MIL Reports “Dangerous Dog” to Animal Control, But Her Own Neglected Dog Gets Taken Away

in Social Issues

A false accusation can be frustrating enough on its own, but it becomes even more complicated when it involves a beloved pet.

For one homeowner, a surprise visit from animal control turned into an investigation that uncovered a much bigger issue.

The complaint claimed that the family dog was aggressive and unsafe around children.

However, the reality was very different.

The animal control officer found a well-documented rescue dog that was calm, friendly, and simply enjoying a nap.

After learning who had made the report, the owner provided evidence of a long-running family dispute.

What followed was an unexpected chain of events that exposed concerns about another dog’s wellbeing.

'Both dogs are safe. SOB is dead to me?'

On occasion I work from home Friday was one of those days. I am relaxed,

happy and two hours from my weekend when the fur ball let out a ruff

letting me know someone was about to knock at the door.

That someone was animal control. They got an email reporting a large,

untrained, vicious dog at my home that had unsupervised access to a baby.

(Note: there are no kids that live in my house we are empty nesters and

enjoy the empty nest. I presume the report was referencing my grand

daughter who is rarely around the dog and IF she is there are three or four

adults around as in within inches of the pair).

While the gent is telling me all of this the 'vicious dog' was sitting on my

foot, alternating between yawning and sniffing the animal officers pockets

hoping for treats.

See animal control isn't DCFS/CPS, they will show the owner of the animal

their proof. This email was from SOB's email addie.

Said officer was invited in, the dog got a treat and then flopped on the

couch to snooze. Horrifically vicious isn't he?

I showed the nice officer all of the fur balls paperwork, shot records, rescue

records, training certificates and yes his behavioral analysis that the rescue

had done. It shows clearly his aggression to male dogs while having no

issues with: anything else.

The officer could not understand why someone would report my dog. I

offered clarity pointing to SOB's email address explained who she was

(JNMIL) and all the drama from her last visit nearly a year ago with her

untreated seizure suffering senior MALE dog. And her upcoming visit

where she was told no on the dog again with the reason of our dog is

highly agressive with male dogs.

I was even nice enough to pull up and yes print out emails from nearly a

year ago when SOB was going insane about her dog not being welcome in

our house that clearly stated she wasn't giving him the pheno because the

oils worked better.

Apparently our nice officer contacted the animal control/ animal cops in

SOB state who went out to do a wellness check on her dog. Who was

actively having a seizure when the officer arrived.

Apparently SOB showed her ass/attitude to the officer and Her dog was

taken into protective custody and there is a hearing to find out IF she will

be getting him back.

Lab results are pending to see if he has any seizure meds in his system. Oh,

and those oils? She was applying them to the pads of his feet. All four feet

showed mild scarring from burning/irritation or active burns/irritation from

the oils.

All of the above DH found out from his dad who called to find out why I

reported her. When he found out it was revealed and how it was revealed

during defending my dog from a malicious report he simply sighed and said

he was going to miss the dog.

FIL is feeling horrid, said he took SOBs word that the oils were safe

because she said she researched their use. And he admits he didn't push

the issue and never saw the scarring/burns in the dogs feet (The dog is

part/ mostly cocker spaniel he has some seriously f__ry feet, so you have to

part fur and really look, you would not see it at a glance). So yeah, he feels

guilty and knows he should not have taken her word but should have talked

to the vet himself.

So, b__ch played a game to have my dog seized so she could visit with her

dog and ended up losing her dog in the process.

She is no longer allowed in my house. Ever. I am still having day dreams of

driving 20 hours and showing her MY vicious side.

And I seriously hope her dog is on the meds he needs and can live out

what's left of his senior years in health and comfort.

False reports made out of spite rarely end the way the person making them expects.

When authorities investigate allegations, they are not obligated to stop with the original complaint.

If evidence uncovered during the investigation points to genuine concerns elsewhere, those concerns may become the real focus.

In that sense, malicious complaints sometimes expose the complainant’s own actions instead of the intended target.

According to this account, the poster was visited by animal control after someone alleged that a large, dangerous dog had unsupervised access to a baby.

The accusation appeared inconsistent with what officers found.

The dog reportedly behaved calmly throughout the visit, and the owner was able to provide veterinary records, vaccination history, training certificates, and behavioral assessments indicating that the dog’s only documented issue involved aggression toward unfamiliar male dogs.

The complaint allegedly came from the poster’s mother-in-law, who had previously been told she could not bring her own elderly male dog into the home because of that specific behavioral concern.

After learning the broader family context, authorities in the mother-in-law’s jurisdiction reportedly conducted a welfare check on her dog.

According to the account, officers discovered the animal actively experiencing a seizure, raising concerns that prescribed medication was not being administered and that alternative treatments had caused irritation to the dog’s paws.

The investigation ultimately shifted away from the original complaint and toward the welfare of the complainant’s own pet.

One of the striking aspects of this story is the contrast between documentation and accusation.

The poster was able to respond calmly because years of responsible ownership had produced veterinary records, training documentation, and rescue evaluations that supported the dog’s history.

While paperwork alone cannot resolve every dispute, maintaining thorough medical and behavioral records can provide valuable context when allegations arise.

Animal welfare experts consistently emphasize that seizure disorders in pets require ongoing veterinary supervision and prescribed treatment plans.

