He Pinned His Girlfriend Down and Refused to Stop Tickling Her. She Fought Back, and the Internet Had a Lot to Say

in Social Issues

What started as an attempt to “cheer someone up” quickly turned into a relationship-ending realization.

A 20-year-old woman took to Reddit after a heated argument with her boyfriend left her questioning whether she’d gone too far.

She had been lying on his bed in a bad mood when he suddenly jumped on top of her, pinned her down, and began tickling her.

According to her, she repeatedly told him to stop and get off, but he ignored her.

Feeling trapped, overwhelmed, and unable to make him listen, she eventually struck him in the groin to force him to stop.

Instead of apologizing for ignoring her requests, her boyfriend insisted she was the one in the wrong.

The situation sparked a passionate debate online, but for many readers, the issue wasn’t really about tickling at all.

It was about boundaries, consent, and what happens when someone decides that “stop” doesn’t actually mean stop.

Here’s how it all unfolded.

Not the actual photo

AITAH for punching bf in his jewels for tickling me?

A couple days ago I (20F) was in a bad mood. I was laying on my boyfriends (21M) bed when

he threw himself on top of me and started pinning me down. He said he wasn’t meaning to tickle me,

but I was indeed being tickled regardless of his hands being on my ribs or not. Anyways, during this time

probably 3-5 minutes, I was consistently saying “stop” and “get off”, trying everything I could to get him off (like using my arms and legs),

but he simply wasn’t budging. At this point, I was extremely overwhelmed, couldn’t breathe, and

now(internally)freaking out cause he wasn’t stopping. I finally saw an opening,

so I lightly tapped him in the balls. This got him to stop and say “that’s not cool, don’t do that” to which I responded

“I will do it again, stop”. He then proceeded to pin me down and tickle me. I saw another opportunity, so I took it

this time hitting him harder. Thankfully, this did get him to stop, but he then got super upset with me for doing that.

He’s very set that I’m in the wrong and I’m set that that was justified.

When we were talking about this later, he said he started doing this because he wanted to see me smile and feel better.

PERSONALLY, I don’t see why that would ever be a solution to make someone feel better,

considering tickling is essentially a form of torture. I expressed remorse, because I never wanted to hurt him,

even though I intentionally ball-tapped him,  I just wanted him to stop.

He said he thought everything was okay because I was laughing, but it was an uncomfortable/nervous laugh that

I always do when being tickled. He said it isn’t ever cool, but especially because I never gave any signs I wasn’t having a good time.

He said I never told him to get off me, raised my voice, or told him I was serious.

I feel like I shouldn’t have to raise my voice for him to know I’m serious?

Also, I did say get off?? Also confused because was the first ball-tap not a warning???

And to clarify, I absolutely agree that hitting someone in the balls isn’t cool in the slightest.

But it’s not like I did it as a way to play around, I was freaking out and he wasn’t listening.

Thank you for reading lol UPDATE: I’m breaking up with him! Thank you for taking the time out of y’all’s day to lmk he really is the asshole.

I didn’t know just how serious it was till I read the comments.

I truly didn’t expect this to get so much attention, I wish I could respond to everyone, but know I’ve been trying to read everything yall say!

Also, we’ve been together for two years. Reading this has made me put some things together of him disregarding my clear boundaries..

When “Trying to Help” Crossed a Line

The young woman explained that she was having a rough day and was lying on her boyfriend’s bed when he suddenly threw himself on top of her.

At first, he later claimed he wasn’t intentionally trying to tickle her. But intentional or not, that’s exactly what was happening.

For several minutes, she said she repeatedly told him to stop and get off her.

She pushed with her arms and legs, tried to free herself, and made it clear she wanted the interaction to end.

Nothing worked.

Her boyfriend was physically stronger and continued pinning her down.

As the situation dragged on, her discomfort turned into panic.

She described feeling overwhelmed, unable to breathe properly, and increasingly frightened because the person who was supposed to care about her wasn’t listening.

