His Mother-in-Law Secretly Threw Away His Chemotherapy Because She Believed Herbal Tea Could Cure Cancer

in Social Issues

A cancer diagnosis is devastating the first time. Hearing those words for a second time can feel almost impossible to process.

For one 30-year-old man, life had finally settled into something peaceful after surviving cancer as a teenager. Sixteen years later, during what was supposed to be a routine medical check for work, doctors found another tumor. This time it was unrelated to his first illness, but his oncologist warned that it was aggressive and required immediate treatment before it could spread.

Thankfully, he wasn’t facing the battle alone. His wife became his biggest source of strength, taking on extra responsibilities around the house while reminding him that his only job was getting well. Unfortunately, someone else in the family had very different ideas about how cancer should be treated, and those beliefs would lead to a decision that left doctors stunned.

Here’s what happened.

'I need to vent to someone: my husband's father laughed at everyone taking COVID seriously, and then it killed him.

Now his mom is lashing out at me for "being mean" and "infringing his privacy" and says I turned his family against him. But I didn't, it was literally him?'

My husband's father was one of the big COVID naysayers. He told everyone who would listen that it was bull, nothing to worry about, etc. Then he started making fun...

Commented on any photo or post mentioning wearing masks and insulted people - basically if you wear a mask you're an i__ot sheep. He took a selfie video inside a...

"watch me make the snowflake sandwich slave panic" and then went up to the counter and stood on his tip toes to purposefully cough a bunch over the glass at...

Stupid ridiculous irresponsible rude BS. He tried to organize a local rally against business closures (no one showed). He was terrible.

I told him off on the phone about his Subway video. I work in the medical field and have witnessed COVID deaths and nothing he was doing was funny.

He still didn't take me seriously, laughed a bunch and he posted it on my Facebook wall saying "here it is again in case you change your mind." I stopped...

so I didn't see it until I started getting calls and texts about what a l__atic he is from my sisters.

This set off a bit of a family firestorm because I am Facebook friends with many of his family members who were understandably upset by him being an ass. He...

What goes around, came around. He got COVID and he died. I am sorry that his family has lost a member and I am sorry for my husband, but I've...

Well my MIL (his wife) has somehow turned this around into my fault. She does not understand Facebook and she is CONVINCED that I took the video he texted me...

But I actually didn't. That was HIM posting it to my wall. I have explained it to her, my husband has explained it to her, we have all explained it...

She has gone as far to say that his death is "on my shoulders" because I turned his family against him and left him nothing to live for.

Says his whole family turned on him because of me, and them being so mean to him destroyed his mental state to the degree that he couldn't recover.

She says if it weren't for me he would have had the strength to recover because COVID is not that bad and he really died from a broken heart more...

She posted on Facebook herself declaring me a t__itor who invaded his privacy and posted that video that was meant to be a joke and he never meant for the...

She says I formed an army to bully him. Many of her other family members commented telling her that HE posted the video on my wall. She doesn't believe it....

She is grieving and struggling but COME ON. She is being a l__atic and I just can't deal with her anymore. Ever.

A Second Cancer Battle Began With Hope and Determination

When he was just 14 years old, he endured surgeries, treatments, and the emotional toll of childhood cancer before eventually beating the disease.

For years afterward, life felt normal again.

Then, at age 30, everything changed.

Routine medical testing uncovered a completely different cancer affecting another organ. Doctors classified it as Stage 2, but they warned that the cancer was particularly aggressive and could advance rapidly if treatment was delayed.

Surgery came first.

Next came oral chemotherapy, allowing him to take medication from home instead of making exhausting daily hospital visits. He still needed regular blood work and scans, but the home treatment made an incredibly difficult situation a little more manageable.

Even so, chemotherapy took its toll.

He became weak, frequently nauseous, developed headaches, and lost a significant amount of weight. Household chores that once seemed effortless became impossible on some days.

His wife never complained.

Instead, she quietly picked up the extra work while reassuring him that surviving cancer mattered far more than vacuuming or washing dishes.

As she often reminded him, “Your only obligation right now is not to die.”

