Woman Wins Rare $700 Bourbon In Thanksgiving Raffle, Brother-In-Law Claims It’s His

Rare collectibles have a way of bringing out strong emotions, especially when someone misses out on an opportunity that may never come around again. Even the closest families can end up arguing over who truly deserves an item that almost nobody can find.

This Redditor, an avid bourbon collector herself, attended a special Thanksgiving event where lucky participants had the chance to purchase highly sought-after bottles at their original retail price.

When fortune smiled on her and she secured one of the rarest bourbons available, her brother-in-law immediately claimed it belonged to him because he had originally planned to attend before work got in the way.

The disagreement has lingered ever since, with both sides convinced they have the stronger argument. Read on to see what happened.

A bourbon collector’s rare raffle win sparked a family feud over who truly deserved the prize

'AITA for "stealing" a bottle of $700 bourbon from my BIL?'

So, in my (29F) family, a few of us drink/collect bourbon, mainly me, my BIL (33M), and my dad (60M).

Some bottles are extremely rare, expensive, and hard to find, so collectors will line up at stores or attend special events hoping to get one.

Last Thanksgiving, a liquor store near my sister and BIL was holding an event with a large number of rare bourbons.

Everyone who arrived at 8 a.m. received a number, and numbers were randomly called throughout the morning.

When called, you could buy one available bottle at MSRP. Everyone would eventually be called, but earlier numbers had better choices.

My BIL was especially excited because he has a huge bourbon collection but has never been able to find a bottle of Pappy

(this is kind of like the holy grail of bourbons that all collectors, myself included, would die to find a bottle of at this price).

I was about 50/50 on going because I also collect bourbon and would k__l for a bottle of pappy,

but I had not fully committed because it was thanksgiving morning and we had a lot going on at home.

At the last minute, my BIL had to work Thanksgiving morning.

He asked my sister, who does not care about bourbon, to go in his place and hopefully get the Pappy.

She asked me to come so she would not have to attend "this whole bourbon circus alone".

Since I had already considered going and wanted a chance at a cool bottle for my collection, I went with her.

We also invited my dad, because he too would k__l to get his own bottle of pappy, but he thought the whole thing sounded weird and stayed home.

My sister and I received numbers 54 and 55.

My number was called about 15 people in, and I bought a bottle of Pappy for around $100.

It is nearly impossible to find near us and usually sells for $700+.

My sister was called much later after the pappy was gone and settled for a bottle of EH Taylor, which is good but not nearly as rare or expensive.

I was thrilled, this is literally the bottle of a lifetime I never thought I would get.

However, when we got home, my BIL immediately said, “That is my bourbon.”

He believes I went solely as his stand-in, so the Pappy should belong to him.

He says I “stole” the bottle he would have gotten if he had been able to attend.

I disagree. I went because I also drink and collect bourbon and wanted a bottle for myself.

I never agreed to give him anything I bought.

I knew my sister was there specifically for him, but I considered myself an independent participant who was also keeping her company.

I could understand his argument if my sister had brought my mom, who could not care less about bourbon, and she happened to get the Pappy.

Then she would clearly have been there only as a stand-in. But that was not my situation.

My BIL still refers to it as “his Pappy” and brings up “Pappygate” whenever possible. So, Reddit, AITA?

I genuinely did not realize he believed I was attending on his behalf.

In his mind, I schemed him out of the one bottle he has wanted for years to complete his collection.

Disclaimer: This argument is mostly in good fun, and I love my sister and BIL.

I would just like to settle it so I can stop hearing about Pappygate but when I open this bottle it will 100% be with him present for the first...

edit: so many more replies than I thought possible lol.

Tons of people are saying to just drink the bottle with BIL and bury the hatchet,

he actually doesn't drink bourbon he just likes to collect it so although he'd def try it if I open my bottle,

"finishing the bottle together and having a laugh" wouldn't actually do any good bc he wanted the unopened bottle for his collection.

For the people who are confused about the process, it is essentially a raffle, you get a random number

(you aren't switching with people and having a lower/higher number is irrelevent)

they call the number and you get to buy one bottle at a lower cost.

Finally, I thought this was clear in the post but no one seems to understand,

the entire event was essentially "who gets to win the Pappy" yes there are other bourbons for later called numbers,

but every single person was there for a chance to win the pappy, getting called and picking another bottle is actually inconceivable lmao

From a third-person perspective, the OP appears to have acted consistently with her own understanding of the situation.

She was already considering attending the bourbon event because she is a collector herself and knew the raffle offered a rare opportunity to purchase a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle at retail price. When her brother-in-law had to work, her sister invited her primarily for company.