Organizations such as the American Veterinary Medical Association advise owners to work closely with licensed veterinarians when managing chronic medical conditions rather than substituting unproven alternatives for prescribed care.

Likewise, the American Animal Hospital Association encourages evidence-based treatment and regular monitoring for animals with neurological disorders to protect both quality of life and long-term health.

Another important element is the emotional impact on family relationships.

Disagreements over pets are often manageable through clear boundaries, but deliberately involving authorities based on allegedly false claims can severely damage trust.

Once someone attempts to use official systems as a weapon in a personal conflict, future interactions naturally become far more difficult.

At the same time, the story also highlights the position of the father-in-law, who reportedly relied on assurances that the alternative treatment was safe and later expressed regret for not verifying that information independently.

The broader lesson is that safeguarding both children and animals depends on honest communication and responsible care, not retaliation.

Reporting genuine welfare concerns is an important public responsibility, but making allegations for personal revenge risks unintended consequences when investigators uncover evidence of actual neglect elsewhere.

In this account, the attempted harm to one household ultimately resulted in authorities focusing on the welfare of the very animal the complainant was responsible for protecting.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors urged the family to document everything, install cameras, alert authorities, and prepare for further retaliation such as false police or CPS reports

dillGherkin − This is a prime example of why storing all the crazy b__lshit

vitriol they send and keeping your paperwork in order will help protect you.

Document, document DOCUMENT! I'm so glad that your dog is still with

such a loving owner and that hers has been taken away.

mgush5 − Get cameras and stuff like that she is gonna be majorly angry so

r/homedefense is necessary. File a pre-emptive report with your local

police sataion/sheriff so if she starts something they can send someone

out to deal with it and have details on file early. She's gonna be foaming at

the mouth by the sounds of it

Madame_Kitsune98 − Make sure you tell your offspring with the offspring

of their own to batten down the hatches and ready themselves for a CPS

call. SOB ain’t done. You said no to her dog, she tried getting your dog

removed to get her way, and it backfired spectacularly - but she mentioned

the baby.

She will now resort to calling CPS, and sobbing into the phone about how

she is “so worried” that those unfit parents leave the poor baby around a

“vicious animal”, and probably that they don’t feed the baby, they live in

filth, and so on. Make sure they have copies of everything, and can shut

that s__t down.

Even better if this stupid b__ch tells them who she is, and they can get her

for malicious filing, and wasting resources.

These commenters condemned the use of essential oils on pets, stressing that such treatments can be toxic, painful, and dangerously neglectful

Onequestion0110 − As someone who actually uses some essential oils for

legitimate purposes (mostly cleaning related, a few DIY items, and no

cancer-curing), I just want to say this: #Never, ever, expose pets to essential

oils. Dogs skin are more sensitive and easily burned than ours. Additionally,

their toxin-removal systems are different as well. A few drops of some oils

will k__l a cat.

Do not apply oils to animals, and never feed it to them.

Boo155 − I wish all animal control departments were as conscientious and

effective as yours and the one is SOB's area. I hope cruelty charges are

brought against SOB, both for not medicating her dog for seizures using

medications that actually work, AND for applying essential oils to his poor

feet.

Elfanara − That poor baby. I work in the veterinary field, and the stuff with

her dog happens way too often. I've even had to talk my own family off the

ledge a couple times from doing "homeopathic" remedies instead of actual

necessary medication. But I digress. I'm totally with you on her being dead

to you. Some people may say "its just a dog" but no.

They are family. I see this as equivalent to calling CPS. Thankfully you had a

good experience. A lot of times animal control takes the dog first and

investigates later and its some crazy fight to get your dog back. I'm glad

both dogs are safe.

elizabeth-san − You may want to put a trigger warning for animal cruelty

(because it is cruel what she did to that dog). I burst into tears when I read

about what the oils had done.

That being said, I'm glad that the timing of the cops' arrival was perfect in

that they could rescue doggo and I too hope that he will recover and have a

good life going forward.

These users also blamed the father-in-law for enabling the abuse and failing to intervene despite the dog’s obvious suffering

summersla − Honestly no sympathy whatsoever for FIL yeah he might not

have seen the burn on his feet but you said that when he was on meds his

seizures where very mild, brief and didn't happen often and without them

he went through a lot o pain.

.. He had to have noticed but chose to allow it to continue because the

alternative would have been to stop enabeling SOB. The dog is better of

far away from both of them and I hope they find someone who will actually

CARE for them.

highoncatnipbrownies − THANK YOU! \- For using "Both dogs are safe" as

the very first sentence of your title, that was very kind of you and my feels

appreciate it. Also, praise be to you the doggie rescuer! That poor spaniel.

How could someone be so cruel and someone else be so ignorant? FIL just

let that dog suffer needlessly and did nothing.

Your MIL may have some form of pet Munchausen syndrome by proxy or

something. ... she would be dead to me too.

What started as a malicious attempt to have one dog removed ended with authorities discovering another animal that genuinely needed help.

Many readers would likely agree that filing a false report is bad enough, but doing so while neglecting a senior dog’s medical needs made the situation even more troubling.

In the end, the investigation revealed the real victim wasn’t the “vicious” dog at all, it was the one being denied proper treatment.

What do you think? Was the outcome simply karma at work, or was it an inevitable consequence of someone trying to weaponize the system? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
