Woman Keeps Sacrificing Her Dream Trips for a Friend, Then Decides She’s Done Traveling Together

A vacation can look very different depending on who you travel with.

For some people, the goal is simply getting away without spending much.

For others, the excitement comes from discovering local culture, trying new food, and exploring everything a destination has to offer.

The original poster has always viewed travel as something deeply meaningful.

She spends time researching destinations, planning visits to museums and landmarks, and experiencing local cuisine.

However, when she traveled with her friend, she found herself constantly compromising to fit her friend’s financial limits.

After two trips where she felt like she sacrificed the things she loved, she is now wondering if refusing a third trip together makes her a bad friend.

Traveler feels torn after repeatedly sacrificing her dream trips to accommodate a friend’s budget

'AITA, because I dont want to travel anymore with my friend?'

Over the past year I (30F) and my friend (31F), have been on two trips together, each lasting

five days. On both trips, I was the one who lowered my standards for the sake of our

friendship. I accepted lower-quality accommodation (sharing a room and bathroom, and later

staying in a studio apartment even though I would have much preferred having my own

room). I agreed to eat at restaurants with limited menus where meals were around €15, and

we mostly went to bars with the cheapest alcohol because I wanted to accommodate her and

her budget.

After all of that, I constantly had to listen to her saying how much money she had spent, how

financially drained she was, how everything was expensive, how she had no money left, and

so on.

It makes me feel bad for two reasons. First, because I didn’t prioritize my own comfort even

though I could have afforded to and should have. Second, because I feel like she’s making me

feel guilty about money, even though I never pressured her to spend beyond her means.

I also suggested that if there were things we wanted to do separately, we could split up for

an hour or two each day so we could each enjoy the activities that interested us.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t an option for her.

She’s already planning a third trip together, but I don’t want to travel like this anymore. Tried

to tell her indirectly that Im not traveling anymore, she just laugh because she knows I live

and work for travel.

I absolutely love culture, history, architecture, museums, and food. When I travel somewhere

new, I really immerse myself in the destination. I spend weeks researching it beforehand, and

that preparation makes the whole experience even more meaningful. I usually visit one or two

museums or attractions every day when I travel. On our last two trips, I visited only one

museum in total.

I also love cooking, so I really enjoy exploring different restaurants and trying as many dishes

as possible. Some of the meals I discover while traveling end up becoming part of my regular

cooking repertoire at home.. AITA for not wanting to travel with her anymore?

Travel has a way of revealing whether two people are truly compatible.

Friends can care deeply about one another in everyday life yet discover that they have completely different ideas of what makes a meaningful vacation.

The problem is rarely that one person is “doing it wrong.”

It is that both people want fundamentally different experiences, and repeated compromise by only one side eventually turns enjoyment into resentment.

This story illustrates that imbalance clearly.

Over the course of two five-day trips, the poster consistently adjusted her expectations to match her friend’s budget and travel style.

She accepted accommodations she would not normally choose, ate at less expensive restaurants despite enjoying culinary exploration, and gave up much of the cultural itinerary that makes traveling rewarding for her.

Instead of spending days immersed in museums, architecture, and local history, she visited only one museum across both vacations.

Despite those compromises, she also found herself repeatedly listening to complaints about how expensive everything felt, leaving her with the uncomfortable sense that she was somehow responsible for financial pressure she had already worked hard to reduce.

The disappointment stems less from spending money and more from realizing she sacrificed experiences she genuinely valued while still feeling guilty afterward.

An important perspective is that compatibility matters just as much in friendships as it does in romantic relationships, particularly when travel is involved.

Budget, pace, interests, and expectations all influence how people experience a destination. Someone who enjoys leisurely mornings, inexpensive meals, and staying together all day is not wrong.

Likewise, someone who plans museum visits months in advance, enjoys discovering local cuisine, and occasionally prefers independent exploration is not wrong either.

Problems arise when one person’s preferences consistently become the default while the other quietly adapts until the trip no longer reflects what they themselves enjoy.

Healthy compromise means both people occasionally bend. It does not mean one person repeatedly gives things up while the other remains largely unchanged.

Viewed through that lens, the poster’s reluctance to plan another trip does not necessarily reflect a failure of friendship.

It may simply reflect the realization that they are excellent friends but incompatible travel partners.

