

The next morning she could barely look at me.

She has been civil since then but there is this cold energy that did not used to be there, or maybe it was always there and now nobody is pretending...

My dad apologized to me for not believing me sooner. That meant a lot.

But now my aunt knows, my mom told her, and my aunt called me and said what I did was a serious betrayal of trust

and that every mother loses her patience sometimes

and I had no right to record private moments in my own home and use them like evidence against my own parent.

Maybe she has a point. I did not tell anyone I was recording. I did it because I felt like I had no other option but I understand why it...

I genuinely do not know how to feel about it now that the dust is settling. AITAH

Trust is the foundation of every family, but trust cannot survive when one person’s reality is repeatedly denied. Being disbelieved by the people who are supposed to protect us can be just as painful as the behavior itself because it leaves us questioning our own experiences.

In situations where harmful interactions happen only behind closed doors, people sometimes resort to extraordinary measures simply to prove that what they are living through is real. That does not make those measures ideal, but it often explains why they feel necessary.

From a third-person perspective, the teenager did not begin recording his mother in order to embarrass or expose her publicly. For nearly two years, he tried telling his father what was happening only to have his concerns met with uncertainty. His father did not appear malicious; he simply struggled to reconcile the caring wife he knew with the version of her son described.

Meanwhile, the mother allegedly denied her comments and, according to the teenager, became even colder after those conversations. By the time the recordings began, he was not gathering evidence for revenge.

He was trying to answer a painful question: “How do I make someone believe me?” When his father finally heard the recordings, his immediate apology suggests that the evidence fundamentally changed his understanding of the situation.

Another perspective is that recording a family member without their knowledge is a serious step and one that can understandably feel like a breach of privacy. Healthy families should not have to document conversations to be believed. Yet context matters. Privacy exists to protect ordinary personal interactions, not to shield repeated emotional mistreatment from accountability.

If someone consistently behaves one way in front of witnesses and another way in private while denying the latter, the imbalance of power leaves the other person with very few options.

The recordings were shared only with the parent who had asked whether something was wrong, not posted online or used to humiliate the mother publicly. That distinction significantly changes the ethical balance.

Psychologist Dr. Jennifer Freyd, whose work on betrayal trauma examines the effects of abuse and institutional denial, has written that one of the most psychologically damaging experiences is having truthful accounts of mistreatment dismissed or minimized by trusted people.

When victims are repeatedly disbelieved, they may feel compelled to seek tangible proof simply to validate their own reality. Freyd emphasizes that acknowledgment is often the first step toward healing because it breaks the cycle of denial that allows harmful patterns to continue.

That perspective helps explain why the father’s reaction mattered so deeply. His apology was not simply about the recordings. It represented recognition that his child had been carrying an emotional burden alone.

The mother’s apparent embarrassment and continued emotional distance may reflect feeling exposed, but those feelings should not overshadow the more important issue: the words captured on the recordings were her own. The central problem was not that they were documented but that they were said in the first place.

Ultimately, this story is less about recording someone than it is about what people do when every attempt to tell the truth has failed. Ideally, families resolve conflicts through honest conversation and mutual trust. When that trust has already broken down, however, evidence sometimes becomes the only way for an invisible problem to become visible.

The teenager’s actions may have violated his mother’s expectation of privacy, but they also allowed a parent who genuinely wanted to understand to finally see the reality his child had been living with. In situations involving ongoing emotional harm, safety and truth sometimes have to come before comfort.

See what others had to share with OP:

These Redditors supported recording the abuse as proof and self-protection

deaf258 − NTA. And your aunt is a dumb 🐮. She doesn't know how long the abuse was going on and you stood up for yourself.

You should email her a copy of those recordings, type that her sister is a (🙄) very nice person

with a reminder that this was going on for at least two years and decide for herself after she had a listen.

Edited to add suggestion with email. Edited again to add a note that Reddit banned OP.

KittyFlopHouse − NTA. Your Aunt can talk about a betrayal of trust all she wants,

but what about the fact you should be able to trust your own mother not to treat you terribly? Keep recording.

Mom's towing the line now, but she's going to break eventually and start doing it again, and it's best if you're protected.

Maybe even buy a separate recording device she doesn't know about.

She's most likely to try it again when she thinks your phone isn't there to record her. Take care, OP! Edited to add the NTA

istnichtmeinname − NTA. I wish I would have had a recording device when I was a kid.

I overheard a lot of stuff because I was a squirrelly kid who like to read in little hidey places

(think of a hole in a wall to attic access), under the table, corners that maybe had a chair in front of it. It was just my thing.

Maybe because I was teased for reading so much. Anyway, my father/stepmother said some horrible things and some horrible things were said directly to me.

I couldn’t get a lot of people to believe me. I got the “you must have misunderstood” and if they did say that it wasn’t that bad.

Or maybe you deserved it in that moment, or everybody has a bad day. I questioned myself for years so I get it .

Good for you for finding a way to provide proof. Good for you for standing up for yourself.

Radiant_Reflection − You did nothing wrong. Maybe you could even play them to her, so she can hear how she sounds.

Sometimes as moms we let out our frustrations on those who are closest to us (our children). Hopefully now she’ll change.

This group identified the mother’s behavior as deliberate verbal and emotional abuse

Mariel2books − NTA That's verbal abuse. The manipulation is also there.

Fluffy_Dragonfruit_4 − NTA this was definitely verbal abuse and as many abusers are, she was good at hiding it.

I’m sorry that you had to live without for so long and I hope that your dad does protect you in the future.

In the meantime, if you have any option available for therapy, I would take it.

Hopefully in a few years, you’ll be able to move out and go to college or get your own place.

Cosmicshimmer − Your aunt believes your mothers version. She didn’t tell her the truth.

It’s also very easy for your aunt to say that when she’s not the one being verbally and emotionally abused.

What your mother was doing was not ok and the fact

she can control herself around other people makes this even worse because that means she’s choosing to speak to you like that.

She’s not lost control from being frustrated, she has control since she can pick and choose when to do it to you.

She’s a spiteful n__ty woman who Is mad because she got caught.

If they want to talk betrayal of trust, how about the betrayal from your mother for treating you that way.

Don’t feel bad, she deserved it and you did nothing wrong. NTA

These commenters believed the mother recruited the aunt to guilt and silence OP

TheLastWord63 − NTA. You should also tell your dad that now the aunt confronted you. Your mom is just getting someone else to do her dirty work.

Wh1t3Castl3 − NTA Your mother is emotionally abusive and your aunt is enabling her by trying to make you feel bad for protecting yourself.

That cold energy from your mother is because she has to pretend to be civil with you now your father knows what she's done

she's trying to smooth things over with your father and give your aunt time to guilt-trip you into keeping quiet so she can go back to her normal behavior.

The fact that she's enlisted your aunt to try and gaslight you into accepting her abuse means she has no intention of changing long-term...

Tell your father what your aunt has been saying asap, because he needs to get your mother into therapy or divorce her.

This user said the aunt was enabling a harmful family pattern that OP was breaking

TwoBeansShort − Is your aunt your mom's sister? I would vet money this is something their mom did to them

and your mom and her sister were taught to respect the family and that what happens in the house stays in the house.

You did nothing wrong. Your mom did wrong and it make sense her sister would jump to defend her. You just keep doing you.

Trust your dad here and understand you're breaking a cycle of abuse.

Do you think secretly recording a parent is justified when it is the only way for a child to prove hidden emotional abuse?