Eventually she found an opening and lightly tapped him in the groin.

It worked.

For a moment.

He stopped, complained that what she did wasn’t cool, and then immediately resumed pinning her down and tickling her.

At that point, she struck him again, harder this time.

Only then did he finally stop.

Rather than acknowledging why she’d reacted that way, however, he became angry and insisted she had crossed a line.

The irony wasn’t lost on many readers.

The first strike had already communicated exactly what her words had been communicating for several minutes: stop.

He simply chose not to listen.

The Real Issue Wasn’t Tickling

Later, the boyfriend defended himself by saying he was only trying to make her smile and feel better.

On paper, that explanation sounds harmless.

In practice, many people found it troubling.

The woman wasn’t asking to be entertained. She wasn’t initiating playful wrestling.

She was upset and wanted space. Instead of asking what was wrong or how he could help, he decided that physically overpowering her and forcing a reaction was the solution.

Even more concerning was his reasoning afterward.

He argued that because she was laughing, he believed she was enjoying herself.

But laughter during tickling is often involuntary. It’s a reflex, not necessarily a sign of enjoyment.

The woman pointed out that she repeatedly told him to stop. She questioned why she should have needed to raise her voice or sound angrier for him to take her seriously.

Readers largely agreed.

The moment someone says “stop,” the burden shifts to the other person to listen.

It shouldn’t require a special tone of voice, a certain facial expression, or a formal declaration of seriousness.

A clear boundary had already been communicated.

Expert Insight: Why Ignoring “Stop” Can Be So Damaging

According to therapist Kaytee Gillis, LCSW, healthy relationships rely on mutual respect for physical and emotional boundaries.

When one partner repeatedly ignores those boundaries, even during situations they view as playful, it can create feelings of powerlessness, anxiety, and mistrust.

Experts often emphasize that consent is not limited to sexual situations. It applies to all forms of physical interaction.

Respecting another person’s “no,” “stop,” or “I don’t like this” helps establish safety and trust within a relationship.

That context helps explain why so many readers reacted strongly to this story.

The concern wasn’t simply that the boyfriend tickled her too long. It was that he heard her objections, understood them, and decided they didn’t matter because he believed he knew better.

When someone repeatedly overrides another person’s clearly stated boundaries, the damage often extends far beyond the original incident.

Trust begins to erode.

And without trust, relationships become difficult to sustain.

Reflection & The Bigger Picture

One of the most revealing parts of the story wasn’t the tickling itself.

It was what happened afterward.

People make mistakes. Partners misread situations. Sometimes playful behavior goes too far without malicious intent.

But healthy relationships are usually defined by what happens next.

When someone realizes they’ve crossed a line, they listen, apologize, and adjust their behavior.

This boyfriend did the opposite.

He focused almost entirely on the fact that he got hurt while minimizing the repeated requests that led to the situation in the first place.

For many readers, that response raised far more concerns than the tickling ever did.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

The overwhelming majority of commenters sided with the woman. Many pointed out that “stop” is a complete sentence and doesn’t require additional clarification. 2hounddogs − NTA. Stop means stop. No means no. I hate being tickled. It isn't funny.

C_Condor − NTA. Re-read this and really think about the implications of him ignoring you saying to stop.

If you want to try and have another conversation with him about it and see if he can understand you that's valid.

Me personally, I wouldn't want to be with someone like that.

DamnitGravity − So. .. you're upset and he decides the best way to make you feel better is to hold you down and

force you to laugh? Instead of, I dunno, asking what's wrong and if there's anything he can do to help or support you?

Saying 'you were laughing so I thought you enjoyed it' is like saying 'you were wearing a miniskirt and crop top

so I thought you wanted me to use your body for my pleasure'.

You say this happened a few days ago and he still refuses to take accountability,

and is continuing to deny you told him to get off or to stop, and is claiming that you 'weren't serious'.

Which means he DID hear you say 'get off' and 'stop'. He just decided that

'no didn't mean no' because you were laughing. Which is an involuntary response.