Those are two very different things.

Continuing to travel together out of obligation would likely deepen frustration on both sides, especially if each vacation ends with one person feeling deprived and the other feeling financially overwhelmed.

The broader lesson is that saying “no” to a particular way of spending time together is not the same as saying “no” to the friendship itself.

Some friends make wonderful dinner companions, others are ideal hiking partners, and some simply travel differently.

Recognizing those differences before resentment grows is often kinder than forcing another trip that leaves both people dissatisfied.

Protecting the experiences that bring joy, whether that means wandering through museums alone or savoring a memorable local meal, is not selfish.

It is an honest acknowledgment of what makes travel meaningful in the first place.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These Redditors agreed that friends can be incompatible as travel companions and that ending shared trips would not make the poster wrong

CharrAnn − nta, you can be compatible as friends without being compatible as travel

partners

AltruisticTour5827 − Travel is an "experience good. " You don't get a redo once the trip is

over, so wanting to actually experience it your way is perfectly reasonable, not selfish. A lot of

people, even couples, don't have compatible travel styles, and they usually don't find that out

until they actually try it together. You've tried 2x now. That's enough data to know this is a

mismatch.

NTA for wanting to stop repeating it a third time.

Educational-Bug-5215 − NTA. Solo travel sounds like it’s right up your alley. If telling her

indirectly didn’t work, then best to do it directly— tell her you both have different travel

styles, and that’s okay, they just don’t work together.

hypergraphia − NTA, but you could become one if you handle this badly. There’s nothing

wrong with being incompatible travelling partners, just be kind when you share the news.

ConstantlyCryingGirl − NAH. Being friends and being travel compatible are not the same. I

used to travel with my dad, who is basically me personality-wise, but he is very much a "hitch

hike and minimalist accommodation" person. Then I travel with my husband we have

different preferences for travel, which leads to experiences neither of us would have ever

considered, but we both like much nicer accommodations.

No answer is incorrect, and no one is the a__hole, it's just different styles of travel.

the_elephant_sack − “We have different expectations about what we want out of traveling,

and I don’t think we are compatible to travel with each other. I still really value our friendship.

And I wouldn’t be opposed to hanging out in some foreign city if we happen to have

overlapping trips. But I do not think we should plan another trip together. ”

OkeyDokey654 − NTA. “You and I like different things when we travel, so it’s better to do it

separately so neither of us misses out on what we enjoy. ”

This group advised having a direct but kind conversation, clearly explaining that their travel styles simply do not match

TeenySod − Why would you be TA? :/ - NTA "Our holiday expectations are too different - this

doesn't stop us from being friends, I just prefer to travel alone. " Rinse. Repeat. Edit: explicitly,

do not get into details or arguments. Be firm that she is not to book anything on your behalf,

end of.

BusinessForeign7052 − NTA - But be direct, her feelings may be hurt and she may lash out

but some friends are not travelling friends. My best friend in the whole world who I love more

than most family members is not someone I travel with because he is a picky eater and I eat

everything and want to try all the things.

You can still do a trip or 2 with her but set your boundaries and enjoy yourself.

BoogieShoes11 − NTA I would just be very blunt with her. Something like hey, I want to make

sure you’re not booking anything for another trip. I’m going to be traveling solo etc.

These commenters suspected the friend wanted the poster to subsidize a more expensive vacation experience

Katerh − NTA. She’s not going to take it well because it’s obvious she needs you to subsidize

her cost. So if you won’t go, she can’t go. But you need to be honest. “Friend i need to

decline any future trips. Our travel styles and entertainment are just too different and it

seems to result in neither of us enjoying ourselves very much.

I think we both need to find more suitable travel companions moving forward. ”

sadistic-witch − NTA, but she's complaining about money so much because she wants you to

pay extra to upgrade her experience too, y'know.

Travel is supposed to be enjoyable, but these vacations left both friends wanting completely different experiences.

Many readers felt neither person was necessarily wrong, they simply had incompatible travel styles and budgets.

The real issue was that one friend repeatedly expected compromises without recognizing the sacrifices being made.

Rather than forcing another disappointing trip, many agreed it would be healthier to travel separately and preserve the friendship.

What do you think? Would you keep compromising for the sake of the friendship, or politely decline future trips and find a travel companion whose style matches your own?