His Mother-in-Law Thought She Knew Better Than Doctors

His mother-in-law was fully aware of the diagnosis.

When she visited one afternoon, she found him resting on the couch while his wife cleaned around the house.

Rather than asking how he was feeling, she criticized him.

She mocked him for lying down during the day while his wife worked, questioning whether he felt ashamed watching her “work like a slave.”

He calmly explained that he’d recently taken chemotherapy and wasn’t feeling well.

Her response shocked him.

She dismissed his illness as “some silly cancer” and claimed he couldn’t possibly recover by filling his body with chemicals. According to her, natural remedies were the only real cure.

Later that day, while speaking privately with her daughter in the kitchen, she doubled down.

She insisted chemotherapy was poisoning him, argued that doctors were incompetent, and encouraged his wife to abandon medical treatment in favor of herbal remedies.

Fortunately, his wife immediately shut the conversation down.

She firmly told her mother to stop giving medical advice about subjects she clearly didn’t understand.

At the time, they believed that was the end of it.

It wasn’t.

He Opened the Medicine Cabinet and Found His Cancer Treatment Gone

The following morning, he followed his normal routine.

He walked into the bathroom, opened the cabinet where his chemotherapy was stored, and froze.

The medication was gone.

Both he and his wife searched the house, convinced someone must have moved the bottles.

Nothing.

Then his wife remembered something.

Just before leaving the previous day, her mother had asked to use the bathroom.

The realization hit instantly.

Without saying much, she grabbed her keys and drove straight to her mother’s house.

When she returned about thirty minutes later, her expression confirmed their worst fears.

Her mother had admitted everything.

She had taken every bottle of chemotherapy from their bathroom and thrown it into the trash because she genuinely believed she was saving his life.

According to her, the medication was killing him, not the cancer.

If he simply drank herbal tea instead, she’d insisted, he’d recover naturally.

Her daughter was furious.

She permanently banned her mother from their home.

Why Dangerous Medical Misinformation Can Have Serious Consequences

According to the American Cancer Society, many complementary therapies may help patients cope with treatment side effects, but they should never replace scientifically proven cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. Delaying or stopping prescribed treatment based on unproven remedies can allow cancers to grow and significantly reduce the chances of successful recovery.

This situation highlights the real-world danger of misinformation. The mother-in-law likely believed she was acting out of love, but good intentions cannot replace medical expertise. By secretly disposing of prescribed chemotherapy, she interfered with a carefully planned treatment schedule created by oncology specialists. Missing even one dose forced the patient back to his oncologist to develop an entirely new medication plan.

Trust between family members is important, but when it comes to life-threatening illnesses, decisions should be guided by qualified medical professionals rather than personal beliefs or internet myths.

Here's the input from the Reddit crowd:

Many argued that throwing away someone else’s prescribed chemotherapy wasn’t simply crossing a family boundary, but potentially criminal because it directly interfered with life-saving medical care.

moderately_neato − There's really nothing you can do at this point. This is a thing that happens sometimes in death.

When I was younger, I used to hear about the denial part of the grieving process and I was like "how can you deny death? "

But your brain will attempt all kinds of crazy mental gymnastics to spare itself from the pain.

My cousin killed himself 17 years ago. Obviously dealing with that is awful. His mother, my aunt, tried to blame his fiancee and drove her away, and then she blamed...

She blamed my mom for years and years. It was utterly irrational.

She said my mom took my grandma's money (she didn't) and if she hadn't, they would have had money to save him from his debts and such (which wasn't the...

It was really awful for the whole family. But grief makes you do terrible things.

Your MIL cannot live with the fact that her husband is dead and that COVID killed him. She wants to blame anyone but him for his death. You are a...

She's in denial and cannot be reasoned with, because to accept what everyone is saying is to accept that it was his fault, and she can't do that. It's easier...

Other people can defend you, but you don't need to waste energy on it, because she's not going to change her mind right now, and arguing with her is only...

Hopefully in time she will see that this is not true, but in the meantime just take care of yourself and don't worry about her.

Gone_with_the_tea − Yes, she is grieving. What do you think how often late FIL had these conversations with her,

how often they joked about snowflake-sandwich-slaves (ugh) and how much they laughed about COVID? It was all fun and games to both of them.

