Mother-In-Law Ignored Her Allergy Warning, Then Her “Thoughtful Gift” Sent Her Running to the ER

in Social Issues

She thought her husband’s family was making an effort.

Before their first Christmas together, her mother-in-law called to ask about her severe allergies.

Since she carried multiple EpiPens and had a life-threatening reaction to raw fish and shellfish, she was touched that someone wanted to make sure she would be safe.

But Christmas Day revealed something completely different.

While opening presents, her husband’s family brought out a special gift from the freezer.

Inside the unmarked box was a variety pack of frozen fish fillets.

The moment she saw it, everything changed.

Her husband immediately grabbed an EpiPen and rushed her out the door because they were nearly 70 miles away from emergency care.

What should have been a happy holiday turned into a terrifying race against time.

Later, they discovered the truth: her mother-in-law had been asked about her allergies so the family could prepare food safely.

nstead of sharing the information, she claimed there were no food allergies and suggested the dangerous gift herself.

Then, after the emergency was over, the family blamed them for “ruining Christmas.”

Newlywed’s first Christmas with her husband’s family turns dangerous when a “gift” ignores her severe allergy

'My JNMIL tried to k__l me for Christmas?'

My first Christmas with my husband we were invited to his

aunt’s house to celebrate with his family. I had never met any

of them since they live pretty far away and we eloped. 2

weeks before JNMIL calls my husband to ask him about my

allergies, since I have several severe allergies and require at

least 3 epi pens on me at all times.

I thought that was really sweet! My husband told her most of

my allergies are bug bites, animal dander and several

medications but a major food allergy I have is shellfish and raw

fish. When cooked I’ll have a reaction to fish that to normal

people would be severe but non lethal but when raw I’ll go

into anaphylactic shock almost instantly and stop breathing in

less than a minute.

There is no fish in my house, ever. I don’t eat at restaurants

that serve fish. It’s a major part of my life since I live in a very

seafood heavy area.

On Christmas Eve we were all opening presents and at some

point my JNMIL and husband’s aunt say my gift isn’t under the

tree because it’s in the freezer. I’m confused but that sounds

super intriguing. They bring out a box that’s blue cardboard

and unmarked. I open it and it’s a variety pack of frozen fish

filets.

I literally threw the box out of my lap and my husband RUNS

to the kitchen, grabs an epi pen and stabbed me in the thigh.

With my allergies you don’t wait for a reaction to respond, you

start immediately.

We’re about 70 miles out of the city so my husband is already

on the phone with 911 and we run to the car. THANKFULLY I

don’t end up reacting badly to it, probably due to the box

being frozen and the fish being individually wrapped but being

that far out of a populated area with only 3 pens can be lethal

for me.

When the reaction is severe enough I’ll burn through an epi

pen in about 10-15 minutes before starting up again, I need an

IV and an emergency room.

We got to the hospital and other than hives on my hands I’m

fine, I’m monitored for 6 hours to wait for a delayed reaction

and sent home.

When we got home my husband had about a dozen hysterical

voicemails from his mom saying we RUINED Christmas with

our way over the top reaction to a thoughtful gift, she had

“forgotten” and that we owed them all an apology.

We later found out it was the aunt that asked her sister to

inquire about my allergies so she could cook safely for me and

my JNMIL told her I didn’t have any food allergies and

suggested the gift.. We’ve been NC for 6 years.

Trust is often built through small acts of care, especially when someone makes the effort to understand another person’s needs.

For people living with serious allergies or medical conditions, that trust is not just emotional. It can become a matter of safety.

When someone ignores that responsibility, the damage goes far beyond a simple mistake.

In this situation, OP entered her husband’s family gathering believing she was being welcomed and considered.

Her mother-in-law appeared to take an interest in her allergies beforehand, which created the expectation that her safety would be respected.

Instead, OP received a gift that could have caused a life-threatening reaction.

The most painful part was not only the dangerous item itself, but the discovery that her mother-in-law had reportedly dismissed important medical information and later minimized the emergency.

