Woman Offers Cousin Her Kidney, Then Takes Back the Gift After Being Treated Like a Servant

When someone is going through a serious health crisis, it is natural for family members to want to support them.

But does needing help give someone permission to treat others however they want?

One woman found herself facing that difficult question after agreeing to donate a kidney to her cousin.

She was prepared to go through a major life-changing procedure to save a family member, but the relationship began to deteriorate when her cousin started acting controlling and demanding toward everyone around her.

After one argument pushed things too far, the donor made a decision that shocked the entire family.

Woman agrees to donate a kidney to her cousin, but their relationship suddenly changes

'AITA for not giving my cousin my kidney?'

I, “Nikki“ (27F) have a cousin “Tessa” (30F) that was in need of a kidney.

Long story short, I was the only one that matched. We were set up to do

everything in 2 months until she started acting like a tyrant. Our family was

planning a birthday party for an older relative so Tessa created a group

chat. Out of no where, Tessa started acting like the “family manager“ and it

was starting to become a bit irritating. The final straw was when we all

were deciding on a gift for the relative & she started demanding we get a

specific gift. MIND YOU: she was not contributing a DIME to this gift. She

used the excuse that bc of her illness, she couldn’t work that much- but had

the energy to boss us around 🙄. Anyway, when the family finally told

Tessa that the relative wouldn’t really like the gift & we should get

something else, she lost her sh!t!!! She wrote a dissertation in the chat

about how “clueless“ the family is & we don’t appreciate anyone. ATP, I‘d

finally had enough & told her she was “the rudest sick person I’d ever seen

& that she needed a lesson about being appreciative of ppl that loved her”.

Tessa was dumb enough to ask me “And how exactly do you plan to teach

me Nikki?!” I simply replied, “Go find another kidney b!tch.” & left the chat.

The family told me I took it too far. I told all of them to kiss my a\\ since

they enjoy kissing Tessa’s. I felt like they were scared to stand up to her bc

of her illness but in my eyes, that’s no excuse to be a complete a\\ to ppl. I

blocked her & anyone else that felt the need to speak on my kidney. Tessa

cried and begged my sister to convince me to change my mind but my

sister respected my decision. Bc of this, it took Tessa another four months

to find another donor. My family still thinks I’m wrong. So… was I the a

hole?

Acts of generosity often come with an unspoken expectation: gratitude and respect.

When someone receives an extraordinary gift from another person, especially one involving personal sacrifice, the relationship is usually built on trust, appreciation, and mutual care.

However, illness can also create complicated family dynamics where people become afraid to challenge someone because they feel guilty or responsible for their situation.

According to this account, the poster, Nikki, was the only compatible kidney donor for her cousin Tessa, who needed a transplant.

The family had begun preparing for the donation process when tensions developed during a separate family group chat about an elderly relative’s birthday celebration.

Tessa reportedly began taking control of the conversation, acting as the organizer and insisting that the family purchase a specific gift despite not contributing financially.

When relatives disagreed, she allegedly responded with a long message criticizing them for being inconsiderate.

Frustrated after feeling that Tessa was disrespecting the same people who were supporting her, Nikki confronted her.

The argument escalated, and when Tessa challenged Nikki about how she would teach her a lesson, Nikki responded by telling her to find another kidney donor.

She left the chat, withdrew from the donation process, and blocked relatives who criticized her decision. Tessa later found another donor several months afterward.

The difficult part of this situation is that two things can be true at the same time.

Tessa’s illness does not excuse treating people poorly, especially someone who was willing to undergo major surgery to save her life.

A person receiving help is still responsible for how they speak to and treat others. Compassion does not require someone to accept disrespect indefinitely.

At the same time, organ donation is an exceptionally serious decision. A kidney donation is not comparable to withdrawing from a normal disagreement or ending a casual favor.

Living donors undergo medical evaluations, surgery, recovery, and potential long-term health considerations.

Because of that, many people view the decision to donate as something that should ideally be based on a stable commitment rather than being tied to the emotional outcome of a family conflict.

Medical ethics discussions around living organ donation often emphasize that donors must make decisions voluntarily and without coercion.

Organizations such as the National Kidney Foundation highlight that potential donors should be fully informed and emotionally prepared before proceeding.

A donor is allowed to reconsider, especially if the relationship dynamics make them uncomfortable or pressured.

From a relationship perspective, however, the central wound appears to be deeper than the argument over a birthday gift.

Nikki seems to have felt that her enormous willingness to help was being taken for granted.

The kidney became symbolic of a larger issue: whether Tessa valued the person making the sacrifice or only the help she could provide.

For Tessa, losing a donor after the confrontation was likely frightening and painful, but it also demonstrated that relationships built around receiving support still require respect.

The broader lesson is that gratitude matters, particularly when someone is making an extraordinary sacrifice.

Serious illness can explain difficult emotions, fear, and frustration, but it does not give anyone permission to control or mistreat the people trying to help them.

At the same time, decisions involving life-changing medical support are best handled with careful reflection rather than made in the heat of anger.

The most important question is not only whether someone deserves help, but whether both people can maintain the trust and respect necessary for such a profound act of generosity.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters focused on bodily autonomy, arguing that nobody is obligated to donate an organ and that the decision ultimately belongs to the donor

Mr_Fuzzo − Nobody should be obligated to give up part of their body for another human.

Capt-geraldstclair − You are not obligated to give up your own organs.

holy_chewchew − Your body, your choice, NTA

Idonotgiveacrap − NTA. I would never donate one of my kidneys

unwillingly. Life will be harder with only one kidney, so don't do it unless

you're 100% on board.

CarpetScary684 − Your not wrong and you made the correct decision.

These Redditors believed the cousin’s behavior caused the situation herself, arguing that receiving a life-saving gift does not excuse treating the donor poorly

CrossSoul − No. She fucked around, she found out. Plain and simple.

AbigailTrueBlue − Donating a kidney comes with many risks. Huge risks.

Your original agreement was unbelievably selfless. AH Tessa showed she

wasn't grateful at all, and you were on solid ground to withdraw. Let this

be a life-long lesson to her. Your judgmental AH family can donate their

own kidneys. Not their business. NTAH.

Naive_Market_9688 − Is someone who is the recipient of a kidney but

never acted like a tyrant or a b**** let me tell you that I think it was very

gracious of you to offer your kidney while your cousin apparently doesn't

appreciate how incredible the gift that was. Did you take it too far? Who

know? Did she deserve it? Most likely.

But it's water under the bridge now and you still have both of your kidneys.

Consider yourself having dodged a bullet.

Nikki was willing to make an incredible sacrifice for her cousin, but the situation changed when she felt that gratitude was replaced by entitlement.

Donating an organ is one of the biggest acts of kindness someone can offer, and it’s understandable why being treated poorly during such a vulnerable process would create resentment.

At the same time, the argument reached a breaking point where both sides said things they couldn’t easily take back.

Many people would likely focus on the bigger question: does someone’s illness excuse controlling or disrespectful behavior?

Compassion for someone’s medical situation and expecting basic respect can exist at the same time.

A person needing help is still responsible for how they treat the people supporting them.

What do you think? Did Nikki cross a line by withdrawing her offer, or was Tessa’s behavior enough to show she didn’t deserve such a life-changing sacrifice?
