Boyfriend Planned Nothing For Her Birthday, Now She Doesn’t Want To Celebrate His

Birthdays are rarely about expensive gifts or elaborate surprises. For many people, they are simply a chance to feel loved, appreciated, and important to the people closest to them. That is why a lack of effort can hurt far more than a forgotten present.

This Redditor spent months looking forward to celebrating with her boyfriend, only to watch every plan quietly fall apart. When her birthday finally arrived, she says he made almost no effort despite knowing how much the day meant to her.

Now his own birthday is approaching, and she has no desire to go above and beyond after feeling so deeply disappointed herself. Scroll down to see why she is questioning whether giving him the same treatment would make her the bad guy.

A woman considers matching her boyfriend’s birthday effort after he ignored her special day

'Am I 27f messed up for wanting to treat my boyfriend’s 28m bday the same way he treated mine?'

My (27f) birthday was a couple months ago. Back in the beginning of the year I had planned for us to go on a trip for my bday.

I was willing to cover majority of it. I just wanted to get out of town and make memories with the love of my life.

When we would talk about it, it was clear he wasn’t interested in the trip. Didn’t want to talk about it and didn’t want to spend money.

Mind you, this was a 3 day trip, a car drive away and something we easily could have done financially.

Long story short I ended up cancelling it.

Started to feel like him and I were in a weird place and I didn’t want to force anyone on a trip with me they didn’t want to be apart...

Mind you he asked if we could go celebrate his friends birthday in San Diego that next month (both of us paying $300 each).

We didn’t do it. On my actual bday he didn’t do anything for me, no dinner, no present, no post (not a big deal but it is to him).

I also told him previously I love feeling special on my bday. I do not need ANYTHING grand.

I just want to be taken out to dinner tbh and maybe a little gift is nice? It can be thoughtful it doesn’t have to be anything crazy.

I thought I wasn’t asking for much. Anyway, needless to say my feelings were very hurt on my birthday.

Thankful for my family and his who all wanted to celebrate me and did something kind.

His 28m birthday is coming up and I have no desire to do anything. I just don’t care that much if he feels special or loved. Is that horrible?

I’ll say happy birthday and do whatever he wants to do that day but I’m not planning anything, I am not buying him a gift and I will not make...

I’ll be honest, I’m doing this bc I was so freaking hurt on my bday and he is similar to me in a way

where he wants to feel celebrated and I just couldn’t believe he put 0 effort into doing..anything….

I was hurt about this for a while and we had several conversations about it. He ended up apologizing but what happened already happened! AITAH?

Birthdays are rarely about presents or expensive plans. For many people, they are symbolic moments that answer a much deeper question: “Do the people I love make me feel important?” When expectations around those moments go unmet, the disappointment often lingers long after the day has passed.

The challenge is deciding whether to respond by expressing that hurt or by giving someone the same experience they gave you. Those two choices can feel similar in the moment, but they often lead to very different outcomes.

From a third-person perspective, the OP’s reaction appears to come from accumulated hurt rather than simple pettiness. She communicated well in advance that birthdays mattered to her, planned an affordable trip she was largely willing to finance, and eventually canceled it after sensing her boyfriend had little interest.

On her actual birthday, she experienced what felt like complete indifference: no dinner, no thoughtful gift, and no effort to make the day feel meaningful despite previously telling him exactly what would make her happy.

Adding to the disappointment was his willingness to discuss spending money on a friend’s birthday trip shortly afterward, making it difficult not to compare priorities. Although he later apologized after several conversations, apologies do not automatically erase the emotional impact of feeling overlooked by someone whose attention mattered most.

Another perspective is that choosing to mirror his behavior on his birthday is understandable emotionally but may not achieve what the OP hopes.

There is an important difference between setting a boundary and seeking emotional balance through reciprocity. If she genuinely no longer wants to celebrate him because her feelings have changed, that is honest information about the state of the relationship.

If, however, she is withholding effort primarily so he experiences the same disappointment she felt, the birthday risks becoming less about celebration and more about unresolved resentment. While that impulse is deeply human, it often leaves both people feeling more disconnected rather than more understood.

Relationship researcher Dr. John Gottman has found that healthy relationships are strengthened when partners consistently respond to each other’s emotional needs through what he calls “turning toward” rather than away. He emphasizes that small moments of care, remembering important occasions, showing interest, and making thoughtful gestures, accumulate into trust over time.

Equally important, unresolved disappointments that are never truly repaired can gradually erode goodwill even after apologies are offered.

That perspective helps explain why the OP feels emotionally detached despite receiving an apology. Her disappointment was not simply about one forgotten birthday. It challenged her sense that her boyfriend valued what mattered to her.

His apology acknowledged the mistake, but her emotional experience of being unimportant has not yet been fully repaired. That is why planning his birthday now feels less like an act of love and more like an emotional obligation she no longer wants to fulfill.

Ultimately, the real question is probably not what happens on his birthday but what the OP wants the relationship to become afterward. Matching his lack of effort may temporarily feel fair, but it is unlikely to resolve the underlying issue if the goal is rebuilding closeness.

On the other hand, if she realizes she no longer wants to invest emotionally because this experience fundamentally changed how she sees the relationship, that feeling deserves honest attention. Sometimes the absence of desire to celebrate someone is not revenge, it is a signal that the relationship itself needs a deeper conversation than any birthday plan can provide.

Check out how the community responded:

These Redditors urged her to stop settling and leave the relationship

Optimal-Summer-236 − Well I’ve seen your post history just break up he’s a creep

Temporary-Stand2049 − Is this the same guy you wanted to break up with a year ago? Because if so, why the f__k are you still dating him?

Careless_Welder_4048 − Girl why are you with him?

Ranae − Why are you settling and accepting this as “the love of your life? ” This ain’t it.

MildlyEngineer − You sound like that woman who is way too kind for others.

Put yourself first and don't do anything (or consider leaving the relationship at all).

This group said his neglect showed the relationship lacked care and balance

haunted_vcr − If you’re feeling this way, it means the relationship isn’t meeting your needs.

You aren’t the type of person to blow off someone’s birthday… and you shouldn’t be with someone who is. This man clearly doesn’t love you.

Unlucky-Mulberry-999 − the real issue is you’re with someone who doesn’t care about you

1_BigDuckEnergy − First off, stop calling him "the love of your life", he clearly is not!

You should GET as much as you GIVE in a good relationship, and you clearly are not,

so maybe it is time to GIVE what you GET Or maybe it is time to move on - your call

These commenters suggested matching his effort while reconsidering the relationship

Katerh − He didn’t feel like doing anything for your birthday, so he didn’t. Now you don’t feel like doing anything for his birthday, so don’t.

I wouldn’t do anything for him either.

The_biters − You should reciprocate the energy that’s given to you - but it’s weird to say that within a romantic relationship.

Overall is this a relationship you want to continue? Are there other areas in the relationship that you don’t feel fulfilled in?

Do you think giving him the same birthday treatment is fair, or is it a sign that the relationship has already reached its breaking point?