Similar to how he likely swore his head off and clutched at himself after you punched him in the balls.

NTA and I would think VERY hard about this relationship. You don't say your ages,

and maybe he's never been taught 'no means no, even when I'm laughing, or drunk,

or I had initially said yes but then changed my mind and said no'.

The only time no doesn't mean no is when you've discussed safewords and boundaries thoroughly,

and you know that you can trust him to respect them. Which, currently, he does not seem the type that would.

ETA: Just checked this and thanks for the awards!

Others highlighted that laughter during tickling is often involuntary and cannot be used as evidence of consent.

Purdygreen − NTA - my dad loved tickling my sister and I every night before bed.

My sister, to this day, says she absolutely loved it. I hated it. I would breakout in sweat while brushing my teeth before

bed knowing the torture that was coming. Finally when I was like 13 or something, I kicked him in the balls, and I did it hard.

I had begged him to stop for years. Every single person I tell this story too always interrupts this part of my story to say "GOOD! "

He deserved it and he is awful to be playing victim. I would be seriously uncomfortable with what he did and how he is handling it.

Nearby_Switch_5987 − I am really concerned about how his behavior could escalate in the future.

Yellowtail119 − You are not the a__hole. Not one bit. And please don’t EVER let him make you think otherwise.

I am 33. I see 20 year old me so much in your post. I wish I could go back in time and shake her.

Tell her “This man doesn’t love you, he loves having something to control.

It’s NOT your job to run yourself into the ground to try and help him. He hurts you. On purpose.

Because he enjoys it. ” Get out now. Don’t be like me. Don’t waste the precious first years of your 20s on some dumb f__k. Please.

Several readers expressed concern about the boyfriend’s refusal to take responsibility afterward. Some viewed the behavior as a serious warning sign about how he handled boundaries in general.

Similar_Corner8081 − NTA He should have stopped when you told him. He's old enough to understand being told to stop.

theultragecko − Guys? ! **Hey guys? !?** You listening? Do you REALLY **STILL** need to be told that stop means….

STOP? !? Still? It’s 2026. Women can even drive cars vote now! !! The pinning down.

The continuing after you expressed discomfort. Overpowering you.

IMO, he got off easy with a bop to the nuts. You were probably within your legal rights to hurt him much worse.

And this is a guy talking…I know what a hit to jewels feels like. Now ***he’s*** upset? Say it with me…

“F__K HIM! ” You were justified in doing that and more. The fact that he’s guilt tripping you now is the grade-a sign of an abuser.

Please…you and all women. Never, EVER feel bad for defending yourselves.

NTA, but please get this shitbag out of your life.

Spinnerofyarn − NTA. I call b__lshit on him thinking you were enjoying it.

You told him to stop. Laughing when being tickled is an automatic response. Many people can’t control it.

You kneeing him once was the metaphorical sign from God that you wanted him to stop. He assaulted you, full stop.

Gee, by his logic, it must have been ok that you hit him in the nuts twice since he went right back to tickling you

because he looked like he was having fun! It’s not like he told you loudly to stop.

Vandreeson − NTA. I'm a male. The second you said stop and to get off, he should have stopped.

The first time you hit him was a warning. The second time he felt it more. It shouldn't have taken a second time.

He showed you he doesn't care about what you say or how you feel. He physically assaulted you.

He doesn't get to be upset when you fight back.

Sometimes a conflict reveals much more than the argument itself.

This wasn’t ultimately a story about tickling or even about getting hit in the groin. It was about whether one person respected another person’s right to say no.

Most people can forgive a misunderstanding.

What is far harder to overlook is someone hearing “stop” repeatedly and deciding it doesn’t count.

In the end, the woman’s decision to leave seemed to resonate with many readers because it reflected a simple principle that healthy relationships depend on: respect isn’t something that gets negotiated after a boundary is crossed. It’s something that should be there from the start.

Was her reaction excessive, or was it the only way she could make herself heard when her words weren’t enough?