Although her sister was clearly attending as his representative, the OP viewed herself as an independent participant pursuing the same opportunity for her own collection. At no point did she agree to purchase a bottle on his behalf or promise to surrender anything she won.

When her number was drawn early enough to buy the coveted bottle, she simply exercised the opportunity that came with her own raffle entry.

From the brother-in-law’s perspective, however, the situation likely feels very different. He had been excited about the event for weeks, only to lose his chance because of work obligations. Since his wife attended specifically to stand in for him, he may have unconsciously extended that assumption to the OP as well.

Watching someone else walk away with the exact bottle he had dreamed of owning and someone who arrived alongside his designated stand-in could understandably create a sense of “that should have been mine,” even if no actual agreement supported that belief.

Emotionally, disappointment often feels like injustice, especially when rare collectibles are involved.

Behavioral economist Daniel Kahneman, whose work on decision-making transformed modern psychology and economics, described how people experience losses more intensely than equivalent gains, a principle known as loss aversion.

Research consistently shows that people feel the pain of missing out on something highly valued more strongly than the pleasure of acquiring something of equal value. That psychological tendency can make near-misses feel deeply personal, even when the outcome was determined fairly.

That insight helps explain why “Pappygate” has lingered. The raffle itself was random. Every participant received an independent number, and no one was guaranteed an opportunity to purchase the prized bottle.

Had the brother-in-law attended, he might just as easily have drawn a later number and missed out entirely.

His frustration stems from imagining the best possible alternate reality, one in which he attended, received the OP’s favorable draw, and secured the bottle, while overlooking the many equally possible outcomes where he still would have gone home empty-handed.

Psychologically, people tend to compare reality with the most favorable hypothetical rather than the average likely result.

Ultimately, this disagreement seems less about ownership than about assumptions. The OP never believed she was representing anyone but herself, while her brother-in-law appears to have assumed everyone accompanying his wife was effectively participating on his behalf.

Neither interpretation was completely unreasonable, but only one was actually communicated. If there is a lesson in this story, it is that rare opportunities make implicit expectations especially risky.

A simple conversation beforehand, “If either of us gets the Pappy, whose is it?”, would probably have prevented a years-long family joke.

In the absence of that agreement, though, it is difficult to argue that she “stole” something that was awarded to her through a fair raffle and purchased with her own entry.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors said the sister was his proxy, so OP owed him nothing

anglflw − NTA His wife acted as his agent and made her choice for him.

mrstinyrick − NTA. Your sister was his official stand in, not you. She didn’t get the bottle, you did. It’s that simple.

Neveronlyadream − You're NTA. Your sister was his proxy, not you. He needs to take it up with her.

This group argued OP attended as a collector and won the bottle fairly

Flask725 − NTA, you were there as you also collect bourbon, not because you wanted to steal a very expensive bottle.

ten-toed-tuba − NTA - You went for yourself and to keep your sister company.

You're a known connoisseur and it's luck of the draw that you were called first.

I would offer to drink it with him when you open it. Or suggest a trip to Kentucky with clear expectations about who pays for what.

no_dice__ − NTA, that's your bourbon fare and square

This commenter believed the brother-in-law was acting out of jealousy

naraic- − NTA Anytime he mentions the pappy is his he gets demoted to dumbitch for the rest of the conversation/month.

Thats the only way to resolve this. He is jealous.

These users felt OP should have prioritized kindness and let him have the bottle

guadianariverdragon − I can genuinely see both sides here but I think while you've not done anything wrong, you are kind of the AH.

This is an event held near your sis and Bil (did you find out about it from them? ),

you weren't even 100% planning to go until his wife begged you, and you knew he was absolutely desperate to get a specific bottle.

Technically you are not in the wrong and owe him nothing, but I think a lot of people would feel betrayed by the way you acted.

Knowing how important this was to your BIL, the noble thing to do

would have probably been to let your sister go in first when your number was called.

ETA: you didn't even know about the event until the night before when he told you.

You 're still not technically in the wrong but absolutely YTA. Second edit: I am also curious what your BIL does for work.

Fine-Bumblebee-9427 − If you really would have gone without the invite, and you really value it more than your relationship, sure, NTA.

But it sounds like he cares more than you, and it would have been easy to be kind.

Potential_Shoe1068 − YTA. You knew he wanted it, your sister was there to buy that specific brand for him, and you bought it for yourself.

He’s correct that he would have purchased that bottle if not called in to work last minute. I’m surprised your sister didn’t say anything.

You could have chosen something else to grow your collection and let your BIL have something he has been trying to get.

But you didn’t. You made a choice, this is the outcome. Accept the L.

Do you think she was right to keep the bottle she fairly won, or would giving it to her brother-in-law have been the kinder choice?