Then the unthinkable happened and she remembered all the times they encouraged each other's mindset and opinions, and that they formed an echo chamber of COVID denial.

But that would mean that she didn't prevent her husband's death, and that can't be. She isn't evil. She is an upstanding, decent member of society. So she needed as...

It's her guilt speaking. She will deny reality, because she can't handle the reality that people like her promote the spread and cause DEATH. This is too much for her...

Others praised the wife for immediately believing her husband, confronting her mother without hesitation, and permanently banning her from their home.

Muted-Designer − Has anyone informed the subway employee(s? ) that the man coughing in his direction was later diagnosed positive and subsequently died from Covid?

The timeline isn’t really clear here, but I worry that your FIL may have already been infected and could have transmitted it to anyone nearby while he was taking that...

I read an article today that said Covid continues to spread because as many as 25- 50% of infected people remain asymptomatic.

Aside from that, can you distance yourself from MIL? You’re dealing with enough stress working in the medical field during the pandemic, you don’t need to be her s__pegoat on...

CrazyBrieLady − There's a lot of things my snarky side wants to say to her, but. ..this is probably not the time, and there probably isn't really any point to...

She doesn't _want_ to understand what you're explaining to her because she doesn't _want_ to believe you. She's been married to this guy for decades, I trust she knows exactly...

If she now wants to change her tune and act like your FIL was a poor angel who 'dIeD oF a BrOkEn HeArT'

because there might have been social repercussions to him spreading a video of himself coughing all over some innocent subway employee (bonus for the 'subway slave' comment, what a peach),...

If she is truly that far gone, that tone deaf and willing to stick her head in the sand just so she doesn't have to acknowledge reality, there is nothing...

But you also don't have to sit there and take her b__lshit, especially if she's still not taking the danger of this situation seriously.

Edit: plus, considering the fact that she did indeed marry this shitstained pile of rusty nails demon overlord and is perfectly okay with his behaviour and mindset, I'm not sure...

Several commenters also encouraged the couple to document everything, noting that someone willing to sabotage cancer treatment once might attempt something similar again if given another opportunity.

musicalsigns − Grief can make even the best people lash out. I'm going to take a guess that she didn't have a great starting point of she was married to...

icky-chu − I'm not getting past the snowflake sandwich slave comment. If you work at subway you get paid pretty badly. You are either young or not well off, maybe...

And for all the pull yourself up by your boot straps talk of some folks, why would you look down on, and go out of your way to harrass someone...

I would report your MIL post to Facebook. She can mourn all she needs to, but she doesn't get to take a crap on you.

[Reddit User] − She's blaming you so she doesn't have to blame herself. She probably joked and laughed right along with him.

[Reddit User] − I’m not sorry that he died, either. Who I’m concerned for are all the people he put in danger. Your MIL will always find a way to...

This was the most convenient, totally insane, but convenient way to avert her anger and guilt on the one person who was actually right because she can’t be angry at...

sammythetoller − She’s just grieving and needs someone or something to blame instead of acknowledging that her husband was irresponsible and karma caught up with him.

Hopefully it will pass. In the meantime, if you feel like it, you could message her something to the effect of “mil, I am sorry that fil became a victim...

I know you are experiencing an incredible amount of grief and loss right now, and since you have been lashing out in your pain, I think it is best that...

My heart goes out to you, and I will be here when you are ready to engage in a healthier way. ” Then just let your husband handle any and...

Even if fil was an ass your husband did lose his father, so focus on him instead.

NM037 − Has someone alerted the Subway store about the fact that he did have COVID and was deliberately coughing on one of their employees?

Cancer demands enough strength without patients also having to defend themselves from misinformation disguised as concern.

This husband was fortunate to have a partner who trusted science, respected medical professionals, and fiercely protected him when it mattered most. Not everyone facing a serious illness has that kind of support.

One missed chemotherapy dose may not define his recovery, but the betrayal certainly changed how his family will look at his mother-in-law forever.

What do you think? Should someone who deliberately destroys another person’s life-saving medication ever be welcomed back into the family?
