Woman Refuses Another Group Vacation After One Couple Keeps Turning Everyone Else Into Free Childcare

Group vacations are supposed to bring friends closer together, but only when everyone is actually sharing the load.

This Redditor says she and her husband have spent years taking annual summer trips with two other couples, a tradition built on a friendship that goes back to their husbands’ childhoods.

Over time, however, she began noticing that every vacation revolved around one couple’s changing needs, from late-night pregnancy cravings to childcare and meal preparation.

Wanting this year’s trip to feel like a vacation for everyone instead of unpaid work, she suggested a different style of getaway. Instead of excitement, the proposal sparked tears, hurt feelings, and accusations that the group was leaving one family behind.

'AITA for refusing to vacation with our friends ?'

Context: our husbands are childhood friends , as our families grew we became a rather close knit group .

Every year we do a summer vacation together, we have two boys less than 10 ,

one of the couples (t&l) chose to be child free and the other (r&m) have one girl , expecting another soon ..

We are all in the same income group , different jobs different lifestyles .

We prefer to do experiences to spend time creating memories with our boys, t&l have no preferences except

that they not be put on childcare duties which has never been a problem until now ,

r&m will have checked off the google list for the top 50 things to do, they airbnb every other week

So the last few years our vacations have been spent almost always catering to the demands of r&m

first they were pregnant but they really wanted to camp one last time ,

I was just coming out of a mastectomy but said hell yes and stayed in a cabin in the woods while they camped in a tent . and we enjoyed...

until they refused to go back their camp site and slept on our bed instead making us sleep on the couch .

And because we had a cabin with a kitchen, she had pregnancy cravings which were met even at 2&3 am with the kitchen light on.

Needless to say neither my husband nor I slept an entire night for those 3 days .

Next summer they had an infant, they wanted to do a beach with her , we all said yes , left the choice of location to them,

they booked a lake beach Airbnb which specifically stated it wasn’t a good location for infants because of the terrain .

The rest of us had a ball , we kayaked and did the fire pit and the hammock .

They tried to hand over childcare to t&l and were clearly told No .

So we took turns looking after 3 kids while they did activities .

They were sleep deprived as all new parents are and the whole thing of cooking breakfast and cleaning up fell on the rest of us .

For me it wasn’t a vacation at all.

Coming to this year, We just had them all over for the weekend , we started discussing summer.

They are pregnant with a child under 2 - we bounced a few ideas , the kids suggested snorkeling and some one else suggested fishing ,

so I offered to book a private yacht for a day and have a hotel or Airbnb on the beach with a chef for the next day.

We loved it . R was putting the baby to sleep, M just refused to entertain the idea saying she would miss out on too much of the vacation ....

They wanted to do a hike / trek in the mountains & we were all confused - so I asked her who is carrying the now 1 year old on...

because she is pregnant and her husband had a prolapsed disc and she suggested my husband or me .

I said with all due respect no, and added that I wasn’t in the mood to do a vacation

if there isn’t someone else in the group who can cook or we hire a chef or do a different style vacation ..

T & L chimed in & agreed . My husband said lets get a private chef .

R joined in at this point and found his wife M in tears, we gave him the short version

and they feel we are not being fair by choosing a destination which would make them unable to participate in fully ..

We let them sleep it off, but they left this morning without breakfast .

And now I’m wondering what I did wrong for choosing this point of view that could potentially disturb this beautiful friendship . So I ask you ….

Update : thank you 🙏🏽 . I thought I was going crazy and felt guilty that we were giving up on a tradition- but this was a hard no from...

My husband stood by my decision .

The husbands decided to just vacation by themselves for this year & I think it's probably the best for now .

Because their behavior triggered something in me that I was unprepared for .. As for questions : we do take vacations just as a family .

We have enjoyed all inclusive resorts with our boys but it's never suited R & M because it's not their style.

On giving up the cabin bed : that is one point I keep coming back to as I re evaluate this friendship,

I am going for a book event this week with M - and I think it's time I bring it up - any suggestions/ thoughts are welcome .

Long-standing traditions can create the expectation that everyone should continue making the same sacrifices year after year. But friendships evolve as people’s families, health, finances, and responsibilities change.

A tradition remains enjoyable only when the effort and compromise are shared. When one group consistently adjusts while another rarely does, resentment often grows quietly until a single conversation brings years of frustration to the surface.

This situation appears to be much bigger than choosing between a beach and a mountain hike. Over several vacations, one couple repeatedly shaped the plans around their own circumstances.

During one trip, the group accommodated a late-stage pregnancy by changing the style of vacation, only to lose their own bed and sleep because the expecting couple chose to use the cabin instead of their tent. The following year, the rest of the group stepped in to help with childcare, meals, and cleanup so the parents could enjoy activities themselves.

None of these accommodations were necessarily unreasonable in isolation. The issue is that they accumulated without an equivalent effort to consider what everyone else wanted from the vacation.