For OP, the incident represented a complete breakdown of trust during what should have been a meaningful family milestone.

A different perspective is that this story is not simply about an allergy misunderstanding.

Many people who do not experience severe allergies may underestimate how quickly and seriously reactions can occur.

They may view avoiding certain foods as a preference rather than a necessary safety measure.

However, when someone has clearly communicated a medical risk, ignoring that information becomes a choice with real consequences.

OP’s husband’s immediate response also shows the difference between someone who understands the seriousness of the situation and someone who treats it as an inconvenience.

This insight helps explain why OP and her husband eventually chose distance.

The issue was not only the frozen fish.

Mistakes can happen, especially when people are unfamiliar with a condition.

The deeper problem was the reported response afterward: focusing on ruined holiday plans rather than the possibility that someone could have been seriously injured.

A sincere apology and acknowledgment of the danger might have created a path toward repair, but dismissing the reaction made the situation much harder to forgive.

Families often expect people to overlook hurtful behavior because of shared history.

However, family connections do not remove the need for respect, especially when health and safety are involved.

OP’s decision to maintain boundaries reflects a difficult but understandable reality: protecting personal safety sometimes means accepting the loss of a relationship.

The story also serves as a reminder that compassion is not only about intentions.

A person can believe they are doing something kind while still causing harm.

True care requires listening, respecting boundaries, and taking another person’s vulnerabilities seriously.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

Many commenters focused on how bizarre the “gift” itself was

livingthegoodlifenow − Come on. As if that’s not the strangest

present to get someone you’ve never met! Even if a family

member LOVED fish I still wouldn’t buy them raw frozen fish.

She couldn’t even hide the fact she was being a p__cho!

bexisnotcomedic − Why would you give someone a box of

frozen fish for Christmas anyway

tiffanyblueprincess − . ...tbh what kind of gift is a box of frozen

fish sticks

laika_cat − I have a serious food allergy. Thankfully, my MIL

also has one, albeit another serious food allergy to something

completely different. I think there’s a mutual understanding

between us of “Please don’t make me have to go to the ER. ..”

Why do people think allergies are something you can “test” or ignore?

It’s not like I’m claiming to be allergic to 500 things — and

trust me, I would love to try lobster or eat shrimp again much

more than paying for epipens every six months.

hlaiie − Even if I wasn’t allergic to fish and someone gave me a

pack of frozen fish as a Christmas present I’d never talk to them again.

They viewed the act as potentially criminal

SushiNommer − How did nobody call the police? This is

attempted m__der. Theres way she can argue her way out of

it. She was informed of your allergy, she attempted to give it

to you as a "gift". Not even a usual gift that you can explain.

She basically handed you a box of poison and nothing

happened to her? Nothing? ? Seriously?

Piperdiva − That's attempted m__der, IMO. I would have

considered filing charges against her.

This user questioned the motivation behind the behavior

canada929 − ‘Yeah so my mom met my wife ONCE, tried to

k__l her because. ..... (we’re still not sure) and then we never

spoke to her again. ’ That about sums that up. Quick question,

any idea where this came from? Was she always like this?

Did she get upset because you dared to marry him without

meeting her first or was she jealous you took her son away?

Redditor agreed that the gift appeared intentionally harmful and described the person as dangerous

mummaof3 − Who thinks a frozen crate of fish is a good gift

for anyone? She deliberately tried to k__l you. BSC with a

Capital B! So glad you’ve gone no contact.

The OP’s first Christmas with her husband’s family turned into a terrifying reminder of why serious allergies should never be dismissed.

What appeared to be a thoughtful gift nearly became a medical emergency, especially given how quickly her shellfish and raw fish allergy could become life-threatening.

The biggest issue wasn’t just the mistake, but the fact that important information was ignored and then blamed on her reaction.

Do you think cutting contact was the right choice after such a dangerous situation, or was there room for forgiveness? Share your thoughts below!