There is another side worth acknowledging. Parenting very young children while expecting another baby is physically and emotionally demanding. Travel becomes more complicated, and many activities simply are not practical.

It is understandable that the couple wanted destinations where they could remain together as a family. However, the expectation that other adults would carry their toddler on a mountain hike illustrates the imbalance that had developed.

Rather than asking whether anyone would be willing to help, the responsibility appeared to be assigned before anyone agreed.

Likewise, dismissing suggestions such as hiring a private chef or choosing a more accessible destination suggested that compromise was expected primarily from everyone else.

Research on relationships consistently shows that fairness is based less on identical contributions than on the perception that everyone is making a genuine effort to consider one another’s needs.

Psychologist Dr. John Gottman has found that successful long-term relationships and friendships depend on mutual responsiveness rather than one-sided accommodation. Feeling heard and valued is often more important than getting one’s preferred outcome.

Boundary expert Nedra Glover Tawwab similarly explains that healthy relationships require people to communicate limits before resentment builds into conflict. Saying “I can’t continue doing this” is often an attempt to preserve a relationship rather than end it.

Viewed through that lens, the conversation was not really about rejecting one couple’s vacation ideas. It was about acknowledging that the group dynamic had shifted.

The suggestion of a private chef represented an effort to reduce the burden on everyone, while the refusal to automatically provide childcare reflected a boundary that had gone unspoken for too long.

The husbands’ decision to take a separate trip this year may ultimately protect the friendship instead of damaging it. Friendships survive differences in lifestyle when expectations remain realistic and compromises flow in both directions.

Sometimes the healthiest way to preserve a tradition is to pause it until everyone’s circumstances and everyone’s willingness to share the compromises are better aligned.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters felt the couple expected everyone else to serve their vacation needs

julesk − NTA, your friends r&m want a vacation where everyone caters to their needs

but I don’t hear they’re offering to do anything in return other than dictating the terms of the trip.

I wouldn’t vacation with them cause I like trips where everyone is pitching in and no one is demanding spa treatment from their fellow travelers.

Anxious-Routine-5526 − NTA. When doing a group vacation no one person or couple gets to dictate everything for everyone else.

If the majority wants to go to a particular place go.

You don't all have to be glued to each other the entire trip so it's fine to have some space when it comes to activities.

Your friend's need to stop imposing on everyone else's vacation wants/needs

expecting complete accommodation for their personal requirements for their family.

They want everyone else to help pay for the vacation they want and cater/babysit their kids to boot.

FrontTour1583 − Nta but why would you even want to vacation with this couple again? They sound awful

These Redditors believed the group had outgrown traveling together and should vacation separately

21stCenturyJanes − This beautiful friendship? LOL A friendship where they walk all over you because you don't know how to say no is not a beautiful friendship.

It sounds like you've all outgrown vacationing together, at least for a few years.

Matilda_Mac − NTA - It’s time to end this torture called “group vacation. ”

Decide what you want to do, make your plans and offer the opportunity for the others to join you on your terms, no adjustments.

Or just simply tell them your life styles have grown apart and you are going it alone. We always camped and friends often asked to join us.

They did what we had planned. Sometimes they stayed the entire time, sometimes they left after a few days.

But it was our vacation and they followed us or did not come.

Mundane_Pie_6481 − Vacation without them this year .

These users praised OP for offering compromises while refusing childcare and housework demands

Bitter-Respond6928 − It’s not wrong to state what you want when creating a vacation plan for others.

You asked questions. They gave answers. They said no to what you wanted (yacht/snorkeling).

You didn’t pout, not give them dinner, tell them to leave. You said, “well then, what do you want to do? ” They said, we want to go hiking.

You will be responsible for our toddler on activities. You will be responsible for cooking/cleaning up. ”

You said, “no, but we can compromise on this. ” They pouted and rage quit their visit.

Diligent-Draft6687 − your group is perfect for an all inclusive resort. especially ones that have on-site childcare.

you can be together, and go on excursions and nobody gets saddled with labor from group. you're old and apparently wealthy enough to do it. .

This group urged OP to travel only with the child-free couple and stop being pushed around

PiccoloImpossible946 − You need to vacation alone this year or only with the childless couple.

Stop letting them walk all over you! I can’t believe they stayed in your cabin three nights! Wtf?

IZC0MMAND0 − I'd just book the vacation with the child free couple and be done with it.

You are not the AH for standing up for yourself. The childfree couple aren't either for standing their ground.

You should make sure that the pregnant friend understands that you are not going to be a back up for her. Stick to your guns there.

Make sure your husband doesn't undermine you.

Remind him how her crackpot ideas ruined the last two vacations for you both. You more than him

Do you think declining the vacation was the right decision, or should the group have continued searching for another compromise? At what point does accommodating friends become sacrificing your own vacation? Share your thoughts below!
